  • exposing my Fulbright ETA stipend and how much it costs to live in Taiwan as an expat abroad teaching english. **ALL NUMBERS SUBJECT TO CHANGE **

    Because a Fulbright scholarship is technically not service work, they won't disrespect you with a "service work" paycheck. Fulbright usually respects you with somewhere around the (lowest) average salary for workers in your placement site-- for Taiwan that meant twice the minimum wage. So google that, and you could probably estimate how much your stipend would be. But remember, every Fulbright site has their own secret sauce, so this might not be as copy and paste as it sounds.
    These are the numbers from 2018, so they'll fluctuate based off inflation, changes to cost of living, sales at the bubble tea shop, you name it!
    Right, also, I should legally protect myself 😅

    *some perspective from my friend currently living in Taipei* Ok full disclosure. First I was like “god dayum, well that’s a scandalous clickbait title.” Then I was uncontrollably laughing. Then you said you pay $2,000 on food per month, with western food treats counted, and I literally dropped my phone, walked away, looked in the mirror and said wtf is wrong w me 🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😂💀💀💀🥺 my food budget is ~6,700 😭😭😭😭😏😏😏😏
    So, probably just double or triple the entire estimate of everything because it's clear I spent 10 years of my youth in Port St. Lucie, FL with no friends and a Jamaican mother who always said "there's food at home"

    I’m planning to apply to an ETA in Taiwan for 2022 and this channel has been INCREDIBLE!!! Seriously it is everything!! You are so entertaining, well spoken, and informative. I have so many questions. Did you need to dip into your U.S savings/checking account at all or did you just use what you made from Fulbright?
    Also what were your biggest challenges when in Taiwan and what were the things you loved most?
    Will I survive if I don’t feel comfortable driving a scooter?
    What is some advice you’d give someone applying that you wish you knew before going to Taiwan?
    Not that I think I will need to/want to.. but can you leave the country of Taiwan at all during your contract?
    I know every case is different also! I mainly want to know your biggest takeaways and things you LOVED the most!! & if you recommend Taiwan specifically for a Fulbright (which I think you do!) Thank you so much if you even read this, I love you girl!!

    • @BRITTANYEDWARDS
      @BRITTANYEDWARDS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      YEEESSSS RILEEEYYYYY!!! I’m so here for this and all of the energy you’re bringing 😭 You are so kind 😩 and I love that you asked these here because I’m sure some other people might be wondering the same things!!
      *Did you need to dip into your U.S savings/checking account at all or did you just use what you made from Fulbright?*
      I do remember using some of my US money, but it was never because I didn’t have enough Taiwan money- it just happened sometimes if I was booking travel stuff. Like using Airbnb instead of Booking.com and mayyybeee I used it a little for booking international travel during the new year holiday. But I didn’t need to use my US money for e v e r y travel thing I booked, just a couple of times.
      *Also what were your biggest challenges when in Taiwan and what were the things you loved most?*
      This is SUCH a complicated question…. I would say biggest challenge ended up being how I was received as a black person (majority of the time it was ROYAL treatment, don’t get me wrong) sometimes kids were afraid of me, occaaaasssiionnnaalllyyy the slightest look of disgust from adult people, but mostly what got unbearable was the staring. OH MY GOSH THE STARING. And the picture taking.
      Things I love most would be the people, their hospitality, the sunsets, the beauty of the island, how affordable it is and accessible it is to travel. Like. When I was living there it felt that there was nothing that I could want that I couldn’t afford to do or had to think twice about. My wallet was my oyster and I didn’t necessarily grow up with such luxury.
      *Will I survive if I don’t feel comfortable driving a scooter?* definitely-but that also depends on your placement
      *What is some advice you’d give someone applying that you wish you knew before going to Taiwan?* Honestly, the biggest thing would be to remember that Fulbright, these scholarships, etc, they don’t define you. They don’t determine your worth or value as a human being. Ultimately it’s all about what is for you when is for you and if this is for you that would be wonderful! But if it’s not, that’s ok to, because there’s something perfectly aligned for you and your path and what’s in your best interest and I just can’t wait for you to stumble into it. Probably not what you were expecting 😂 but that’s something I really wish I kept in mind when I was going through the process
      *Not that I think I will need to/want to.. but can you leave the country of Taiwan at all during your contract?*
      T e c h n i c a l l y, yes, but not all willy nilly. You can only leave during the new year holiday which is about 2 weeks (and you have to get your travel approved) Other than that, the only flights you’ll be on are one to some of the auxiliary islands (like penghu, kinmen, etc)
      *I mainly want to know your biggest takeaways and things you LOVED the most!!*
      omg, uuummmmmmmmm golly. Well. I started thinking a little bit more critically about ethics and morals and HOOOWWWW Taiwan is so safe and how America even became what it is now (yikes). But also, living abroad makes you confront all of your own norms and ethnocentrism and soooooo that’s the kind of short answer. I also loved that all the fruits were SO SWEET and I chased the sunsets there more than I did anywhere else. Basically, I was living my best retired life (minus that whole 7:30-4 thing) and I was so here for all of it.
      *& if you recommend Taiwan specifically for a Fulbright (which I think you do!)*
      A B S O L U T E L Y

      @@BRITTANYEDWARDS Oh my gosshhhh THANK YOU. Thank you for being so thoughtful and thorough!!! I have really only travelled through my university funded research trips which I was very fortunate to do, so I do not want to fixate on the money because I know my experiences would be so important and invaluable.. but I want to make sure I am not in debt or anything upon return haha. I am so thankful for the reminder that a Fulbright grant is not the end all be all. It is just a possible piece, and whatever will be in my path will be. Everything happens for a reason & always works itself out. When applying a YEAR in advance, it is strange not knowing if I will get it or not for such a long time and I am such a planner, so I really need to work on letting that go! That is interesting to learn about your experience as a black woman. There is so much to reflect upon, grow, change, and act upon when it comes to the relationship so many countries have with POC. Ethnocentrism (reflecting on my own biases..we all have them even if we think we dont!..and my knowledge of others') is a major drive for me, along with my undergraduate research on creative movement pedagogy for teaching & learning English as a foreign language. I am SOOOO appreciative of you being so responsive and ngl I kinda feel starstruck you responded because I have binged your videos like crazy this past week lol. THANK YOU THANK YOU.

      @@rileylathrop905 wow, omg you're precious ✨ you definitely shouldn't be in debt, I had 4k USD at the end to buy some candy in the airport. It's a n n o y i n g not being able to fully plan things out because of their timeline, but i think a little chaos is good for the soul 😂 speaking of good for the soul, I can see where you're headed with that whole creative movement pedagogy thing, and I like it. I like it a lot.

    Thanks so much for all your videos!! They are so helpful- I am in the process of applying for Taiwan ETA for 2022 and was curious if you had any advice on which county/city I should put down. I know the western front is more urban and the east is more rural, but besides that, I don't know much and would love to know what you have to say about the different placement options.

    • @BRITTANYEDWARDS
      @BRITTANYEDWARDS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      awww yay this is so exciting!! honestly, it really depends on your lifestyle and the things that are important for you to feel at peace. What I did was type each place into google image search and browse the photos to see the vibes summary lolol. Little life hack. But besides that, I absolutely love Taichung. I love the east aesthetics, but I wouldn't trade it for the travel accessibility + convenience of the west (high speed train, access to major cities AND quieter nature spaces, etc.)

    $40,000 for a stipend sound like a reasonable amount. $18,000 for rent divided by 3 people is very affordable. I mean just slipping Bill's three ways is a great benefit. Taiwan sounds like the place I need to live lol. Thanks for the detailed breakdown.
