Blind test in a local shop proved that the sounds are good if people remove their bias. Most couldn't tell many of the amps apart and the Line 6's tube sounds were impressive. Many picked it over the real tube amp in a direct comparison. Don't listen to the biased haters - guarantee you most couldn't tell the difference either.
Why is everyone shitting on this thing? This is miles better than the IV series, still keeps the solid price point, has the wireless option, much easier to edit than the old series, etc. I'm a tube amp guy through and through, but look at the market this is pointed towards... great beginner amps and have great applications for recording. Sounds great for what it is!
Ryley Gallwey Haven't played one yet but I agree. I LOL at these "these amps suck, I'm going to keep my 1967 Marshall 100W plexi...it's got tubes", comments. They sound like total dumb asses. That's sounds about as stupid as the "I like the ESP but I'll keep my '59 all original Les Paul" 😆 No one cares what equipment you have. The audience won't give a damn only other douche bag guitar players will. A good guitar and amp just make a crappy guitarist sound louder. People need to stop knocking on beginners and sold state amps. No one cares but them.
The sound processing sounds a lot more refined over the older spiders. I don't regret buying my Spider. It got the tones I needed for what I could afford, cut through easily in a live setting, and very reliable. As usual, these products are still getting hate by "traditionalist" that typically have no proof of their gear or playing abilities, but I can say that these are great products that I recommend and I enjoy just as much as my more powerful Randall RG.
CrushedJustice I agree it's mostly people with heads up their asses. I've used line 6 for "direct in" applications. Worked well for recording. I haven't used it in live applications such as their amps because I wasn't sure how it would do cranked. Simple tube amps do well when cranked and tend to react in a live situation both have their place IMO but people need to stop shitting on them.
Im getting a 240 combo been playing these amps in gigs for 15 years they sound great - all styles - while all the old school guys lug around all there crap thats heavy and buzzes I just plug & play
For the price this is the best option you cant expect jcm 800 or a dual rectifier tone for the price like that, you can always get shit like bias but well you have to buy a high quality interface with it and i dont like to open my daw, interface and pc everytime, sometimes i just want to plug in and play.
Here's hoping Line 6 have realized that the fender super champ X, the blackstar TVP and the marshal code amps are kicking their ass at their own game and are stepping it up in sound quality from the previous spiders. The DT50 has good tone, but that's the only Line 6 amp I've ever heard that does (I have not heard the spider valve, but I've heard every other spider amp as well as the vetta and flextone)
I've heard them in store and they sound loads better than spiders i-iv. You should know better than to base judgment on TH-cam sound... Or maybe yours was just terribly dialed.
I've played them in store. I play a lot of Pop-Rock/Punk so I need a lot of high-end and cut. The Marshall seems too dark for me. Slightly more dialed for classic rock.
Dark sounding and classic rock don't really go together. classic rock sounds are generally very midrange. You should try the models that are more associated with modern metal sound, such as the JVM410H and the JCM800.
I play into a direct box on stage. Can I kill the speakers? It's a small auditorium and the sound guys get real testy when my speaker is bouncing off the back wall.
If it was included the amp would cost more, which forces the people who don't want it to pay more money for something they're not going to use. Makes more sense to keep the price lower, and make the transmitter available for the people who want it.
I mean, you can dial in some really good tones with a Spider amp. However, I think Line 6 would be doing themselves a favor if they dropped the "Spider" name.
I'll blame the mid-scoped, fizzy, over compressed sound on TH-cam compression and reserve judgement until I hear one in person. Oh my god, the bullshit he had to go through to change the delay setting, I think I'll still be keeping my pedal board for a while yet.
Imagine doing that on stage. Playing with your phone with one hand and and tapping notes with the other. Much easier to reach back/down and twist a dedicated knob a little bit.
I've had the spider2 for a long time. It has served its purpose but I find the distortion tones to be anemic compared to a lot of amps out there. It sounds like they didn't improve it on this one.
I'm honestly pretty impressed with a lot of the new features they added. The new interface, however, seems really inconvenient for the everyday user. On top of that, the JCM tone he was going for at first didn't sell me too well. And the cleans? I thought they were even worse... which is really saying something considering Solid state distortion is typically egregious and Solid state cleans tones can be AMAZING (Roland Jazz Chorus anyone?)
this comment section: "ugh line six back at it again with the garbage modeling amps! why don't they sound good as my $4000 setup with a custom Triple Rec, a full stack and analog effects?!"
Jason Ross The problem isn't that Line 6 Spiders don't compare to high end gear. The problem is that they don't even compare to other entry level modeling amps.
Exactly - it has nothing to do with comparing it to a 4K amp, and everything to do with comparing it to other amps in the price range. Every single amp within the price range sounds better than this junk. Obviously they have not invested in keeping up with the new modelling technology like other manufacturers. This sounds total SHIT! Hell the blackstar fly sounds better than this at a third of the price!
well a review form Ryan Bruce said the speak on this model amp not that good. when comes to distortion your really need a transparent sounding speaker that do not color your sound.
I had sold my spider iv last week lmao but anyways glad I got a better rig \m/! This spider v is better in features but not too much in sound in my opinion.
A nice Geek amp. Lots of new features. I have a firehawk FX, some tones are really really good. It's true high gain tones are not the best on low cost modeling amps. Try unniversal audio, Kemper or Fractal for that. But on most low cost modeling amp it's the same story with high gain. This spider V is like the new AMPLIFI serie but for live & gig. Amplifi serie are for fun at home. I like all these features. I ll try one as soon as possible. Maybe the spider sound is not the best but for the price and all features. I dont blame. I am sure clean & crunch will be good like AMPLIFI serie. But for the overall product quality, i prefer Fender, Roland/Boss or Marshall modeling amps.
I regret buying a Spider IV, I could've bought a new laptop, a pair of speaker monitors, and a bias fx USB device and would've gotten better tones than the shitty tones of the Spider, and would've still have more money to buy new stuff. In the words of Glenn Fricker, "The distortion sounds like fried assholes."
CrushedJustice except it takes fucking forever to get a decent tone on the fucking hunk of crap, the amp is shit, no other way to put it, get a fucking mesa boogie, revv, engl, peavey, orange, diezel, marshall, evh. Anything but a line SHIT amp
Jordan Gallaher It doesn't take long to get a good tone from them... If scooping mids and cranking everything else is good tone for you then, that's already a failed tone by default. Adding effects pedals also ruins an amps tone if over done, at that point the sound is mostly from the pedals.
this would be a good idea if they would let you trade in a spider iv toward a spider V without giving you 50 bucks for your old one so you can pay 400 dollars for a new one. line 6 took too long to come out with these anyway, no one will make the switch but their business model is to get guitar center to force noobs to buy these.. and they're running out of those.
Isn’t line 6 owned by fender and they sell a million of these things. As a business they are kicking butt. I wish I had half the sales figured they have and I’m sure other amp makers would too. Love em or hate em they are raking it in.
I hoped they woulda made the V an all tube or at least a tube pre. These amps are fun for fucking around with all the presets and weird sounds and practice but they don't have any ass to them for large venues. It's a shame really. I don't care tho I don't use any of the spiders, Mesa Boogie Triple R all the way!!! Hahaha
Granted it's not the best sound in the world, but then why would it be at such a low price? Loads of people are shitting on this amp without taking into consideration its target audience; a first or practice amp. I had a Spider IV as my first amp around five or six years ago and it provided all I ever needed at a time when I didn't really know any better. These new models are perfectly ideal for a beginner guitarist finding their way in the guitar world. These amps aren't about gigging, but more about beginners to intermediates finding what they like. That being said, I think my money would go on the new BOSS Katana amps, for the money there isn't really anything better in my opinion.
For the money you'd pay for this thing, you're better off buying a Fender Mustang 3. I've used (but not owned) Line 6 Spiders that I hated, I have a Mustang 3 for practicing (and for really small gigs) that sounds fantastic, especially for it's price range.
You hit hit a preset and it doesn't sound like the video? Most of these guys are using high end guitars .You gotta go in using the app and tweek it.This video sounds bad.
Why the hell would you mic up a full range speaker? These have XLR outputs for a reason. Micing a full range speaker is going to convince people the tone is shittier than it actually is. What you're doing here is micing an already "mic'd" sound. You aren't doing the cabinet model or mic models any justice at all. I can't help but imagine how the comments would differ if the signal was actually routed properly.
dID YOU GUYS AT LEAST FIX IT SO THAT WHENEVER I TOUCH A KNOB (OR GOD FORBID SWAP CHANNELS) THE AMP DOESNT FREAK OUT BY GOING 20dB HIGHER WITH THE FLANGE SET TO MAX?
is that a Variax Geech by chance? Also ... WAY TOO MANY dials & too much work to play a Geech. Why are these kids & noobs letting "Line 6" decide for them input feed for their signal chain. When I started in 1986, I taught myself what's what. I did NOT let someone tell me how. Did Jeff Beck? Did Keith Richards, The Who, SRV, Vai, Waters Gibbons, Satriani (I had an accident so my memory is horrible)? I really embarrassed that my brain cannot recall all my heroes. No great player had their sound preassembled. This is a serious point to be made. These amps are great toys for us to play Waters & sound like Waters, or Pantera with the actual sound of Pantera. I myself bought their 1st set of POD's when there where 3 of them the Jazz, Metal & the I forgot I was a great tool for a 2ndary stomp-box. To me the best compression & lead for solos, that part was wired at the front of the loop. The rest was a DI (mine was the rack model POD). I still needed skill. Which foot, which song. No program running the timing. Pardon, I've gotten carried away. Line 6 are perfect; if you want to be talentless & have someone do all your work. Play like EVH turn everything up to 10. Use you pinkie for your sounds. Peace to all you great rockers & rollers!
As a line 6 owner I must say,if you are chasing a good guitar tone......never buy a line6,there are better options out there, but if you want to play around with sounds, effects pedals and such the line 6 is awesome,it gives you so many options in sounds in a really affordable price, while the quality isn't the best it doesn't change the fact that you have unlimited options with it,it is just great for experimenting and all.
No, Its not that, I own A Spider IV, 75 Watt, 1 x 12, and the $99.00 Spider practice Amp. 1 x 8, Both Are good Amps, and they do what they do, but these New Modeling Amps, I have neither the patience or time to sit down and build parameters and edits and download Green days Live sound or the Tragically Hip amp settings from the song 38 Yrs Old. You Get The Point ? Working 50 hrs. a week, and trying to practice and live a full life takes ALL my time, besides sitting in front of a Amp all day or night, I Have done both.
On a serious note, Line 6, stop. You realize that it's getting much cheaper and accessible to get a tiny preamp and plug into your laptop to get stock DAW plugins that sound better and are much more controllable than your spiders right?
Not all that impressed. the distorted tone still sounds like a fart, though I do like the addition of the wireless bit. I think I'll be sticking to my Mustang V v.2 for now, until I have the money to buy a real amp that is. One day, 6505...
This amp sounds like history is repeating itself. Amps like the Peavey Vypyr are just so vastly superior to this crap. The priorities Line 6 had when designing this amp seem to defy common sense. If they've failed at designing an amp modeler to have more accurate amp models, then they've got bigger problems to solve than than allowing you to max out the gain on the insane channel using an iphone. Being able to max the gain and scoop the mids with my phone fixes a problem that never existed for anyone. Why did simply adjusting the amp's controls at the amp ever need reinventing? But I suppose 'better amp models' isn't as marketable on the amp's box than stating that you can adjust the amount of angry bees coming out the amp without even needing to unglue your eyes from Pokemon Go. It's difficult not to be cynical when a product like this is such a disappointment. And it genuinely annoys me that even if the product is shit, Line 6 will still sell millions of these to kids that don't know any better.
Both actually... But to argue your comment. You haven't seen, heard, or played the amp first hand and are basing your opinion on a compressed audio youtube product demo, and whatever experiences you've had with it's 6+ year old predecessors. If you took a moment to go to a music store and try it out first or even go to their website you'd see they did improve the amp models, effects, and cab models. The phone interface is just so you can see/adjust everything at once vs scrolling through the LCD one at a time on the amp. You can have your opinion but it should be based on first hand facts... don't be the guy that reviews shit on amazon before the product has been released, or the guy that gives a product 1 star cause UPS fucked it up in transit.
***** I don't really think anyone's cynicism for this product is at fault considering the embarrassing messages it gives off when a company as big as Line 6 miserably fails to make their own product sound any good. It's entirely the responsibility of their marketing department to promote the product at nothing less than the highest standard. Making it sound as shitty as it did is completely inexcusable and it is not the fault of anyone but Line 6 themselves for people to assume that the product is a bag of shit. Just because youtube compresses the audio files isn't much of an excuse either; there are plenty of other modelling amps that use the same media yet despite the audio quality limitations of TH-cam, they still sound a thousand times better than the Spider. "The phone interface is just so you can see/adjust everything at once vs scrolling through the LCD one at a time on the amp." Big whoop. That's a pretty weak justification. Even if it is easier to look at all the settings all at once, was looking at all the settings one at a time through the LCD really that much of a problem? No. It's primary purpose is as a marketing gimmick made to appeal to the current generation of kids that find their iphone more interesting than life itself. So they simply put 2 and 2 together.
I've already heard the amp side by side with the Spider IV, so I have my opinions of it. Just saying, to go listen to it for yourself. Line 6 spent a lot of time on the Helix which is my guess for Spider going to the back burner for the last 6 years, but the improvements they made on it since the IV are noticeably better. Can't say why that doesn't translate in this video, but the amps models do sound better. Had to roll back the highs just a tad due to it being full range, perhaps they didn't take that into account when mixing the video??? No idea. But to say the Peavey is better is a stretch. The last good amp they made was the 5150, and go watch that "undercover boss" episode on Peavey, wouldn't support that company after they screwed their employees like that.
I just listened to this amp on the Line 6 homepage and it sounds like ass. This demo is a bit better, but not by a whole lot. I guess for the money it's something(?) of a decent box. It just sounds like rehashed Vetta and POD amps. So L6 is just regurgitating old software and milking it for more cash.
ShaDows Cradle I don't think it sounds spectacular. But it sounds good. You can't really hear dynamics over youtubes shitty audio compression anyway. So I want to play one in person to feel and hear the response curves.
Oooookay.... The first 20 seconds sounds like a shit. JCM800? rly? Come ooon. What the fuck is going on with low frequencies? It's fucking clipping! Clean? Oh, yeah. Mid's for suckers! Just turn up the high's.. There is only one nice feature - simple wireless connection.
Heads up! Glenn is probably already making a video. and for you drummers 'V' mean 5. that's 1 2 3 and 2 more...
can't wait to see it, I hope he tears it a new one
Blind test in a local shop proved that the sounds are good if people remove their bias. Most couldn't tell many of the amps apart and the Line 6's tube sounds were impressive. Haven't played one yet but I agree. I LOL at these "these amps suck, I'm going to keep my 1967 Marshall 100W plexi...it's got tubes", comments. They sound like total dumb asses.
That's sounds about as stupid as the "I like the ESP but I'll keep my '59 all original Les Paul" 😆
No one cares what equipment you have. The audience won't give a damn only other douche bag guitar players will. A good guitar and amp just make a crappy guitarist sound louder.
People need to stop knocking on beginners and sold state amps. No one cares but them.
Ryley Gallwey fizzy as fuck
Because it sounds like fried assholes.
Ryley Gallwey I agree it's not terrible. That being said, it's nowhere near as good as Marshall
the spider line of amps inspired me to work real hard to save up enough to buy a tube amp
tube amps are a pain in the ass and dont always sound better
The sound processing sounds a lot more refined over the older spiders. I don't regret buying my Spider. Next time make LCD even smaller. Just 1 line.
how about one pixel that blinks in Morse code
Not even that beauty can't save the sound. Love the ESP.
Hmm. line 6 finally woke up and smelled the coffee, and updated their Spider line. About time!
Though, I'm very very happy with my Marshall Code 50.
Go with classic speaker setting. Makes a world of difference with these.
spider 5 is just a 4 with a firehawk face with wireless and usb recording. demo done.
Is it possible to connect my MAC to this Amp and run BIAS FX with no problem?
tested one at guitar center. actually a very cool amp.
Im getting a 240 combo been playing these amps in gigs for 15 years they sound great - all styles - while all the old school guys lug around all there crap thats heavy and buzzes I just plug & play
Will the relay charge while the amplifier is powered off?
Since people say the built in distortion sound bad, can you use a distortion pedal to get a better tone with this amp?
For the price this is the best option you cant expect jcm 800 or a dual rectifier tone for the price like that, you can always get shit like bias but well you have to buy a high quality interface with it and i dont like to open my daw, interface and pc everytime, sometimes i just want to plug in and play.
What happened with the FB xpress pedal? !!!!!!
Dear Santa, I want this... Thanks! :)
The cleans were okay but the distortion was bad in my opinion.
yeah... is a little bit "forced" maybe bad eq
It is always like that with line6 :-( but I somehow managed to save it just a tiny little bit, check it out on my channel if you want.
AZERDOK Norris definitely bad EQ. If you're willing to tweak, then it's the practice amp that you need.
But how is the sound stereo when there's only one main speaker?
Birdy Wings maybe it's only stereo if you plug into an extension cab or something.
***** Well I don't see one in this video...
Birdy Wings the biggest model is 2x12
MegaHungray It isn't the one shown is this video, is it?
Why don't have the variax plug?
i just bought one a couple of days ago
Well looks better than the other series but i cant say much about the sound i need to try one
does it have a noise gate? and what metal settings are programmed?
Can you do a pass thru? meaning bypass everything except for the power amp and full range speaker to be able to use it with a preamp?
Jo's Stuff that'd be siiick! I hope it does that.
Is it possible to bypass all amp models and use only effects?
If I were looking into a Spider V 30 or Amplifi 75 for about the same price as a practice amp, what would you recommend?
i'd look at an id core hahaha
Maybe is the microphone?
The proofs in the pudding haha
Here's hoping Line 6 have realized that the fender super champ X, the blackstar TVP and the marshal code amps are kicking their ass at their own game and are stepping it up in sound quality from the previous spiders. The DT50 has good tone, but that's the only Line 6 amp I've ever heard that does (I have not heard the spider valve, but I've heard every other spider amp as well as the vetta and flextone)
Seriously. The Marshall Code? It's so dark and muddy it hurts. I'd even take a Spider 3 over a Marshall Solid State any day of the week.

Marshall code 50 is a total disaster - the 25 sound ok though. They really screwed up the code 50.
I play into a direct box on stage. Can I kill the speakers? It's a small auditorium and the sound guys get real testy when my speaker is bouncing off the back wall.
There is headphone output on the amp that I'm sure works for line use.
So does the "60" come with the wireless Jack thing?
The 60 has a wireless receiver built in, but the transmitter is separate.
*****
Oh, So I'll still have to buy that...
It would have been better if it was included.
If it was included the amp would cost more, which forces the people who don't want it to pay more money for something they're not going to use.
Makes more sense to keep the price lower, and make the transmitter available for the people who want it.
What's the wireless system you are using?
its built in, and you only have to buy the transmitter
I mean, you can dial in some really good tones with a Spider amp. However, I think Line 6 would be doing themselves a favor if they dropped the "Spider" name.
WOW - All the bad comments
All well deserved..
Chad Boston Yes, interesting why they cared enough to come trash the product! LMAO.
Aimes I have one it's great 👍🏻
I'll blame the mid-scoped, fizzy, over compressed sound on TH-cam compression and reserve judgement until I hear one in person. Oh my god, the bullshit he had to go through to change the delay setting, I think I'll still be keeping my pedal board for a while yet.
There is an editor app for iOS and Android you can use to set the parameters for the entire signal chain.
Imagine doing that on stage. Playing with your phone with one hand and and tapping notes with the other. Much easier to reach back/down and twist a dedicated knob a little bit.
Why would you do that on stage tho? Just save the presets you made on your phone to your amp and switch with a foot controller
E RamCrom Are you really asking why would someone want to change a setting on stage?
I've had the spider2 for a long time. It has served its purpose but I find the distortion tones to be anemic compared to a lot of amps out there. It sounds like they didn't improve it on this one.

that's way too much button pressing for my taste. I love the spider amps that came before this model
god those sub frequencies are way too strong

The guitar is not even connected to the amp?
Birdy Wings it is. Wireless
have you ever heard of wireless . 5:06
oh cool, didn't watch the entire thing
Soundwise it does not appear to be an upgrade to the IV.
I prefer the Fender Mustang Modeling Amps..

Mesa Dual Rec over here!
Does anyone know what model ESP he is playing? thanks
The proof is in the cocked Wah sound.

tones need to be more clearer to much static my Marshall vs 100 valve state burys it
For the money you'd pay for this thing, you're better off buying a Fender Mustang 3.
Get the Mk II
In my opinion, the EQ on these amps aren't that responsive
Why the hell would you mic up a full range speaker? These have XLR outputs for a reason. Micing a full range speaker is going to convince people the tone is shittier than it actually is. What you're doing here is micing an already "mic'd" sound. You aren't doing the cabinet model or mic models any justice at all.
I can't help but imagine how the comments would differ if the signal was actually routed properly.
dID YOU GUYS AT LEAST FIX IT SO THAT WHENEVER I TOUCH A KNOB (OR GOD FORBID SWAP CHANNELS) THE AMP DOESNT FREAK OUT BY GOING 20dB HIGHER WITH THE FLANGE SET TO MAX?
what's with the spider 5 10,000 dial in knobs and presets.. Total hot mess.. pass on this.
everyone disses line 6 amps and I don't see why they sound great
NO MIDS! ALL THE GAIN!
He is not dialing that tone in well at all. Go on the insanse channel and max your gain. We want to know if it Djents.
It'd be a cool amp for a beginner...which is what audience this is targeted for.
intermediate players that are poor and can't afford a Marshall
Tom F Park This amp is for seasoned professionals, which is why they won't sell YOU one..... dummy
Blue? you meant to say purple fam lol
is that a Variax Geech by chance?
I never liked line 6 the tone is dry and sounds too fake
As a line 6 owner I must say,if you are chasing a good guitar tone......never buy a line6,there are better options out there, but if you want to play around with sounds, effects pedals and such the line 6 is awesome,it gives you so many options in sounds in a really affordable price, while the quality isn't the best it doesn't change the fact that you have unlimited options with it,it is just great for experimenting and all.
george kasiouras agreed. I would consider it a practice and inspiration amp
Boss Katana sounds better!
Press this, edit that , parameters ? F@$ck that, I'm old school ! 6 knobs are all u need.
So you hate all the new amps?
No, Its not that, I own A Spider IV, 75 Watt, 1 x 12, and the $99.00 Spider practice Amp. 1 x 8, Both Are good Amps, and they do what they do, but these New Modeling Amps, I have neither the patience or time to sit down and build parameters and edits and download Green days Live sound or the Tragically Hip amp settings from the song 38 Yrs Old. You Get The Point ? Working 50 hrs. a week, and trying to practice and live a full life takes ALL my time, besides sitting in front of a Amp all day or night, I Have done both.
ken rogers But there's a lot of presets built in, which can be accessed by twisting one knob,
Better than the 2, but still FAR from a good tone. Too harsh with numb dynamics. Sorry, I'll stick with my Carvin X-100 combo.
oh fuck me the shittiest amp series in the history of amps
On a serious note, Line 6, stop. You realize that it's getting much cheaper and accessible to get a tiny preamp and plug into your laptop to get stock DAW plugins that sound better and are much more controllable than your spiders right?
All the amp models sound the same
Not all that impressed. the distorted tone still sounds like a fart, though I do like the addition of the wireless bit. I think I'll be sticking to my Mustang V v.2 for now, until I have the money to buy a real amp that is.
One day, 6505...
Plz remove mic from front
I bet in 6 months they issue something better...it's a marketing trick
And it genuinely annoys me that even if the product is shit, Line 6 will still sell millions of these to kids that don't know any better.
you posted the same shit on the other video... douche!
***** Do you actually have an argument against what I posted or are you just going to state a worthless observation?
"The phone interface is just so you can see/adjust everything at once vs scrolling through the LCD one at a time on the amp."
Big whoop.
Wow it actually got worse
You know its crap when all he can say about each tone is "Not too bad" lolol
when people got time to pass by and watch ,comment how line 6 sounds awful blablablaBLA...... #Secret desire that they can Never Admit
WTF happened to your ears man???
Did someone shoot your ear lobes?
Do you want to be that guy who owns and uses a line 6 spider? AKA Loser
People judge you while you're playing in your bedroom?
used to have this amp.. sounds horrible
What guitar model is that? Esp custom shop?
