      Etive is a great place to explore whether or not you're into fishing. The upper loch is very peaceful except perhaps in mid-summer when you'll sometimes see a few other boats out.

      Thanks Andy - It certainly felt pretty chilly, although that's partly because I've not been out camping in the frost for a few months. Dipping your hands in the water to sort out anchors, bait and fish doesn't help either!

      I've no head for heights so I'll stick to sea level, or at least a trail of some sort! There's a lot of very small fish up towards the head of the loch, which is why I very rarely fish it - the novelty quickly wears off.

    • @Corkwing-DougK
      @Corkwing-DougK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha - I'd to look twice to get that reference. I make the Rev I M Jolly look positively cheerful though! I use a cheapo tabletop butane burner on the boat, and it doesn't take well to the cold. I've got plenty of propane mix canisters for the Jetboil, but they're not stable enough to use in a small, bouncy, cabin. I know Go Outdoors stock propane/butane mix for the tabletop so I guess a trip is on the cards fairly soon.

    • @ashleyhoward8926
      @ashleyhoward8926 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Corkwing-DougK At the risk or being boring, Butane liquefies at 0 centigrade, whereas propane is good down to -40, so go for it, even on Loch Etive in winter it should work!

    What do you do regarding your spare engine maintenance?

    • @Corkwing-DougK
      @Corkwing-DougK  13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Bryn, for routine maintenance on the main and spare I just DIY these days - the basic service is pretty straightforward (thanks to watching some other TH-cam videos). The main problem with outboards is probably lack of use really. My main engine averages around 35 hours a year, which is nothing at all compared to a car engine.
      Cheers, Doug

    Is the autumn and winter better for spurs in the loch or is it all year round . heading up in few hours

    • @Corkwing-DougK
      @Corkwing-DougK  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can vary a lot week to week, but spurs are there all year. Etive gets more attention over the winter mainly because other venues become more difficult to fish and it's fairly sheltered.

      Yeah - I'm being ungrateful really. The gear is actually pretty good at keeping me warm overnight these days, and I'm just being a wimp taking all the home comforts along in the boat! I got a down bag and a 4 season sleeping mat a few years ago and they make a huge difference - although down does demand some tender loving care in a marine environment. Hard to believe I've only been out on the boat once since this trip...

      Yummy bacon and egg roll on a frigid winter morning - or a parboiled dogfish? I'm afraid there really is no contest! A decent bacon roll is an essential of any camping trip unless you're going really roughing it and going ultralight. I definitely think you'd be outvoted on this one🙂

    What gives you the pleasure of catching fish for no reason

    • @Corkwing-DougK
      @Corkwing-DougK  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Oliver,
      An honest answer? - You suggest that I fish for no reason when the opposite is true, I fish as one way to retain my reason in an unreasonable world. My videos are really not about catching as many fish as I can, or about the technicalities involved, as these are not things which interest me much. Rather, I try to tell visual stories for others like myself, to show that it is still possible to experience wilderness even in a tiny overcrowded island like ours. Many of my viewers have to make great efforts to access places I can reach with relative ease and I am both delighted and proud if I encourage them to do so. Perhaps check out some of the comments others have made about some of these videos, as most understand that the context of my fishing matters as much as the actual catch. Angling does not define me but has certainly formed a core part of who I am for over half a century. I hope that will continue for a few years yet.
