The difference between Mountain Dew and Diet Mountain Dew is pretty obvious, but if you sub Mountain Dew Zero for Diet, or Mountain Dew Throwback for Mountain Dew, you'll see a much smaller gap in the taste.

I think you can always taste the difference between real sugar drinks and non-sugar drinks if you really try, like they said there is always a different after taste. That being said, there is a huge difference between "diet" drinks and "zero sugar" drinks. Most of the diet drinks have a slightly different flavor profile.
Blind test doesn't usually involve committee decision and discussion about which is which. They confounded their own results by exclaiming what each one is. Still fun of course, but totally inconclusive due to data pollution.
Someone needs to get Tectone a wireless mic next time. As a broadcast engineer it was killing me that he spent at least 50% of the episode so far forward I could barely hear what he was saying. That being said I love this podcast and you guys are great!

Meanwhile other people can drink an entire bottle and not burp, or if they do it is like once then they are done. Kind of weird, I wonder if it is a psychological habit or if there is just something physiologically different.

Then I started drinking it way too much and thought about my options, get cancer or lose my legs to sugar and thought cancer would be better and changed regular to Zero. Now years after I'm not 400 lbs and if I drink regular Cola it tastes so bad.

Not gon lie, despite the Coca-Cola saying the ingredients are the same world wide, I had an imported coke zero from the US and it taste like ass compared to the Australian Made one. Straya Coke Zero is practically identical to regular Coke.
I also tried Soda taste testing, got every single one and knew them without a doubt in my mind (even tho I have pretty much stopped drinking them for a extremely long time) I have no clue how anyone could ever get them wrong, actual busted tastebuds.

Sugar tastes good, if you regularly consume it. There is actually a neurological component to it. If you give up sugar for a month, then have a sip of regular soda, it will not taste good. Not that the "fake sugars" ever taste good.. Stevia is hard to get used to. Almost the opposite process of cutting out sugar. But once you do get used to it, it's better than sugar ever was. Stevia is also not chemically made. It's a plant extract. Unfortunately it's pretty hard to find soda that's sweetened with it, because it's more costly than sugar (thanks to sugar subsidies).

Starry is replacing Sierra Mist btw. Sierra Mist had cane sugar and Starry is corn syrup, apparently the ingredients are the same other than that.

Sugar tastes good, if you regularly consume it. There is actually a neurological component to it. If you give up sugar for a month, then have a sip of regular soda, it will not taste good. Not that the "fake sugars" ever taste good.. Stevia is hard to get used to. Almost the opposite process of cutting out sugar. But once you do get used to it, it's better than sugar ever was. Stevia is also not chemically made. It's a plant extract. Unfortunately it's pretty hard to find soda that's sweetened with it, because it's more costly than sugar (thanks to sugar subsidies).
