  • "Founded by Charles A. Miller in 1897, the Miller Gas Engine Company was located it Springfield, Ohio. Around 1901, the name was changed to the Miller Improved Gas Engine Company. Miller produced engines 35 hp to 400 hp in single, twin and four cylinder horizontal configurations. Miller's production ceased in 1939.
The largest of the Miller line, the 4 cylinder quad-opposed engine, was offered in horsepower ratings from 300 hp to 400 hp. An unusual feature is the "H" design with the flywheel between the engine frames. The engine features pressure balanced exhaust valves, a feature common to all Miller engines after 1903. Other interesting features include dual ignition and water cooled main bearings.
The engine was purchased in 1913 by the Northern Oil Company of DeYoung, Pennsylvania. Installed in the Spring Creek Compressor Plant near Kane, Pennsylvania, it was flat-belted to the large Ingersoll-Rand air compressor also located in the Lillibridge Stain building. The compressed air was used to operate steam engines and air heads to pump crude oil from wells on the lease. The engine operated until 1976; a total of 68 years of operation. It was removed by John Wilcox and Paul Harvey and brought to Coolspring the same year."
Note: this engine is owned and operated by the Coolspring Power Museum, and the above information was provided by them as well.
