- You can use JJazzLab an open-source backing track generation software, together with a DAW and various VSTs to generate realistic backings tracks.
The idea is that you output MIDI from JJazzLab, pass it through the virtual midi port (created with loopMIDI), and input MIDI data into to Reaper mapping them to the appropriate channels and note ranges in order to trigger VSTs.

This looks really useful and the improvement in playback quality is wonderful! Now I just need to figure out how to do this in Linux...

I'm trying to get garage band to do this... so far, i have been able to get jjazzlab to talk to garage band, but I don't know if I can get it to talk to several different software instrument tracks simultaneously.... midi settings in garage band are not super-intuitive: no midi input dropdown on individual instrument tracks
Doesn't the drum need to be transposed too? It seems too minimal...
Yes! probably some drum mapping is needed there !
Do you have to use reaper, or would the kontakt player work?
