    A simple and short video on how I greased the front and rear driveshafts in my Toyota Land Cruiser.
    The Basics:
    Maintenance is key to keeping a car running in top shape. Most people do oil changes, tire rotations, and top of fluids. However, not alot of people remember that the driveshaft needs attention from time to time. Its so easy, even you can do it on the driveway!
    The Problem:
    In any car, regular maintenance is the key to prolonging the life of the vehicle. Unfortunately, it is easily forgotten or skipped entirely, could cause catastrohic problems down the road.
    Affected:
    All cars.
    Solution:
    Spend a bit of time and do it yourself! All you need is a grease gun, some grease, and some patience!
    Repair difficulty: 2/10
    Repair time: 45 mins

    I think we need two different types of grease here: Moly for the slip yokes and non-moly for the spiders. I think I read this somewhere and that's what I do.

    Thanks again for a great DYI service tip. From my experience in general greasing of bearings, I grease until the “fresh” new grease is coming out of the seal. Purge that old grease that has done its job.

    A lincoln needle for the gun works great for the one in the u-joint. Have to hold it in place as it doesn't snap on like the other type. But MUCH easier to get into small spaces like that. For the slip yoke, FSM states that you don't want grease coming OUT of the joint, you want enough grease that you can see the slip yoke move a few millimeters.

      What's a slip yolk

  • @garyeanes4747
    @garyeanes4747 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Make sure to use MOLY grease only on the slip yokes. Since they operate under compression, moly is the appropriate grease for those. "Regular" grease can be used on the u-joints, but you could always use the same moly grease on them. I do an annual maintenance on my driveshaft slip yokes where I remove them, disassemble them, remove all grease from the slip yokes and repack them with fresh moly grease. I reinstall them on the rig and remove the Zerk fittings from the yokes. I drive a few blocks to "cycle" the yoke and then reinstall the Zerk fittings. LOVE the magnetic flashlight you have! What is the model?

    I've heard minimal grease if any on the front slip? Thought was too much grease (or what called for by Toyota) loads the pinion bearing and wipes them out? Great videos!

    • @chowcares
      @chowcares  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pinion bearings are torqued down via a big 17mm bolt. I don’t think more pressure from the grease would cause the bearding to wear out faster. The grease should take the route of least resistance which is the sleeve

    inspired noob here... Can you turn the drive shafts to position them for better access just by putting the truck in neutral? or do i need to just roll the truck and check every so often for better access? I don't have proper jack and stands otherwise. I'm about to buy the needed tools from amazon so i can attempt this! Thank you for the vids!

    • @chowcares
      @chowcares  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’ll need to roll the truck. Neutral will only disengage the gearbox, the driveshaft will still be connected to the wheels. Have fun!!

  • @DavidGarzaFamily
    @DavidGarzaFamily 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you need a special adapter? The gun and grease just came in from Amazon today, so I get to do this soon.

    • @chowcares
      @chowcares  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you just have to make sure the nozzle is completely inline with the zerk fitting for it to work. If it’s slanted to the side it won’t push grease into the u joint

  • @saisoku72

  • @DarrenMcManawaynz

    Why is your rear drive shaft on backward?
    Or a better way of asking that - why are ours different?
    I have a 2001 LC100 VX Limited - mine is the opposite of yours with the two nipples at the transfer case and the single at the axle.
    I'm assuming it doesn't actually make any difference - but it's odd all the same!

      I bought my cruiser last week. The test drive was great, no clunk. When I got home from the 90 mile drive, it clunked. I decided to start simple. I lubed the Ujoints with Green grease and the slip joints with MOLY grease. Fixed the clunk 100 percent. Give that a shot first before you attempt to tackle those pain in the butt bushings on the front diff.

      If you haven’t done it in a while it definitely helps, but it could also be your front diff bushings or your axle flanges. Grease is the cheapest thing to try.
