I have 1977 280SE which has been modified somewhere around the 90s. Now it has 5.0 V8 and transmission from newer W126 model. So the looks are from the 70s and the power and fuel economy from the 80s, which still are not too great 8-) But fun car and this W116 is not so common and especially not so desirable, yet..
I've owned 3 W116's. One Euro 350 SE with the high output 116 3.5 liter FI V8, and two 450 SEL 6.9's. One of the 6.9's , a Euro version, had an AMG version of the M100 6.9 motor. All the 116's are spectacular, well engneered, fun to drive cars.
The first modern car. This car is so diferent from all thepreviuos cars! In my opinion is a masterpiece.
Thank You! Nice reviews, I have enjoyed watching these. I have a W126, which have the same soft seats. My friend always falls asleep when riding my car. The seats on these are so comfortable (if the spings are OK). Nowadays the car seats are very tough, they don't comform your body. If the seats are designed in a bad way for your body, there is nothing about to do than change an another car.

This car is a pinnacle of German engineering in the 70's and was so advanced in all aspects. W123 aswell.
Quite often in Bosnia and Herzegowina people says there is only one car, meaning on Mercedes 🙂

Very good in everything. Owning a 450se, all your comments are approprieted concerning this very nice w116. The interior, the shape, the Mercedes moving, and those different atmospheres showing up . Très intéressant.. Merci!
Very nice review of a W116 in beautiful condition. As the reviewer say these are the perfect classic - old enough to look good and young enough to drive well. These were a bit "forgotten" but now many are being properly restored and their values going up.

The W 116 is pure elegance, very distinguished, if you got one of these models, it means, you have made it in society, still today, there are a lot of W116, models, whether it is 280S, 280 SE, 280SEL, 450 S, 450SE, 450SEL, but you also have the diesel variants, the 300S, 300SE, 300SD.
And the limited edition, 7,400 unit run of the 450 SEL 6.9, of which they actually did about 150 AMG's towards the end of the run.
@@3RTracing I just wonder, how many of those AMG 450 6.9,s are left, the 116 is a classic car, with those refined lines ,comfort, elegance, & the sportiness of AMG.
@@EnriqueLopez-hb5jn I think on the MB club site there is a 6.9 registry. I also think that if one posed the question to the club, you may find an answer to the actual total number of units produced and known of, and if there is a record of how many are left.

I have found one In Burundi , it's 450 SEL with 51000 km abandoned for 10 years now. It's not in good condition but for 450 US dollars I will pay it. What do you think?

i own w116 whata cool car but i have 2.4 diesel :;D
Do I have to be sincere? Gorbachev would hate it. That's the 280 D with its original rims and should also had been a V6 in the original plans. The 350 SE had differents rims and it was almost a 500 Sec that had been in the Desert doing some like a million miles on Diesel. Plus, it was green and not orange like those others chromium, premium tanks. The newer generation of 500 Sec never made it in time at Old Fashion with all that modern electronic. I am fifty years old, I'm not completely dumb. Was its very original carstereo an Autovox and not that copy of the Christine's movie?! Yeah, the trunk fits perfectly for dead bodies. It should be still a rear traction drive with very low grip on fresher snow. It comes with a Tribune's plate and not with Rafa's best, Roger that. I am still guessing witch paint job was in my expenses and why. Was its original roof window made of glass and the motor only to obscure to the rear seat? I don't know...
My 450 SEL seems a bit pretentious compared to this car but still a viable transportation option with 74K miles. Not much value in the US for these cars.
