    Many natural mosquito repellents actually work fairly well. "Fairly well" is translated to mean - much better than using nothing. However all of them that I have used and or made require frequent application. Frequent as in every 5 to 20 minutes

      Of all the mosquitoes you saw buzzing around in the video (and I was out there for three hours) none of them bit me. Maybe it was the Natrapel, maybe I was just quick enough to shoo them away before they could find a good place to bite. I don't know if it works on blackflies, as I didn't see a single one that day. maybe they would have come out in a few more hours closer to dusk.
      FYI: Right after filming, I put on more repellent for the walk home.

      Well I too agree with you on the deet. i do not like using the deet on my skin. However there are times when the mosquittoes are ferrocious along with voracious appetites. At those times, natural plant based repellents just may not be enough.

      I'm going to try one this weekend that has Picaridin in it. It's supposed to be effective for twelve hours between applications. We'll see :)

    If truth be told, nothing I have ever tried worked great. It is a numbers game. If deet keeps away 95% of mosquitoes , and there are a hundred around with in an hour, not bad. That is 5 bites per hour. But when there are 10's of thousands, you still end up getting a bad chewing. Thanks for the review.

    • @MuskratJim
      @MuskratJim  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I believe you're right. And for a lot of people just having them swarming and buzzing around your head is too much to bear. The best thing is to keep your skin covered as much as possible, so the only easy target they have is your face, then you can easily brush them away as they land and before they get to bite.

      It's supposed to last for 12 hours. You probably don't need anything that lasts that long just to walk your dog in the mornings.

    Hi Muskrat Jim, I have an old bottle of this but I think the formula may be different, it says Citronella as the key ingredient. It works for sure, perhaps not as well as the heavy duty Deet-based stuff though. I use another product called Beck-Olja Oil, it is Pine Tar based in a small glass bottle, it is made in Finland by a company called Wilma. Wilma makes a variety of natural products for the woodsman. This stuff works well, but has a strong Pine Tar smell that some do not like. I have noticed that when I have used it in hot, sunny weather it can burn my skin (I have fair skin though). All the Best to you WS.

    • @MuskratJim
      @MuskratJim  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there might be several formulations. The one I have, yours with citronella, and another fellow said his has permethrin in it. Mine has a refreshing woodsy smell to it, not perfume or smelly. Mine is easy to sweat off, so you have to re-apply every few hours, not six like the bottle says.

    I would love to see what happens in the same environment or setting when you use Repel. Also since it doesn't contain Deet and one of the main ingredients is lemon eucalyptus unlike yourself, I spray it on my neck and behind my neck also letting some hit the sides of my face and the top of my forehead of course covering my eyes. When I'm in the woods I also wear a hat but I spray my hat very well as well as the rest of my body even with long sleeves on and my boots. That's right head to toe with a generous amount, front and back. I'm in Virginia and when it's hot and humid especially after rain mosquitoes can be brutal but Repel works extremely well and I can be outside for hours without the mosquitoes biting me once. When you're in woods that deep with that many mosquitoes when you spray only a little bit and gently pat your face and the back of your neck they're so aggressive they're going to look for any part that doesn't have the repellent. So just think about it if they come for your face and then try to hover around other parts of your body there still smelling the repellent there keeping the majority if not all of them away depending on how much you put on. Repeal is simply awesome. If I want to take a break to eat or just relax even though I sprayed my body and my hat I'll pump out a few shots all around me. Just sharing my technique and I hope this helps.

    We're using Natrapel with 20% Picaridin. It works great on these down south swamp mosquitoes and I've yet to pick a tick off me. Picaridin is "supposed" to be safer than DEET and does not degrade synthetic material like DEET. We quit using DEET when it ate the non-leather parts of a high dollar pair of snake boots.

    • @MuskratJim
      @MuskratJim  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      DEET melts plastics, so you have to watch it around your eye glasses.
      Picaridin was only approved in Canada in 2012, so it's still fairly new around these parts. it is now called Icaridin up here, I don't know why they changed the name.
      In my search I found it's here in my local Canadian Tire Store (Automotive/Sporting Goods/ Hardware store). I'll have to pick up a bottle this week!

      Hahaha! They were SO BAD that I nearly took out my mosquito headnet tucked inside my bush hat. On video I think it would have seemed like a sign of weakness, so I didn't wear it, besides... I came out of that experience without a single itchy bite. The trick is to feel them on your exposed skin and get them before they get you :)

    • @MuskratJim
      @MuskratJim  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was recorded the first week of June that year. Most of our mosquitoes are active in the Spring (cooler temperatures) or in the Summer evenings (again cooler temperatures). As soon as the frost is gone the mosquitoes (and blackflies) come out.
