OD 1 is the best channel on it, I think. They nailed that one. Everything on 4 and boosted with a neutral Boss GE-7 with neutral EQ and level on full is really good.
Marshall was outstanding with their solid/hybrid state stuff back n the day. I had a Valvstate 80..something stereo combo that would roll heads, live and otherwise.
I had a 9004 that sounded amazing on recordings. A 9001 was my workhorse for over 10 years. Can’t say how authentic it sounded, but I loved it. Having said that, I knew a guy who had the JMP-1 with matching power amp and I lusted after that rig.
I had a 9004 for a while and I remember hating it, found it super muddy. Good to see you find a nice tone out of it. The lead 12 and jmp-1 were my favorites, and this video talked me out of buying a guvnor for use of a preamp so thanks!
It is which is why after watching this video I went and bought one. I find it need more hight end but it's easy to get off your power amp. I boost it with an Eq in front boosting in the mids like upside down V shape. Love it and want another one for live use now. Feels amazingly touch sensitive.
Awesome - In the studio I use Marshall (JVM 410, JCM 900, JMP-1) Peavey JSX and ENGL Thunder 50 and a bunch of profiles but after this I gonna have to add the Marshall 9004 - I never heard it played before but it's going to added to the toolbox - Thanks for the video
I still have my jcm 9000 Poweramp 300 watts per channel. The crazy thing about it is that it makes every preamp I plugged into it sound like a Marshall...
Thanks for this video! I used to be really curious about those 9000 series preamps when I was trying out the rack approach. Sounded pretty good to me; maybe I should have got one, lol. I also appreciated seeing the Lead 12 used in a preamp way. Kind of makes me wanna try out my Lead 15 Micro Stack the same way. I've never used the line out feature before and seeing this makes me think its worth trying.

Michael...I heard you playing "Inside Out" from XYZ at the end. Right on man! It is one of my favorite hair metal songs too. Back in the day I got a demo cd of it with just that on the disc. I learned it right away!
To this day i use 9005 50+50 valve power amp as my main amp,... Could never get the MGP9004 pre to get a sound i liked so got a jmp1 and it sounds amazing with it, amazed at the sound you got out of that 9004, gobsmacked 👍
according to the 9004 manual, the front headphones out is "filtered", i.e. speaker simulated and to be used as either a headphones out or a recording out - I don't own the 9004 (yet), so I can't say anything about its quality used that way
The 9004 was my first "real" amp/pre-amp. (Still have it, BTW). Upgraded to an ADA MP-1/Alesis .50Cal + rig (Also still have, minus the .50 +). Good stuff!
cool vid...the trick to tweaking the lead 12 is finding the sweet spot in the pre amp gain setting...try turn up first pre much higher than u normally would, and turn the master low down... love these amps.
This days I play thru a solid state rig for my practice which is peavey tanstube preamp out into SPX90 -> Korg SDD delay into a BIG Yamaha PA amp (400w) into two mesa 1x12. Sounds very good but the thing is I like the sharp attack of the note and my Marshalls can have a bit of rest! (This started as Wet side rig, I plugged the peavey just cos.... you know why not?!). So I totally dig the small preamp you got there!
Mike, Good video series with the preamp rackmount stuff. Its a little foreign to alot of people who are not experienced with the rackmount gear. It would be great if you could do a little bit of an in depth video on how to connect all this stuff up properly, and demistify it. Im still kind of learning about it. Thanks!
I also had the 9004, bought it for 20GBP in a fire damage sale from our local music shop in Belfast. Thats another rack you make sound awesome. Mine was terrible.. im detecting a pattern here..
I preferred the JMP-1, but the 9004 definitely sounds good. The real surprise was the Lead 12. Just what I needed... more stuff to think about buying...
It would be interesting to see much the power amp changes the sound. I really dig the sound of 9004 and JMP-1 with the VHT. I have a JMP-1 but with the valve state power amp. Thinking about buying a used 9100. Would be cool to try the VHT against a 9100 (or any other power amp for that matter...)

White Lion! Cool video. You should try the ART Power Plant preamp if you like the rackmount stuff. It sounds great and is loaded with ins and outs. Very versatile.
If my memory serves me well, the Marshall 9001 and/or 9004 pre-amps are the sound on AC/DC’s The Razor’s Edge album and the following “Live” album in 1991.
I had two Marshall Lead 12's back in the day. I think I blew out the speaker in the first one and the other is either back home, or at a friend's house. Great little practice/recording amp. I didn't appreciate it until much later on.
The small solid state combo sounded pretty good with reverb added,am getting ideas now,gonna get one and chop it down and house it in a rack and make into a faux JMP1 kinda like poor man's version of it albeit...
Would love to see a video comparing the 2150 to the Power Station? I saw the "ONE Preamp Four Power Amps!" video, but comparing two Fryette/VHT power amps would be interesting, especially considering the size/weight/wattage/price differences.
Great preamp videos - nice Vito Bratta Hungry riffage! Questions: 1)are you using the speaker emulated outputs on the preamps? 2)After the preamps, what signal chain/processing is going on? Watching your other JMP-1 videos made me want to get one after all these years. I also have the 9004 in a old rack that I never use anymore!
I've owned all these at some point! Still have the drivemaster (a guv'ner essentially) somewhere, was great as a boost if you put the mid on full. I'm sure billy gibbons used the lead 12 on afterburner? Maybe
damn,I have them all! The Lead12 was my first real amp in 1987. I remember at that time Dokken "Back for the attack" came out and that little beast had the same agressive tone like GL on that album.
0:33 - Cab sim wasn’t a thing back in 1990! You & I are the same age; the only Cab sim at the time was Palmer PDI boxes, which were super rare and hard to get; and maybe the H&K Redbox ... and none was so glorious anyway.
well, there was also the marshall se 100, but it apparently didn't have the coolness factor or hardly anyone noticed, the cab simulation was based on a groove tubes unit that van halen used allegedly. Still have to see and hear it in person though ;) hard to come by these days it seems
@@maxmustardman298 I had one of those too. I left it in consignment at a store and they went out of business with my unit. I had picked-up an early THD Hotplate and it sounded better. The SE-100 sounded thin and a bit nasal, it wasn’t a good match for the Peavey 5150 I had then. I still have that Hotplate. Lukather is the only guy I recall ever being seen with a SE-100. It would be fun to check one out now, ~25 years later. I was running a 5150, the SE-100, a GSP-21, and a 8008 power amp, into three ADA 2x12s.
@@maxmustardman298 The Hotplate can be a power soak or a full load, and has a line-out. It also has a bit of EQ to add some bass and/or some top end. The only thing it doesn’t have (compared to the SE-100) is the XLR out.
My iPhone XR listening experience preferred the 9004 the best, especially with the kids scooped. I think scooped mids and the quick frequency spikes of solid state just work great. Seems like thrasher metal bands like Pentera would prefer solid state over the flabbier bass response of tubes.
Ahhhh...... just saw this (older) video........ I thought it was the 'valve' preamp 9000 series you had....... which I owned and sadly sold before I received the JMP1 rack Preamp (according to the Marshall Rep, he assured me it was identical except for the programability)........I believed him unfortunately....... when I played the JMP1 for the first time and dialled in the clean selections, I was so disappointed. A different beast altogether. I miss the 9000 ....... Ah well.
the 9004 sounded pretty cool. it'd be interesting to see what it sounds like into the front end of a tube clean channel. could be terrible but who cares. lol.
If something like the jmp1 but with knobs exists for kinda the same price, i want it. I've got a helix floor and it would be a breeze swapping that preamp to let's say even a fender hot rod deluxe

i had one of the marshall 9000 preamps...the one with the "voice" controls, rather than the three band eq. i think it was the 9001. it sounded like ass. just couldn't get a decent tone out of it. surprised by how good that 9004 sounds....not too far off the jmp-1!
Damn you Nielsen, I just saw one of these 9000 at local musician marketplace. It's like you were following what I see and wonder about and make a vid to demonstrate. Definitely not a bad unit. Just sounds a bit messy, not as much "finesse" and "liveliness" as in some better amps. But definitely more girth than some amps in their rock drive. The other ones were pretty nasty but workable. And I know guvnor is great when you put it in the right place the right way.
As much as I don't want to believe it, I think all the good distortion circuits have been exhausted. I think all these modern amps are just recycling old designs with a few more bells and whistles. Both rackmount preamps were indistinguishable from one another on my PC speakers. Both sounded great. Even the combo eventually sounded pretty good. You need to get your hands on a Groove Tubes soul-O 75 and see what you think. By far my favorite amp and it wasn't even touted for it's dirty (scream) channel. It was the fender style clean is what it was famous for. They also made a 3 channel preamp called the Trio but it didn't have the balls of the amp. The amp had a fat switch that made the dirty channel huge. When it was not engaged the dirty channel was bleh. The Trio kind of was like they split the amp channel into two halves and neither one worked as well as the amp version. One was kind of squashy and full of rich harmonics and the other was tight and generic brown sound. The amp seemed to combine those characteristics for a huge beefy brown sound that would turn any note into a pleasing overtone feedback that would hold as long as you did. Anyway. Great video!
I have both the 9001 and the 9004 and the 9001 is killer with my 9005 poweramp for heavier metal. I just went over the 9004 on channel and next week, I'll run through my 9001. Not my style, but great playing.
Man, I wish you could’ve tried the 9001.....I had one years ago and thought it was “meh”.....but, I don’t really think I had good enough “ears” to get the most out of it....dug the the vid, though 👊🏻

The 9004's were actually a killer preamp- but since they didn't have 128 presets- we considered a flop. Great work as always Michael!

I have a JMP1, I like it for the bold clean tone which makes my wah stand up and shout! It has a soft and a bright clean tone channel also

I love Bogner cabinets with V30s! My favorite and makes those Marshall rack preamps sound great! The pedal can stay in the closet. Lol A little XYZ! 👍

Lead 12 certainly came to life after a bit of tweaking. That Bob Bradshaw trick could be worth investigating.

I think the headphone out on the 9004 is cabinet simulated, but having only looked at the schematic, it probably sounds like arse.

Damn you Nielsen, I just saw one of these 9000 at local musician marketplace. It's like you were following what I see and wonder about and make a vid to demonstrate. Definitely not a bad unit. Just sounds a bit messy, not as much "finesse" and "liveliness" as in some better amps. But definitely more girth than some amps in their rock drive. The other ones were pretty nasty but workable. And I know guvnor is great when you put it in the right place the right way.

As much as I don't want to believe it, I think all the good distortion circuits have been exhausted. I think all these modern amps are just recycling old designs with a few more bells and whistles. Both rackmount preamps were indistinguishable from one another on my PC speakers. Both sounded great. Even the combo eventually sounded pretty good. You need to get your hands on a Groove Tubes soul-O 75 and see what you think. By far my favorite amp and it wasn't even touted for it's dirty (scream) channel. It was the fender style clean is what it was famous for. They also made a 3 channel preamp called the Trio but it didn't have the balls of the amp. The amp had a fat switch that made the dirty channel huge. When it was not engaged the dirty channel was bleh. The Trio kind of was like they split the amp channel into two halves and neither one worked as well as the amp version. One was kind of squashy and full of rich harmonics and the other was tight and generic brown sound. The amp seemed to combine those characteristics for a huge beefy brown sound that would turn any note into a pleasing overtone feedback that would hold as long as you did. Anyway. Great video!

I have both the 9001 and the 9004 and the 9001 is killer with my 9005 poweramp for heavier metal. I just went over the 9004 on channel and next week, I'll run through my 9001. Not my style, but great playing.

Have you tried a Marshall DRP-1. I encourage you to check out Frenzel, they do great Marshall, Fender and Hiwatt preamps.
Man, I wish you could’ve tried the 9001.....I had one years ago and thought it was “meh”.....but, I don’t really think I had good enough “ears” to get the most out of it....dug the the vid, though 👊🏻
