  • A simple and short video on how I upgraded my upper control arms to SPC ones in my Toyota Land Cruiser.

    Rode VideoMicro Compact Microphone: amzn.to/38avbmD
    GoPro Suction Cup Mount: amzn.to/3ndwLbF
    The Basics:
    The final piece of the puzzle! These control arms are a must for any lifted offroader. Its so easy, even you can do it on the driveway!
    The Problem:
    I've had the OME lift kit on my Land Cruiser for a while, however, i have never been able to get it to align properly due to the changed suspension geometry. This causes the suspension to bind and sometimes causes unpredictable hndling chracteristics. The SPC upper control arms correct the suspension geometry and eliminates the suspension binding.
    Affected:
    All lifted cars.
    Solution:
    Suck it up and upgrade the upper control arms.
    Repair difficulty: 3/10
    Repair time: 3 hrs

    Hey chow, thanks for the video! If you ever have to take these out and install again, just use either Vaseline or dielectric grease to hold the washers in place. Oh and i believe the balljoints come pre-greased and you only grease every 6 months. Cheers 🍻

    Thank you so much for al your videos!! Being a newbie 100 series owner who wants to work on the cruiser as much as possible, your videos are so helpful!!
    Just bought the SPC control arms and plan on doing the install soon. How are the arms and ball joints holding up for you? Also, do you recall what size wrenches I’ll need to complete the job?
    Thanks!!

      You’re welcome! They’re holding up great so far with zero issues. I don’t remember specific sizes of wrench but they were towards the larger sizes, 17,19,21,22

      @@chowcares I pretty soon started to get this squeak from the SPC UCAs (maybe about within 1 to 2 months) when the car goes over a bump or when the front wheels travels up and down, or even just with me rocking the car side to side. Are you experiencing any squeaking issues?

      It has more adjustment to fix the suspension geometry from the lift.

    You grease them so the old dirty grease is pushed out. So when you grease them make sure a little bit comes out of the bottom. BTW it's a ball joint. My ball joints are bad and I bought replacement ball joints to repair. Way better than spending another 800 for new SPC UCA's.

    • @chowcares
      @chowcares  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s true a replacement ball joint would work if you were running everything stock. With a lift, all the suspension geometry changes. Spc designed their arms to not only compensate for those changes, but be able to have some adjustments for specific situations. That’s why I said it’s a “upgrade” and not a repair.

    • @michaeltaylor7996
      @michaeltaylor7996 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chowcares No you're not understanding what I wrote. I have SPC UCA's and the ball joint in the SPC UCA's went bad. I replaced the ball joints on my SPC UCA's. They are serviceable. I hope that clears that up for you. 125 for the pair of replacement SPC UCA ball joints.

  • @TAkEdA31
    @TAkEdA31 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Now I’m second guessing purchasing my total chaos UCA’s since they have a spherical bearing instead of ball joint. SPC was cheaper than total chaos also. Are the spherical bearing that bad??!?

    • @chowcares
      @chowcares  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They’re great! Very precise and you can get a really good alignment. The main reason for me is when I go off-roading, dirt gets in there and it’ll start squeaking. I address this with some ptfe dry lube in another video. The more the bearing wears down, the easier dirt gets in there which causes more squeak

    How do I set the factory camber adjusters to 0? Also what kind of grease should I use for the uca ball joint? Thanks!

    • @chowcares
      @chowcares  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I remember the markings on the adjustment need to be perpendicular to the gound. I used synthetic moly grease from Valvoline or Mobil 1

      Best advice is to go ask a JEEP guy. Most Toyota / Lexus owners don't do random swaps (with few exceptions) to create frankensteins out of their trucks. We cherish our rides and most have a bond with them. Best of luck!!

    Do you think upper control arms change is necessary for 2" lift up?

    • @chowcares

    I have been looking into the 2.5" OME lift for my 99 UZJ100, but I have a friend who has had a really bad experience with his, however, I dont believe he replaced his stock UCAs nor did he do a diff drop, which could be the culprit. How has your experience been? Also, where did you order your UCAs from? Thanks! Great content!

    • @chowcares
      @chowcares  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I installed the ome lift I put in some aftermarket uppers immediately. It rode okay. When I put the spc ones it, there was a huge difference. The ride was ALOT smoother and handling was dramatically improved on and off-road.
      Stock uppers aren’t meant to deal with the extra lift hence why you buddy didn’t like it.
      As for the diff drop, it’s definitely on my to-do list, however, as of right now, it’s still holding up.

    Hey man does replacing these controls arms help with a sagging front end on the car ? Just wondering

    • @chowcares
      @chowcares  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it corrects the front suspension geometry from a lift. Sagging front could mean your torsion bars need to be adjusted or are worn.

    • @chowcares

      George Gizza you don’t “need” the upper control arms immediately. You can probably get away with an alignment. I was running pretty much the same setup as you for over 2 years. However, I noticed a huge difference when added the spc uca. The ride is noticeably better and it fixed the suspension bind I didn’t know I had.

    I have those on my 100 series and HATE THEM!!!
    The ball joints make noise almost immediately after install. Yes I greased them and yes with the correct grease. The control arm bearings/bushings also started to make noise about a year after instal.
    In my opinion dont buy these arms.
