- This gargantuan single cylinder engine is the largest known in the world, with a 21 inch bore x 30 inch stroke (displacing approximately 170 liters!). The information and introduction is given by Terry Smith, a longstanding member and tourguide of the Coolspring Power Museum.
Note: this engine is owned by Coolspring Power Museum, and permission was given to record and share Terry's exceptional knowledge.
It would be better if we could get a more detailed view of the engine, instead of just the narrator with the engine in the background.
That’s why you need to go see it for yourself. The displays are awesome.❤ I need to go back.
Yes quite agree , where is coolspring?
@@maly2ts408Coolspring is in western Pennsylvania, about halfway between Brookville and Punxsutawney!
I'll keep that in mind for the next show!
Yup lot better.
I did a little online research and quickly came to a dead end. I had to go check Crossley engines. The engine I thought of immediately turned out to be two cylinder horizontal with open crankcase, so it’s not a contender for biggest single cylinder, but with con rods 10 feet long and a estimated weight of 30 tons it’s a beast. Built in 1907. I cannot find what fuel it used, so I’m not even certain it’s a diesel. Last known to be in Argentina 15 years ago.
Check out Henry Ford about his nine single cylinder engines. This machine, 82 feet long, 46 feet wide, and weighing 750 tons, is one of nine that powered the Ford Motor Company's Highland Park plant while Model Ts were being manufactured there. Together, the nine machines generated 53,000 horsepower.
Engine actually starts at 16:40.
Yeah, he seems to like the sound of his own voice - a lot! 16 minutes worth! 😐
A Very Interesting Vidclip .... Just Such a Pity that the Audio is so Bad .... There should be 'Sub-Titles' sothat we could catch ALL the Info .... Thanks for Posting ....
I can not hear you with all that background noise. Thank you for your effort.
the de la vergne engine, single cylinder chips in at 330 litres,20,175 cubic inches still runs.IB
YES it has a 26inch bore and a 38 inch stroke. That should make it bigger.
Single cylinder Doxford J Engine that was (maybe still is?) at South Shields Marine and Tech back in the mid 80's absolutely dwarfed this engine.
Very nice
There are 2 much larger cylinder engines. They are Humphrey Pumps located at Cobdoglah in South Australia. They have bores of over 1 Meter and were used to pump water but are now on display.
There used to be some very big engines in the Ogema Hills near West Branch Michigan. They ran something related to the oil wells in the hills. I was 20 and climbed all over them so I believe they were bigger and they were spark ignition. It seems like they were Green and said AJAX on them. That was 50 yrs ago. ben/ michigan
Skip to 16 min mark
Just watch the whole video and learn something.
I don't want to spoil your day but there are engines in Blighty far bigger
I think the engines that used to drive the refrigeration pumps at Smithfield were bigger than that.
This engine has what is very close to an overhead camshaft.
16:33 for the engine starting.
Engine says, “shut up & start me!”
Slip the crap and go to 16.35
What is the fuel used?
Natural Gas
I would assume that the DeLaVergne engine at Rollag is the next biggest one…
It’s bigger, 26” bore 38” stroke
There are also some double acting Snow engines that are way bigger.
hi there real nice /john
Hmm not the largest in the world, only have to look at Kew's 90 inch and 100 inch single cylinder Cornish beams where the beam itself prob weighs more than that whole engine does and the cylinder itself housing the piston on either is much bigger than the whole engine.
I think, what you meant is a steam engine. This engine is gas/ natural gas or diesel powered.
Just skip to 16:40.
Make a good front wheel drive car😁
Or power my tricycle
Poor audio and video otherwise it would be extremely interesting
Imagine it in a Miata with a giant turbo
Look closely, the Miata is already under it...
Sparks, Yeah, the Mazda frame would drag on the road !
Fuel was natural gas
No !onoo
Narration is very good. The half wits that just want to hear it go pop pop pop (chug chug chug) would be happy watching a lawn mower. If you don’t want to hear the technical details just skip ahead.
Only suggestion is the camera could have focused in to the engine details a bit more.
By-the-way… additionally… the narrator is filling time while the technicians work on getting up and running.
That engine is not going to fit in my car.
Too much talking,
Too much talking. Nit enough engine....
