  • This was just one of my highlights while I was in Greenland. I could not believe how amazing the ground looked under UV lights. Longwave light was MUCH better then Shortwave for finding sodalite.
    Now, I know you all are dying to know what I was doing over in Greenland, and I can't wait to tell you but you still have to wait just a bit longer!!!

    Hey, those are both longwave UV light. The one you refer as “shortwave” is a longwave 395nm uv, probably without a UV filter. The other one youre right it is longwave, but this one is 365nm + has UV filter lense. Shortwave UV lights are much more expensive and usually comes from a tube, not a LED. Just thought Id let you know!

      I was about to write the same the big one sure is 365nm UV filtered, the other one is even longer 395nm, the purple color is the key, lower you go less you see, the uv light it’s invisible to us, and more you go to the 400nm and more you see it as a deep violet, anyway 365nm it’s enough to find good fluorescent rocks ✌🏼

    Hello. Both lights are LW! The smaller one is probably unfiltered 395 or 400nm. The bigger light is a 365nm filtered LW light. It is one of the best lights out there. The SW flashlights are just around the corner. Thanks for a good video.

      Yep, you're correct. I couldn't read the big one, but it looked like the UV Beast 365nm and the other one just some regular as you said, unfiltered UV light 395 spectrum with lots of LEDs. Can't wait for larger head light with more power to come out!
      Skal!🍺

    @8:56 the one you said is light yellow is actually Scapolite. You actually found alot of Scapolite! You can see them when you rewatch your video towards the end where you laid them out on the rock. That red glow on your larger one there looks like it could be Calcite. Your thoughts?That mineral(Scapolite)can be found in Lapis Lazuli as well as FS Sodalite. Feldspar glows Blue, purple as well as Salmon or peach. Must've been a fun trip going to Greenland! My ancestors had a settlement there for about 300 years. I was told that alot of rock including FS Sodalite that is found in Canada actually came from Greenland via glaciers.
    I'm absolutely captivated by FS Sodalites and living on Lake Michigan, I hunt them every chance I get I'm out there getting these marvels! Nothing better in my opinion. Around here, the algae glows like a dull, red velvety color.

    She's not using a longwave, and shortwave light. Both lights she is using are longwave. The one light is a filtered C8 convoy 365nm light. The smaller light she is using is a 395nm unfiltered longwave light. Poor comparison when you aren't using what is stated.

    Is a longwave UV light the easiest way to differentiate between sodalite and lapis lazuli?

    • @ElleyKnowsRocks
      @ElleyKnowsRocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the sodalite is blue then yes a UV Longwave lite is a really good trick to be able to tell the difference between the two especially if your eye is not trained for it. Also taking a long way of UV light to places like gem shows and things like that can really help you tell the difference whether the rock is what someone says it is or if it’s not. :)

    • @attilathorbjornsson1519
      @attilathorbjornsson1519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @bcvids9 Lapis Lazuli from all the specimens I've seen have Scapolite in them (yellow glow) but can also contain FS Sodalite as well but regular Sodalite that looks like Lapis Lazuli, being Blue, won't flouresce, if that helps. 👍

      Oh that sucks!!! Short wave UV lights are good for some minerals but not most :(

    • @terrybadour7877
      @terrybadour7877 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The light you have is a longwave light. The problem is that it's the incorrect wavelength. The light you have is a 395nm light. You need a 365nm filtered light for hunting fluorescent minerals. The larger light she has is a filtered 365nm Convoy c8. That is the correct light. Where she is wrong is shortwave flashlights are in their infancy. Litterally just became available. You can't purchase them in stores. They are only being made by people in the fluorescent minerals trade. They are also pretty expensive. They are currently pretty dangerous. Goggles, and covered skin is necessary. Although you should always wear uv goggles with any UV light.
      Many good 365NM filtered lights are available you don't have to pay more than $50
