@@Alain.Bilodeau The "direct" bits are from the speaker emulated out. The part that's running through the VHT power amp are using the master out.

They were in the Leppard racks until we switched to the AxeFx 3 in early 2018. Phil’s signal chain was JMP into AxeFx 2 direct to FOH. Phil’s were stock, Viv’s were modded by Trace at Voodoo. Great units!

So random that I found this 2 year old comment…I saw Leppard in ATL earlier this week, and they sounded killer! I was curious about their gear since the guitar tones were incredible. I found an old rig down with JMP-1/AxeII combo, then remembered Mike did this video, and here we are!
I hope you are still touring with them-great show!
Edit: I would love to know more about their AxeIII presets, if you are able to share. Cheers!

I have had a JMP-1 on and off since they first came out. I think a lot of guys had them modded because they didn't know some of the secrets or how to use them correctly. Here are a few that I have realized over the years, BTW I always got complements on my tone when using one. Still have one and is still my go to for anything live.
    1) Set the Output volume knob to only around 2-4, 8 Am to 10 AM.
    2) Use the internal digitally controlled CH volumes to adjust the overall volume of the preamp and the Output for just minor volume tweaks.
    3) Higher Ch volumes and lower gain settings work better.
    4) OD2 and the bass shift are pretty much useless stick to OD1 for gain tones.
    5) Although not a true fully tube preamp, the two tubes in the preamp do make a difference in tone. One tube does the clean CHs and the other the OD CHs. Experiment with different tubes for the best tone. I like a Mullard for the cleans and a JJ for the gain.
    6) The power amp you use with the JMP-1 makes a BIG difference- I highly recommend a Marshall with EL34s. For more vintage tone use a 1987X, for more modern tones use a DSL.
    7) Don't think this is a high gain preamp, clean to moderate gain levels is what this thing does the best.
    7) One of the biggest secrets: Follow the JMP-1 with a BBE Sonic Maximizer with it's knobs set at about 1 O'clock. The BBE will pull down some of the honky mids and make this preamp a monster.

      Hey 2550marshall
I use mine with an BBE Sonic Maximizer as well, my power amp is an Marshall Valvestate 120/120 Pro. Sounds very pleasant and 80ies to me. :-D
Thanks for your advices, gonna try them out. :-)
By the way - OD1 and a Tube Screamer sometimes can be fun too.

some good stuff except for the JJ tube, they suck in most amps, this one is no different, mullards are smoother no doubt but NOS Chinese tubes are what makes these pre amps sing and the Rocktron exciter/imager is a must.

      @ChrisBlackTV 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have a JMP-1 as well. I actually like the OD2 channel quite a lot. You can get some awesome sounds out of it, but only if you set it up right.
It has way more gain than it should, so do not set it to more than 15. Otherwise it will sound like a wooly mammoth charging at you.
Scoop out the mids (the sweet spot seems to be somewhere around 0 to 2), crank up the presence, and don't go overboard with treble. Also, I do not recommend using bass shift with OD2, it just doesn't sound right.

That, the marshall 2x50 Watt power amp, a PCM70, and a 2x12 cab was my rig for all three years I spent touring with Kitaro (‘94-97). The whole “An Enchanted Evening” album and video were done with it. We got a Grammy nomination so I figure I got my money’s worth. Thanks for demo-ing it!

    • @AngusClarkGTR
      @AngusClarkGTR 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Leon Todd I’d have to hear it again to tell you. It was never amazing. That’s the rig that couldn’t compete next to my singer’s hot rod deville and how I wound up being “a plexi guy”. It was part of a journey. It worked great on that gig. The cab was inside a tympani drum case, running stereo, with Sennheiser 421’s. We were on in ears - in ‘94!.

That "honk" in the mids is the signature, and it is wonderful! That preamp was a goosed up digital version of the JMP head. That's why if you go: [ OD1 / Gain-15 / Bass-6 / Mid-2 / Hi-0 / Pres-2 ], you get "Back In Black-era" Angus Young. That mid-range honk is part of the original JMP SLP sound. The clean channel as well. While OD2 gets into more Lee Jackson/Jose Arrendondo-modded 2203 territory in regards to gain and low end. I've had a few of these in the studio over the years. They always sound spectacular. They are super hard to find though. If you ask certain folks at Marshall, they'll tell you Big Billy Gibbons bought them all from the warehouse when Marshall took them off the retail market. That could be urban legend though.

A lot of rookies are just finding out about rack preamps. While they do have their place - things can start to get very expensive. I am convinced that feedback (the magic electrical interference that defines rock and roll) can be compromised when the preamp and power amp live in separate spaces. Of course, it still happens, but a Marshall head has one specific place where everything comes together and I can appreciate that. I am one the fence with preamps and I have a bunch of them. For touring? Always a good thing. For direct recording they pretty much rule too. But I feel like people are trying to increase the value of their preamps with this new preamp TH-cam revolution.

I used to tour with a JMP 1 and a Triaxis. I got pretty experimental with them, but eventually just used them one at time and would switch depending on my mood at the gig. The trick with the JMP is that it REALLY needs something like a tube screamer in front of it if you're going to use OD2 channels. Also, I found that the voicings of the 2:90 power amp really complimented the JMP nicely as well.

In the mid 90"s i had this whole setup found at twin town guitars in Mpls. JMP1-JFX1-9200 power amp. Same as Dave Murray from maiden. Best gear i ever had snd got rid of it because i thought JCM800 head looked cooler. Went all downhill from there. Not enough gain so kept going through all the different amps out there. Lesson learned!! Keep your stuff!!

I remember reading somewhere that the JMP-1 was basically analog solid state distortion, and that the tubes were included simply for marketing purposes. Don't know how accurate that is, but this JMP-1 sounds really good. Wish Marshall would re-issue this or even an updated version. Good tones.

I bought a JMP-1 new and used it for around 2 decades with a Marshall Dual Mono block 9200 power amp in the rack. The 9200 has 5881 power tubes. I always hoped for newer versions of the JMP-1 (Maybe a JMP-2?) because I wanted a little more gain out of it, but at loud gigs when the 9200 was bringing things up to a respectable volume the whole rig just fattened up nicely.

That is what I thought as well but I never got these signature NIN guitar tones from my JMP1 in direct mode. I mean it gets you sorta there but in the way that any distortion/fuzz recorded directly will get you there. He recorded a lot direct via the JMP and also his Zoom 9030 but those very nasty signature guitar sounds (Mr Selfdestruct, Heresy, I don't want this, Eraser, No you don't) are all guitar recordings f*cked up with Metasynth. I think the JMP1 is probably most used "raw" on the Broken EP. And for more conventional distorted guitar rhythms/leads on Downward Spiral.

Great work as usual. I had a bunch of MP-1’s over the years. I always thought the Marshall was cool, but all the guys I knew that had one were such Dbags about how they played Marshall that I never got one. I think I will hunt one down. Thanks again for reminding me how awesome the 80’s were, you Da man!

I miss using my ADA Mp1 preamps. I still have them, they really need to be overhauled. I ran mine like a rackmounted overdrive through a Boss NS-2 then sent the output into a Real Tube II preamp for using stereo fx loop then into a Mos Valve for a long time.

I used this preamp 20 years direct / live something that help its tone stand out was a roland rsp550 in affect loop..IT ready rounded out the honk and added bottom. Added gain to all 4 modes. I used a early Hughs and kettner redbox and a palmer box direct.
Great results. Plug in and play. Mini rack
In context to the live mix
It was a big wall of plexi and jubellie marshall sound any vol
    I blew the transformer

I still have mine, I bought it in the 90's. Then had the Dr Boost mod from France done. all IC's were changed to burr Brown, all capacitors changed to 1% polystyrene, and the diodes on the power rails perfectly balanced. The differences were day and night from stock to modded.

Fun demo! I've been interested in these for a long time because of Billy Corgan's rig from the Mellon Collie era. I believe he ran through Mesa Strategy 500's with the deep switch on, which accounts for all the low end in that tone.

Back in the day I had a 9001 pre amp. Earlier than this one from what I remember. I don't think they were late getting into rack amps. Just late to really dive into it.
I had a matching power amp too. 9002 maybe??? Been a while. That power amp sounded like a tank Rollin thru the room. Mine had either 6550s or 6l6s, can't remember which but it sounded massive. Pre amp sounded good

    Hi Michael
I fished out a JMP1 which I had in a cupboard unused for probably 15 yrs or more, as I bought a UA OX Stomp and was looking for suitable front end preamps to partner with it. I have enjoyed what I've heard so far, but it's still not my nirvana........
But, that's not my main reason for posting............ during your demo, I saw a 9000 series Marshall Preamp in your rack....... I used to have one of these, and remember the clean sound as being stellar quality, but sadly, when the JMP1 arrived, I think everyone (me included) thought it was to replace the 9000 unit........at least that's what the rep told me. So I ordered one and before the JMP1 arrived, I sold it. Bad mistake! I was so disappointed with the clean sound of the JMP1 by comparison. It was a completely different beast altogether.......I live and learn. What do you think? I'd be interested to hear this alongside the JMP1.

The problem with the data knobs is people treated them like analog volume pots. Other than just wearing out, some would spray them with contact cleaner.. a BIG no no with those. I have a digitech 2120 that was ruined with that. The data knobs jump around like they're an 8 yr old in the bounce house hyped up on a full chocolate cake.

Love mine! I recently did built me some sort of 90s Rack just for fun. Jmp-1 combined with Digitech 2120 run by an Engl 840/50. You can get really close to some Mellon Collie & the Infinte Sadness tones imo. Just dont overuse the EQ..i use OD1 for example with Bass 5-6 mids 0 and treble 0 no bass shift. I really like Clean 2 with bass shift or Clean 1 without. Both Clean modes gain around 15-17...so pretty high and still clean. Works best for me.

I use a Triaxis and an ADA MP1 3TM for high gain sounds. I use my JMP-1 for pure "Marshall" tones, OD1 makes a very good impression of a JMP45 or Plexi, which I always use with a DOD250 OD in front and I get the best "Yngwie" tone ever. That is the only way for me to get a very accurate early-era Yngwie tone, which basically is super clean and sounds overdriven rather than distorted, but has enough pick attack and sustain. The mid "honk" is actually quite useful to get this sound.

    Hi Michael,
    Nice Demo!
Just wondering, when did you direct out JMP-1 to computer, did you use any power amp or speaker cabinet simulation?
Did you just connect JMP-1 to your interface?
    Thanks!

    • @seamanjive
      @seamanjive 4 ปีที่แล้ว

For what its worth I use the non-emulated master out into my interface (Scarlett 18i6) then into Cubase. In the DAW I route out to Torpedo Wall of Sound running speaker of choice, usually some kind of Marshall type 4x12. I turn on the power amp in WoS. A popular power amp for the JMP-1 was the Marshall 9600.

    • @seamanjive

I've been using that amp ever since it came out and got no inclination of changing it. I use a H&K 2x50 power stage and a TC electronics G-system. Changing sounds on the G-system also changes sounds on the JMP (via Midi obviously). This means that with one footswitch I can change effects and channel at the same time - and that for 128 channels. The H&K had to change tubes a few times, the Marshall still has the original ones.
