I dont think you put enough paste on, I think you are supposed to splash it everywhere so your entire motherboard is gold!
On a serious note, shouldn't the entire contact area of the chip be covered?
when you apply force by the coolers flat side, it spreads the paste. You really dont need that much thermal compound :) If it doesnt spread onto all the corners is still not a problem. Under the heatsink, the chip is near at the middle.. so yea. The amout Linus put is more than enough.
The cooler sits on top of the cpu tight enough for the paste to squish out and cover it.
The most popular (and arguably best) method is to put a rice-corn sized dab in the middle of the CPU and let the heatspreader push it into the corners. You really don't need much paste.

Rootzy's Tech Linus builds a PC/server every few videos so he needs that much thermal compound

LaSombra CS:GO but he's rich
Well you should be cleaning your PC out once a year, and that's a good time to re-do the thermal compound on your CPU and your GPU(s). But you wouldn't need a big $100 jar that only has a shelf life of 2 years, there are smaller amounts you can get with better quality. I'm sure most AIO makers use thermal paste in bulk and put them in the little syringes we get.
That depends on the thermal compound you use. A good thermal compound will last far more than 1 year, without losing efficiency.

That's 16 years for 3 grams. 1 kilo is 333 times more than 3 grams X 16 years, that's enough for a little bit more than 5000 years. I'm just glad I also have amazon prime so I'll get that shit tomorrow.
This one will be good for PC builders or engineers in large companies with lots of PCs to maintain.
No this particular one. I wonder how much one kilo of silver compound is.
Ok but LMG doesn't do 1 build every 5.3 years
TH-cam5000 Get new for your new build. After a few years performance is shit
This stuff isn't good enough for use in a PC repair/maintenance business. If I had a business like that, I'd take a closer look at something like the Arctic MX-4 20g tube. It's good, fairly cheap, and due to the low density of MX-4, 20g will be enough for a great many PCs.
Also, I wouldn't use thermal compound older than 10 years.
This is what they used in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 for those gold people.
well it is mostly only copper powder in it and some grease.
Use it at work for brakejobs (Car mechanic) and it does last a long time, at least 1 year on a car that is beeing used every day an high pressure washed every week.
The only downside is that when standing in a tub it separates a little over time but just mix it and it is conductive.
It usually holds up to over 500 degrees Celsius.
I think you have applied it badly, from the video it is to little.
Using it on my computer right now since i forgot to order thermal paste when rebuilding my computer and it is cooler now (was some regular non metallic, non diamond from before
And as Série B says in the comment you are comparing it to diamond paste which is the most expensive available and might also be the best thermal conductivity on the planet (Diamond)
Standard "thermal paste" = lithium grease with color die ... unless its white .. then its just white grease .. used in food production machinery. . Inside closed spaces .. seat slides in cars .. (it can't rot or mould)
A tub of it costs $10 ? bucks at your local car part dealer.
It would male a good coolant .. if it was thinner.
Awesome channel guys .. chears for the abvise you give .
No comparisons?
A single product from a single brand?
This doesn't answer the question posed in the title.
Rather, it should be "Is it worth buying this exact specific product in bulk?"
Xclusivity Do you honestly think that buying that much thermal compound is worth it? even if it was high quality
If you run a computer repair shop or a job that requires you to work with computers/ servers then yes. When I was shadowing the IT guy at the college I went to he had a jar of thermal paste and about 12 tubes of the arctic aluminum paste. The jar was for the computers and laptops and the tubes was for the servers.
Depends on the needs of the customer, computer repair shops might, businesses that assemble their own hardware might.
There are several instances where people might want to buy thermal compound in bulk.
At the very least LTT could have gone with a decent brand offering a well-known product in bulk quantities.
For example, www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm
That at least gives people a more valid reference point.
Then they could even compare application method and performance of standard thermal compound in tubes vs. bulk.
Ya really this only applies to computer hardware businesses that constantly apply and\or reapply thermal paste. I mean one tube that comes with your heat sink is enough to do several reapplications.
Would be interesting to see the price for those commercial quantities of Arctic Silver. 100-500 grams
HY610 is one of the cheapest thermal compounds that you can buy. No wonder why it flopped on a CPU with a 140w TDP. Seriously, go type "thermal compound" on ebay and sort low to high. i've used it on a few of my el cheapo rigs, and I can say with confidence that HY610 is cut with peanut butter and toothpaste.
tacobellchihuahua do you know if the HY710 is any better?!
Yes, it is quite a bit better. If you can get the HY810, it is going to be even better.
Most of the problems with the very cheap thermal paste, like the one Linus used, is consistency within the paste itself, the materials used, and the quality control of the thermal paste.
I've tried the HY610, the 710, and the 810, and both the 710 and 810 are a big step up from the 610.

Yup. It's called anti-seize.
It's typically used on fasteners so they don't break off when you're trying to unscrew them. I'm not sure if they still do but Glock at one point used it for lubrication on thei pistols from the factory.

Because it is supposed to be used for transistor amplifiers or triac switches cooling where high performance heat conductivity is not required but bigger packages come in handy for those applications
Of course the bulk grease will be worse as it has lower thermal conductivity, you could have checked before buying and tried to buy something with similar thermal conductivity.

This Thermal Paste/ Grease would be very good for a tech store that repairs computers, like a tech enthusiast that runs a small buisness of repairng computers so that stuff wouldn't be that bad for that cause. It's not good for gaming but for regular use it's more that enough, it's not the best but it definetly beats the crap out of the most pre-applied thermal paste. Maybe that's why they made it. I don't think it's bad but just not "used" right.
Even for gaming. C'mon, 6 degrees is almost nothing. I have a 2500k@4.6Ghz at 60 full on Artic Silver. With these cheap thermal compounds i have 70 or little more. But with a 1,99$ here in Brazil I have 50g easily!

I have a ~14-15 yr old tube of Arctic Silver 5 that I use off and on, I just don't build enough PCs to need a ton of this stuff. Used it this Spring on a build, performs just like day 1.
I make industrial grade oil drilling grease for a living and I can safely say that looks like something I make. I can definitely say the color is from the copper flake in it, and the fact that oil has separated out is a pretty typical problem of any grease. Of course with copper it makes it highly conductive. So yeah copper grease. Not thermal compound.
im pretty sure that thermal compound is not meant for pc processors. im pretty sure its meant for large industrial heatsinks on things like transformers where you need to literally paint it on.
The packaging label did specifically say it was for CPU, VGA and so on. So... no. ;)
eBay is currently full of "1000W LED grow lights" that are $150 and 30x20cm. Another example.

The twist at the end gets you my like
Gatewayuser200 Clive, is that you?
Also USB flash drives that are advertised at a much greater storage capacity than they actually provide.

Wait.. now is 2019
R.I.P Linus
2020 now beotch, get with the times old man
he lives
@@2thpaste may he has a dubber or some shit
2020 dude
TBH Synergy low key works great. got it for my desktop and laptop and love it. thanks linus..
3:54 Thermal grease is NOT thermal paste for CPU's it's for lubricating while having thermal transfering.
Thermal grease is synonymous with thermal paste. And it is for CPUs. From the Amazon description: "Apply to CPU, VGA, LED, Chipset and other PC components"
It looks pretty much like the copper paste, which is used for lubricating.
To my knowledge, it is used as a thermal resistant lubricant.
I use it to lubricate certain components of my brake system.
yes it looks like copper grease, used to lubricate cylinder head bolts prior to installation, brake parts and other auto parts that get hot
But that's where you're wrong, Dan. Thermal Grease and thermal paste are two words for the same exact thing - Further shown by the fact that the labels even say so.
Look it up...
+Sakkura Don't believe what Amazon sellers put in their descriptions. There are people on there that would sell you a donky as a horse if they could
HI Linus,
some time ago, you've asked us for advice on what new material you should bring in the show, and I have it.
Call it "trade little secrets", where you should discuss all the small and peculiar findings and tips regarding PC's in general.
Things that help you when you do something, easiest ways to do it, best materials/and so on.
I hope this comment finds you. Likes would help, so please like it! :)
Warm regards to everyone!

Love the pulse way ad that linus starred in befor the video loaded 😂 double linus for half the price
Imagine rgb thermal compound. My god.

"Do we have anything to apply this thermal to the CPU?"
"Well, I have this little stick from a Dunkaroos that I didn't use."
I could see this stuff actually having a use in something like a a storage server application where they are running xeon processors and the loads aren't insane, I know this is a use for it because it is what is used in the storage servers of most NSW schools
I usually have 2 sets of thermal paste; cheap low quality stuff (I've got some hy510 here @ 1.93W/mk) and some higher quality stuff like kryonaut or mx4. I save the better stuff until i need it, but most of the time the cheapo stuff does the job just fine and it costs almost nothing. As long as temps remain in spec and lower than the thermal margin, its not a problem.
I'd like to see Linus cosplay Peanut Butter Baby in this stuff
Bungo YT He would probably get a full body rash.
At least he'd be cool :')
Mayonnaise is better than certain thermal paste
Super glue is way better.
I actually tried Nutella, my CPU reached almost 100°C...
It was peanut butter
I thought mayonnaise was an instrument tho
Uncle Quacker
you made me quac... laugh. You made me laugh.
Thank you, Linus for buying it. It saved me $90. 😀
I already bought hy510 and regret it 😭
Datasheets exist for a reason - You can buy anything in bulk - including quality products... but you need to check and make sure what you bought is what you wanted. As for the shelf life... put it in the fridge and you can fix that problem. Get a non silicone thermal grease with the highest heat conductivity you can find, that is rated for the temps you intend to run at.
4:30 Well thats a good reason not to get the white colour
Thermal Cumpound
did you check if it spread correctly?
Yeah... That is what I expected too. The inconvenience of not having it in a tube. Why did Linus not comment on that, and why did he not use the small pea or rice grain sized blob in the middle. I mean, they did a video about it! If half the area have to conduct heat through air, no wonder!
Yeah, I think I'd have gone for an old-school full spread with that stuff. Realistically, though, if you were actually gonna use goop from a tub like that, you'd be better off just loading it into a syringe for daily use. But we don't expect that sort of forethought from Linus. :)
My thoughts exactly. Let's do something in an inferior way and then insult the product! Yeah, that MUST be the problem here!
They have an earlier video where they show that it makes little difference how you apply thermal compound.
Correct. The how doesn't matter. But you still need to use enough thermal paste ^^
It’s now 2019. Linus is going to die in a thermal compound related “accident”.
More thermal paste tests!!!
looks like rebranded copper lubricant
KY Brand Thermal Compound, for when you just need to reduce the friction and heat, there is no substitute
Did anyone else notice that on the container it says HY600 but on the side, it's checked off as HY610?
I would assume it means it's HY600 series. x10, x20, x30, x50 would indicate different versions of the HY600 series.
1:27 linus is edging up to fifty years? he looks great
