    When I lived in Durban I had a Blue with Tan leather 79 116 280S. The best riding car I've ever owned. Closest description I could give of it would be rather like flying a jet just above the ground, or perhaps floating along like Luke's Landspeeder in Star Wars. It was a fantastic car to do insane speeds in on the N1 between Durban and Jhb.

    Good to see young folks like Karl keeping the passion for classic Mercedes alive! My first experience with a Mercedes was in a W116 280 S. It was in silver green (I think colour code was 881), but I don't remember what the interior was like. I hope to find an immaculate W116 280 S in the same silver green colour one day.

    • @GalimotoMedia
      @GalimotoMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, thank you for your comment! 881 is Thistle Green, a stunning colour for the W116 and we hope that you will find that 280S real soon. :)

    I own a burgundy red W116 1980 Mercedes 300SD that I got 2 years ago from a farmer in Northern California. He had it stored in his separate garage from 1985 when he parked it with only 67k miles on it. It was not running since it had been parked for so long but it had no rust or major problems basically mint condition. Got it running and now it’s been my daily driver. Feels weird being in it around Tesla’s and new cars but I love it and go everywhere in it. Only thing I don’t like about the car is the paints hard to keep up with as it gets dull without constantly polishing it.

    Thank you for a well researched series. Just a comment on the bullet proof model that was offered, known as the Armourlite! Discovered this info in a British book on the series. I had the pleasure of a 1973 Signal red 350SE with white leather and Webasto electric roof. Always felt very very small driving the car as it was like a rugby field inside. I was also fascinated by the Frigidaire a/c compressor the car had, and which worked extremely well. Sadly sold the car many years ago, but have now fallen for the w123s ( have a CE and sedan) so my next question is rhetorical!! Thanks for your great channel.

    What a great series thank you so much for giving us a lot of detailed information on the w116. I am looking to buy and old mercedes, I am torn between w116 and w123. I love the w116 and it looks like it's still affordable in South Africa but I need a daily driver at the moment, the w116 might be too much...

    Great series, thanks for uploading. My father owned two of them between 1974 and 1985 and I loved those cars. Mostly you see these with the curved inner door upholstery, but we had the straight, like all of the cars in your series have. Is this something relating to export, in other words did some countries only get the straight upholstery?

    • @GalimotoMedia
      @GalimotoMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind comment! We've gathered that all 280 models had the straight door trim while 300 / 350 and up featured the rounder, more curved design. Our (South African assembled) models were 280S, 280SE and 350SE which all had the straight design.

    Me llama la atención el w116 azul y el bordó que en la ventanilla trasera fija no termine curvo el embellecedor del marco , ¿ Se entiende ?

    • @GalimotoMedia
      @GalimotoMedia  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, that trim was usually reserved for the V8 models but all 280's (like the blue one) and South African 350's (like the red one) didn't have that curved trim.

    I'll contribute for W116 chassis... my late uncle, W116 280se .. code 861 silbergrün with mb-tex similar shade (interior code unknown) .. 3 speed auto.. beautiful sound when accelerated. The Benz exhaust pipes "zizzle" with that classic fuel injected buzzing resonance. Both his W123 chassis 280e and 280se sound similar.
    He was ahead of his time considering the value of these W116 supe-rare cars in Europe today (🇬🇧 spec £10k+ for concourse condition).
    Through ignorance, our family teased him as a bit of a fuddy-duddy fossil - vertraag, square, boring - because a: our family were born Toyota 🤪 fanatics...
    b: he was a petrolhead and we were vertraag, square, boring bushveld-babies 😄
    In Germany 🇩🇪 these cars are sacred.. in fact every classic BMW (blik met wiele), DAIMLER today is cherished...
    In GB, UK spec cars are hen's teeth being RHD and rust-free to rust-minimal versions are all that's left with most having turned into Carling Lager tins:
    As of today, there's 73x 280se 's showing as road taxed (up from 55x in 2020 - people are restoring these cars, rapidly) & 32x 350se 's .. up from 19x taxed in 2015. 14x 450se 's taxed, up from only 7x in the whole country 2013.
    I can't wait for W126 chassis footage. These 80's models are what I drive and restore (500sec series 1)

    Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned
    from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the
    Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
    on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas
    station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel
    pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in
    the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems,
    turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and
    New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be
    done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of
    crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. :-((((((///

    • @GalimotoMedia
      @GalimotoMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While that is absolutely sad, it won't affect us in southern Africa; or other developing countries like India, etc. Quite the opposite, actually, we will probably get all the old combustion cars from Europe!

    • @Schlipperschlopper
      @Schlipperschlopper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GalimotoMedia Oh yes I see, China tries to force all countries to finish with combustion related traffic, here in EU they paid millions to politicians and the greens for bannin combustion cars from 2030 on.

      @@bogdanbosoi1483 Yes the EU is the dead of any individualism and souverantiy, but dont forget China, PRC also dictates the end of use of all combustion cars worldwide. Chinas boss Darth Xi told all politicians that they wont do any business with underdeveloped countries that still allow CO2 emitting traffic, airplanes or combustion based industry after 2030...I am sure USA and UK also will be forced by China to 100% electric traffic because today no industrialized country can afford sanctions by China.... China also decided that their people wont become older than 65 years to to stop their over aging community....what that means you can imagine. We face a new silent mass murder over there. Lets hope that wont come over too.
