Lots of change in boats and motors since I watched the Gold Cup races many years ago in Lake Washington however the danger is still there.

I had my boat at the Michigan City Marina for 10 years before moving to FL. Where is on a lift in the back.
I remember living in point Pleasant and seeing the Hennessy and Benihana Grand prix.
It Must have been fun fighting the chop of Lake Michigan. One day it can be like glass, then the next day you can have 6 to 10' waves. Not too many cats on Michigan it's deep-haul land for a good reason.

dang at 2:03 were still wedging a block of wood and a socket between the $15,000 blade and lower unit to tighten up the shaft nut. I woulda thought it would have been more technical on a $2,000,000 boat

Jet drives are nowhere near as efficient as a prop, so no. Two boats of the same size, weight and HP, the prop boat will be faster. I had a jet boat and loved it, then I got a surface drive prop boat and forgot about the jet, lol.

How do these boats compare to a ww2 Elco 80foot class Pt boat or patrol torpedo boat with there two 1500hp Packard engines
About 150 plus faster these are running 1300 to 2000 hp v8s all though I love the sound of a RR or Packard use to be at the races on the Detroit river in the old days before the jets
I'ma need a W 16 for this one with aircraft WW2 style spool the Napier blower n cut down the pistons engine let 30000 to 55000 rpms ride with it 😁 hang on tight

Why do the race boats have to start off with their engines in gear?
They don’t have a typical transmission that can shift into gear while the engine is running. They use what’s called a “crash box” type trans that is way more reliable but can only shift into gear with engine off.
I've never been able to understand why these boats are so big, don't get me wrong they are awesome, but cmon man, power to weight. They don't even sound turbo'd or supercharged.
What else can be better sounds than theese big V 8 engines....
