One thing I have to say about SNK. I used to live in Japan for about 6 years teaching English, specifically Osaka. Every student knew about Konami, Capcom, etc... The second I mentioned SNK, all I got was a blank 'eh?' look. It's a pity such an iconic Japanese company had zero recognition within its home country, not to mention its home CITY.

5:55 and 6:35 The point in Alpha Mission letters (mostly) is to collect same letters because they are different upgrade "paths" to ship attacks (for example L stands for lasers and M is for Misles) and if you collect different letter, your ship attacks reset to different path, but with least amount of power. In Alpha Mission 2 there is also collectible "words" - these are work in same way - collect 3 same words and you will be given stored power up, that when you use it, you will temporaly transform your ship in more powerful form (that can also withstand several hits before revertind to regular ship). You can keep several of these power ups in storage if you complete collecting same words, but collecting different word before finishing collecting current set is reverts progress to different path. Hope i explained these understandble enouth
ive got the psp eboot port, and while ive played it a bit, its not enough to really get its mechanics.. does picking up the letters act like the number weapons pick ups in Aleste (Power Strike) in that you get a couple seconds of invincibility ? if not that seems like a huge amount of work paying attention to things other than the enemies and their fire for a shooter..
@@arcadianlhadattshirotsughW33Z No, in Alpha Mission you're basically collecting parts for a weapon. When you have all parts you can activate it, thus equipping your ship with a temporary but powerful weapon. These are pretty much required to defeat the bosses if you don't want to spend a long time fighting them, some can quickly make short work of the bosses.
basically you collect 3 S to upgrade your speed by 1, and the same for Missles (M) and lazers (L). Each of these three can upgrade 2 times. once you got the 2nd upgrade, you collect the relevant K letters to lock in the upgrades. The E is for the energy meter used by the fully collected ship attachments when you equip them (which you need 3 pieces to make a completed attachment, you can only assemble one at a time, but fully assembled attachments are banked so you can use them whenever you need, though they are one time use only, and use up Energy). the other letters do different things, the F opens boxes/explodes them, the R is for a reverse/go back in the stage, W is for Warping/going ahead in the stage (which sucks), P is for an extra ship/life, and avoid C, as it Cancels/removes any ship attachment you are using, so avoid that at all costs. etc. be careful though as when you see reversed letters, you should avoid them, as reversed letters impact you negatively, i.e reverse S slows you down, then you have to collect 3 more normal S to upgrade, reversed E robs you of Energy, etc. I loved Alpha Mission, and play it regularly, but only really get to the 4th area as it is tough. oh and building the shield attachment and using it is a must!
I first heard the tune in King of Fighters as well! I was blown away a few years later when I found that old-ass game singing to me with that same tune.
Actually it didn't. The technology was always the same, just like today, but the emulators make the older games look worse to trick us into thinking the games have gotten better over time. But companies make old games like this look simple and bad because back then a game cost $40-$50 and they want us to pay $70 now, so they make the old games look simple and 2d.
I loved Athena in King of Fighters 96, I could use her spinning attack to roll over entire teams, the other 2 characters just sat there thinking "why did we even bother to come?!?"
One that wasn't mentioned in the video but I like is S.A.R. - SEARCH AND RESCUE (1989), it's like a spiritual successor to Victory Road, a topdown shooter with rotary control, with a science fiction theme and lots of blood and gore. And after Sky Soldiers there was Sky Adventure too, made by the same people a year later.
I know most people don't consider it a very good shmup, but I have fond memories of Sky Soldiers. The time travel gimmick was just so cool. I still boot it up in MAME every once in a while and play it.
That was incredible for a first stop-motion project, especially as a solo experiment! Moving the camera along with the subject to simulate tracking is painstaking and ambitious, and it worked great!
I recently watched Sakharu's video of the history of Neo Geo and its first chapter went into what built up to it. So I really liked seeing this early era of SNK being expanded more.
TNK III is the first SNK game I played at my local roller rink back in the day. It had an incredible selection of cabs. Robocop, Operation Wolf, and Pole Position II got much love from me then.

Great idea for a show. I've been a fan of SNK since playing Vanguard at a diner in the early 80s. We thought it was so cool to hear bits of Queen's Flash Gordon, and the Star Trek music, when you hit the invincibility shield. The gameplay was also fun back then. I would double down on my love for SNK in 1990 when picking up a Neo•Geo Gold System + Baseball Stars and Tiop Player's Golf. After reading about their upcoming system in both EGM and VG&CE mags, I started saving up my money. What a time to be a gamer! Playing arcade games on a home TV was really amazing. Plus they were even more impressive than most other arcade games for their time as well. -Matt
Street Fighter 6 is the game I've had the most fun with for the past year as well. I normally have zero interest in competitive gaming, but I got so deep into this game that I now have three characters in master rank. Not bad for a 40 year-old.
This video helped me solve a 40 plus year mystery for me regarding an arcade game they had in my local swimming baths in the late 70s or early 80s. My main recollection was that there was a comet which fired a lot of bullets at you once shot. I have trawled through a ton of MAME ROMs trying to find it but couldn't. As soon as your video started and Ozma Wars came on I knew straight away it was the game. I do have the ROM and started it up to make sure and it is black and white. Then I remembered the arcade one had coloured striped on the glass.. Thanks for this, really grateful.
Crystalis is my favorite 3rd party game for the NES, and I actually like it a lot more than either of the NES Zelda games.

Since you mentioned Athena being the same character that later appeared in all KoF games, it's worth pointing out that the main characters from Ikari Warriors are Ralf and Clark from KoF's Ikari team, and who would later also appear in Metal Slug 6 onwards. Anyways, great episode!
John you mentioned wanting to play as a gorilla/guerilla during the Guerilla War segment, obviously as a joke but I would recommend the indie game Ape Out, where you actually play as an escaped gorilla! I'm a big fan of the game myself.
Used to love Ken Griffey Jr Presents Major League Baseball for the snes and didnt find out until years later it was basically just a baseball stars 2 knockoff. Love both of those games still.
SNK has always been one of those companies that I've always enjoyed, especially how weirdly deep the lore goes. Like how it was mentioned Athena is in KoF (with it being the one from Psycho Solider, who is a reincarnation of the one from Althena) but also the main characters of Ikari Warriors are as well. As far as I'm aware of this mismash of weirdness is canon to each other and I adore it.
Yeah i have old mags from the era, egm, gamepro, and gamefan all claim its beimg worked on for the neo geo cd (or neo star system) along with magician lord 2. Too bad those never came to pass along with the additional chapter that was planned for samurai spirits rpg. Id love a metal slug rpg too.
It took me so many years to realize that Ikari Warriors is a prequel to Metal Slug. Especially “Gorilla War”: You rescue hostages, you can get into tanks, you can throw grenades. Mind blown 😮
Hello Joe, Steven Spielberg here. Let's cut right to the chase. Your short movie 'A Ride in the Truck' is the best piece of cinema in existence. Considering no one will ever top this piece of art, I'd like for you to have all my Oscars and any future ones I might win. Congraturations Joe. You've earned it!
I loved Crystalis, I would rent it all the time back in the day, finally got a cart of my own a while back. Cannot believe they made the music so much worse on the Gameboy Advance...
Streets smart having the same theme that was later ported to Michael Max’s theme and fatal fury is always a cool little Easter egg. I remember loving POW as a very small five-year-old. I miss old SNK.😊
Guerrilla War was one of my favorite games released by SNK in the NES era. Hands down that was one of the best over head run and gun games, especially for 2 player action.
I have fond memories of Ikari Warriors and Iron Tank, but Baseball Stars was my early SNK jam. The team building stuff made it insanely replayable, solo and multiplayer.
This one must have taken a while to put together and it was very enjoyable to watch. I learned about some new (to me) SNK games that I'll have to check out. Thanks for all of the great content you've put out over the years.
I love SNK. I feel like they never got the credit or attention they deserved. I think it's so cool that you are a fellow Coloradan. I hope I can run into you at some point so I can get your autograph.
Man I forgot how many great games SNK had both for the arcade and home systems(outside of neogeo). Tank and Ikari warriors were great and at the time I even liked the nes versions. Athena for nes I liked, and of course Crystalis is probably my favorite action rpg on the nes(zelda 1 does not have exp points!).
Fantasy was definitely an ambitious early SNK gane. I'm surprised Joe didn't mention the amount of speech in the game.. Guy: "How are you?" - Cheri "I'm fine, thank you!" - Cheri being kidnapped: "Ahhhhhh!" - Guy: "Let's go!!" and, a bit later, Cheri: "Help Me!!, and the gorillas getting hit with coconuts "woahahahah", horned enemies when they die: "Um bada bada bada Um bada". and the last board .. Man "I love you", Cheri: "I love you too". As far as that went, it was a pretty extensive amount for 1981. This makes sense, as it's SNK we're talking about here. If you've played Baseball Stars Pro, Top Player's Golf, NAM-1975, Cyber-Lip, back in the day, then you'll realize that they like their recorded speech in video games.:)
Really appreciate the collection that SNK put out. To include Arcade and NES versions made it one of the better retro collections out there. But be warned the NES versions are brutal. Even for someone who beat almost every NES game over a weekend that I rented. SNK did put out a few memorable titles. Fantasy and Munch Mobile appeared on the Texas Instruments Home Computer 994a which was my very first system.
I am thoroughly going to recommend the SNK 40th anniversary bundle to EVERY retro loving gamer. All of the games included that used the rotary joystick have been officially adapted to be twin stick shooters, so Joe, your wish for Ikari Warriors as a twin stick is indeed granted!
Alpha Mission is a great game. The letters represents power ups. S = speed M = missile L = Laser Etc And most importantly: E = energy. With that, you can choose a great variety of ships! It’s awesome.
Alpha Denshi also contributed to the development of the Neo Geo hardware, the 68000 based Alpha Denshi games used an earlier more primitive version of the "strip" graphics hardware that the Neo Geo would eventually use. Basically everything on screen is made up of strips that are 16 pixels wide and up to 512 pixels tall (on the Neo Geo) There are no tiles or pallets just strips and a block of color registers that the pixel values reference like how color on a VGA card works (in the case of the Neo Geo 4096 16-bit color registers and 12 bits per pixel)

A video of on all of SNK's pre-Neo-Geo games? Let's get it on!
Ikari Warriors Victory Road was an arcade that I never saw once but 1 and 3 were everywhere.
“Ikari Warriors also appeared on the ATARI 2600, and it’s the BEST version! Why play that wimpy NES game when you can play THIS?!”
I liked the Q and A at the end
Oh my gosh those first few arcade games give me strong sg-1000 vibes lol, i did not expect snk to be that old
13:56 I'm more pissed off than when I found out there are no corpses in Blast Corps!
PRE NEO GEO SNK WAS PRETTY NEAT
You need to win an oscar for that stop motion video.
Two acromyms I loved today: SNK and Q&A
I wonder how high Athena's song would have charted if it was released as a single
Probably only #3 or #2. Pathetic.
The Japanese version was released as a promotional cassette tape. (Khinsider has the download.)
It was released as a single, though
Jeremy Parish uploaded the tape to his channel too I think
JOOOOE! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your stop-motion video! It’s the extra effort that I truly appreciate. You are awesome!
Great channel!
Jeremy Parish claims there were plans for Crystalis II for Neo Geo but that they were canceled.
Snk rules
A new Gamesack is always welcome. Hope both you and Dave have had a great summer.
It took me so many years to realize that Ikari Warriors is a prequel to Metal Slug. Especially “Gorilla War”: You rescue hostages, you can get into tanks, you can throw grenades. Mind blown 😮
LMAO. I was not prepared for "total goatse". LMAO
The NES soundtrack absolutely bops! One of the best on that system.
Streets smart having the same theme that was later ported to Michael Max’s theme and fatal fury is always a cool little Easter egg. I remember loving POW as a very small five-year-old. I miss old SNK.😊
That Q&A was peak culture.
SNK made good games, still making good games.
Actually there is one game you didn't mention on the SNK roster before NeoGeo. It is Sky Adventure.

11pm = Game Sack time
3 am in my country 😂
2pm here
2 am for me
I love the fact you still have that 1992 stop motion animation!
Your video's are enjoyed and greatly appreciated here in the Netherlands! Thank you and keep up the great work!
Kinda sad you forgot to mention that Psycho Soldier was the absolute _first_ game to feature a song with full lyrics in-game, Joe.
S = speed
M = missile
L = Laser
Etc
And most importantly: E = energy.
With that, you can choose a great variety of ships!
It’s awesome.
Love seeing you do super old games from the pre NES era. More of this would be great!
Every second Sunday is the best Sunday, thankyou Joe!
The singing part in Psycho Soldier is hilarious! Makes me wanna play it right now!
Dark Arms for Neo Geo Pocket Color is in the vol.1 collection, which is real cheap usually for Switch and Playstation. In case anyone was wondering.
Sunday morning isn't Sunday morning without Game Sack.
I was thinking that myself!!!!
Still playing this games on the 40th aninersary release for Switch
Excellent work as always, Joe. Much appreciated.
