      With all due respect-
      - the dialed in MN's sound doesn't sound quite ' there' to me. I am a bit confused I seem to be the only person at this point to say this. It may be in the ballpark, but still not the same spot. Maybe a bit more tweaking? If anything, MN's lead sound appears more mellow, lacks those tense crisp highs and that harshness in the attack. The rhythm chops, however (the riff before the HW...TPD final solo) sound more flabby and loose.
      I'm only saying this because I've been looking exactly for Marty's lead Kemper profiles and asked for them on the Kemper forum, and someone actually replied I should ask BigHairyProfiles (no kidding!).

    • @BigHairyGuitars

      @@haveagoodone5830 Hi! Thanks for chiming in. The rhythm sounds are completely off, for sure. They would have been recorded with the Bogner Giant preamp, which is VERY different sounding. I just threw that in there for the fun of it. But the RealTube was NOT setup for tight rhythm playing for sure! As far as the lead tones, I think Marty probably used more gain than me. I have a habit of using less and less gain (a personal preference), and it came back to bite me in the butt a bit. The other aspect is putting it in the mix. I didn't do mix/mastering stuff to it which would definitely crispness and highs, but on acapella guitar, it can be a bit unpleasant. It's always a balancing act on youtube. The thing to listen for is in the midrange. more or less highs is easy. The midrange is something that can't really be altered. That's where I think they match up. If you have a Kemper, I think you'd find something you like. I profiled it a bunch of different ways, some more aggressive than this, some less. So you can find the one that matches your pick attach and blends with your guitar tone.

      Same here. Let me tell you how Rust in Peace (the album) became my favorite metal album of all times. I discovered Megadeth in 2001/2002 when I was 16. I am from Brazil and, as always, metal was not exactly popular down here. So, if we wanted to buy a CD from a metal band that was not Iron Maiden or Metallica (bands that were "popular enough" for the labels to decide to print their CDs in Brazil), for example, we had no choice but to buy imported CDs, which would cost me all the money I had for a month. Thus, my friends and I used to first download the songs from a given band through softwares like Napster, Kazaa, Emule and only after we were 100% sure that a certain band was worthy, we would then spend our limited cash to buy that band's CD. Well, back in 2001/2002, when you searched songs in one of those softwares like Kazaa, you would get MP3 files named such as "Metallica - One", or "Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills", following the pattern "Band name - song name". Therefore, when I was "discovering" ("downloading" cough, cough) Megadeth I had a folder filled with individual songs in MP3 format like "Megadeth - Hangar 18", "Megadeth - Holy Wars", "Megadeth - She Wolf", with no information whatsover about the album each song come from. The thing is that, from all the Megadeth songs I had downloaded, after one year I had my personal Top 5: "Megadeth - Holy Wars", "Megadeth - Hangar 18", "Megadeth - Take no Prisioners", "Megadeth - Lucretia", and "Megadeth - Tornado of Souls". I thought these songs were awesome, and somehow had a magical element that other Megadeth songs didn't have. I did not know all these songs were from the same album. To be honest, I only found out that these five songs were from the same album 2 or 3 years after I had establish my top 5 best Megadeth songs. What was my surprise at the end of 2004 when I found out that not only all my favorite Megadeth songs were from the same album, but also there was one extra "major" song I never heard before, which beared the same name of the album: "Rust in Peace". After I found out myfavorite Megadeth songs were from to the same album, Rust in Peace was already one of my favorite albums ever. I recall my expectations were very, very high when I finally got to listen to "Megadeth - Rust in Peace" for the first time. After five minutes listening to that song, I was completely baffled that Megadeth had surprised me again: not only Rust in Peace was a great song, it was a thrash metal master piece, I had no choice but to change my top 5 Megadeth songs to a top 6. So, not only all my favorite Megadeth songs were from the same album, but this album was so damn good that it made me discover another thrash metal jewel "Rust in Peace... polaris". After discovering this last song, "Rust in Peace" became my favorite metal album of all time, and still is. Like a good wine, Rust in Peace is aging very well. If you google now "best metal album of all times", Rust in Peace will appear among the very best, where it belongs.

      Marty is from another planet. I'm pretty sure...I ran into Megadeth in Rochester back in the mid 90s. All four of em were in a minivan, just the four of em, on 104 out in Greece NY, about 5 mins and 2 turns away from downtown Roc. Dave was driving, Junior riding shottie, and Marty & Nicky were in the back. The funniest part is that I TOTALLY forgot that we were going to see a Megadeth show that night. I literally looked over and saw 'Deth and I said "holy shit, it's fucking Megadeth". I was hanging out the window and got them to throw some horms and yelled at them that I will see them tonight.
      The best part about Marty is that he is clueless when it comes to gear and all that. He can play like no other, but he can barely even turn his rig on by himself. Ahh Martin, you are in a world that was not ready for you. 😂

  • @williamdistasio9358
    @williamdistasio9358 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Dude, that was THE BEST EVER Megadeth line up.
    And personally I think Rust is their best work. Sure, Countdowns production is much tighter, cleaner sounding, not as raw etc..
    But I found at that time that that was Dave's answer back to Metallicas Black album.
    I think Dave was like, fuck it, let's see what happens if we try to get a mainstream single or two too!
    While in my opinion, Countdown musically tears the Black albums asshole open, I don't think mainstream rock listeners, could handle daves voice or the complicated musical arrangements.
    Remember kid's, simple music for simple minds.
    And let's face it, as far as rhythms go, James is a beast. However, as a guitarist, I could pretty much grab a guitar and figure out most Metallica tunes right away without much fuss.
    Megadeth was always much harder to learn and figure out... always.
    James always gets accolades for being a great rhythm guitarist, and he is, but Dave is miles better.
    But anyway, I'm kind of getting away from what I wanted to say originally and that is this;
    Rust in peace is probably their best work.
    In my opinion, here is the order in which I would choose the first five Megadeth albums ...
    1. RUST (With peace sells a close close almost first for me)
    2. PEACE SELLS (SO hard if I had to choose only one of these top two!)
    3. KILLING IS MY BUSINESS, and oh boy oh boy is it good!
    4. COUNTDOW TO EXTINCTION
    5. SO FAR SO GOOD SO FUCKING WHAAAAAT!!
    And Nick was the BEST thrash metal drummer EVER!!
    He was able to follow the music SO fucking perfectly beautifully!!
    And hey, Ellefson is a beast and a staple. The og Mega bassist.
    And fuck dudes, what do you say about Marty???
    The guy isn't from this planet man.... he's an enigma.
    His solos are eargasmic!
    And, btw, he toned it WAY down he said, for the Megadeth stuff. Dave wanted great solos, as usual, but he also wanted to keep Marty on a tight leash....but, we Megadeth fans know all about how Dave has treated and gone through some awesome guitarists!

    Carvin Quad X tube pre did the tube stacking thing VERY well! They called it tube cascade. You really should get your hands on one. Four channels, awesome foot-switch, boost and bright switches, a separate effect loop for every channel and a master effect loop. Reverb loop as well if you don’t prefer the spring tank. Separate graphic EQ too. All analog programmable or midi if you desire. Don’t think I will ever part with mine.

    I tried a Dumble in '87. The best way I can describe the gain is chewy. Not as high gain as a Boogie, but higher than what you'd get out of a standard Tweed, with lots of headroom, control, response. Very high fidelity, but very much organic in a guitar sense. They feel good to play.

    I also think that Dave Mustaine was a big fan of the BBE Sonic Maximizer. Those were great devices for adding clarity to many high gain setups. I remember hearing one with a modded Marshall plexi and holy cow what a difference. The time shifting of the low end from the high end was like taking a blanket off your amp. So any way, Marty might have also used the BBE as well.

      Pretty sure you're correct on all points. IIRC I've seen pics of his rack back in the day that had it. I have an original 422 in my rack (the best one imo) and it is a night and day difference in tone. The DI-100 is pretty good too. The modern versions are worthless for guitar. Showed my son in law and he went on a quest to get his own 422 lol.

    • @todd6726
      @todd6726 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@user-pc8vn6ym7r You are so right. I used a 422 for a long time in my rack as well. I used it with an ENGL 50watt head in a wet/dry setup with a Palmer load box and a tube power amp. It was an awesome sound. Now I am using a Kemper (which is fantastic). I never understood why the BBE got a bad reputation from guitar players.

    • @user-pc8vn6ym7r
      @user-pc8vn6ym7r 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@todd6726 I am pretty sure the 'bad reputation' is related to the vast difference between the original 80's versions (like I have) and the redesigned 90's ones. Someone would hear the hype and go try a (newer and much prettier) model that just did not sound nearly as well for guitar. That was precisely the experience of an old school mate of mine, and my son in law. He absolutely hated the brand new one he tried, and brought it back.
      The great part is these were built like tanks, and there are a lot of working old ones still knocking around. Some may need new pots or jacks, but that's about it. All of mine are fine. One has a scratchy pot I'll get around to changing at some point, but I never change the dial in anyways, so no rush.
      I have heard Kempers are really good. I guess I'm an old school (mostly) analog kind of guy. PRS/Ibanez->ISP Decimator->(handbuilt)Klone->BognerUberschall/BoogieVTwin->Alesis 3630->DSP4000(w/422 in loop)->RandallMT100 loaded->Boogie cabs. Yes, most of it's old. But it's mostly stuff I drooled over when I was younger. And it's all bulletproof.

    • @todd6726
      @todd6726 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@user-pc8vn6ym7r Good to know on the BBE...although I dont think I will ever have a rig like my old one. I have to stay mobile nowadays. I use my kemper with a QSC K12 powered speaker and it works awesome. I have a tele and have found so many great low gain and crunch profiles for the Kemper. I just downloaded about 120 profiles this week for $20 (tonejunkie sale). 3 matchless amps and the Boogie LoneStar. I have used most modeling amps at various times from Line6, Vox, and Hughes and Ketner. But the Kemper is the real deal. It isnt cheap but it really is awesome for tone. They really knocked it out of the park with the Kemper Stage model so you have the stage board and amp in the same unit. I wish you luck in your musical endeavors:)
