awesome science project!!!! one of my boys when they were very young did his science fair project on fluorescent/phosphorescent minerals etc.....of course me and his dad had PLENTY of rocks on hand so he got an "A"!!!! COOL!!!!
I live near the mine in Franklin N.J. that you mentioned. My husband and I went on the tour. They had what was called the rainbow room where the had lots of the fluorescent rocks turned the regular lights off in the room, put the black lights on and BAM! Glowing rocks everywhere... florescent, green, orange, yellow ect!! Absolutely amazing!!😄
My prized rock is a fluorite crystal structure atop a calcite layer. Northern Nevada has loads of fluorite and rocks that glow green, orange, yellow, and they hunt tungsten ore with the black light. So cool! You got a real nice collection! How about this, all moneys around the world have glowing money markers EXCEPT the U. S. DOLLAR.
My cousin did her science fair project on this subject back in 1998. They made a display box with rocks hot glued to the inside, you could go under the cape to see them glowing inside. (I did mine on a local mound building tribe and got 3rd place, I collected artifacts and had them tested at the local university. ) Loved this video bringing back good memories!
I've been collecting rocks and crystals for 20 years, I had no idea that some of them glow under UV light!! You've given me an exciting opportunity to go through my collection again, thank you!
Hello ellen..i'm from phillipines and i have one.. no uv light needed, it glow in the dark places.. pm me if you are interested and i'll send you videos..
WHAAAAATTTTTT! 🤩🤯these are incredible! I think I just found my next obsession on my list, amethysts, yooperlites and any thing else that is fluorescent! Thank you for an awesome video, stay safe and can’t wait to see your next adventure. ❤️ a 🇨🇦 fan
The petroleum associated with Herkimer "diamonds" is known as anthroxolite. It is a solid hydrocarbon which is sometimes associated with very ancient stromatolites.
I have a few herks that do the uv reaction. They mainly exist within the little falls district from what I heard and personally mined. The petroleum deposits are clear. And looks like super minuature seed crystal inclusions. Barely noticeable until uv is put on it.
As always, another great video. I collect minerals in my spare time. I wish i could do it for a living, like you. You are living the dream for all of us!
I love seeing the different colours they go to under different lights Bryan, the way they glow is beautiful. I can imagine children being as fascinated as I am by the length of time it takes for the fluorescence to dissipate. Mind you I would be nervous about using the lights you need to see the gorgeous colours, and the black one with the white chains on it is so lovely and its unusual for me to pick something out that isn't purple, pink or blue lol. I look forward to seeing what you have to show us next, take care and stay safe please my friends, love to Matrix (and look forward to seeing his new hair cut lol). Mary-Ellen UK
Oh my goodness, that hyalite opal is beautiful! That's it! I just made my first purchase form Ultrarocks, a gift for my mother. She has a whole cabinet of stuff that glows, started out with "petroleum glass" then added a few other things that glow. AND...my grandmother's name was "Opal" so that stone has always been special to us. So now my mother will have an "opal" (for her birthday) that glows. What a fun video, too--I tagged my son and his wife, I thought maybe the three kids would enjoy it (since they're bouncing off the walls because of the quarantine) Thanks Brian!
Omgosh you have one of the most beautiful minerals and crystals an gems collection I’ve ever seen in my life. Beautiful all of them. Thank you for sharing.
Seeing the Franklinite reminds me of when I was about 7 years old & my mom took me to the science center in the Watchung mountains. I was mesmerized by the display of fluorescent minerals from NJ and have been a rock-hound ever since. Thank you for bringing back one of my most treasured memories of mom & me.
Amazing---I just got my hyalite opal today, that's only three days, I'm totally impressed with the service, Brian! And the little bonus was nothing to sneeze at either, I might say--it's now proudly displayed on my "amazing minerals" shelf. The glowing crystals are for my Mom's birthday, and they're perfect little crystals, I know she's going to love it. This is my first order from Ultrarocks, and I'd definitely recommend it based on the fast service, the carefulness in packing the delicate crystal, and thoughtfulness of including a little "thank you!". Big thumbs-up! And hugs to Matrix from all of us!
I discovered a few yrs ago by accident that a few of my rocks glow. One in particular glows like a Kryptonite green color very intense glow. Thank you for sharing your gems and rocks in your video. I am a serious rock collector and this Summer if this Corona virus thing let's ppl come out of their houses I'm going to go to Idaho and fig for star garnets I can't wait!!!
I love franking mine I frequent it a few times a year. Always a good time going through the pilings. And I noticed a few of my herkimers glow as well but under story wave, I get a slight bluish glow
I did that too I got a black light flashlight then a bigger fixture. I went around all my rocks and gathered up a little rock rave light show. Its been a slow year so we find our fun. Nice job thanks for sharing !😄
I love all the stuff that's glowing on your table. But my most favorite is of course the Ruby's. My birthday was July. I'm a Ruby's best friend 😆 lol. I had to sell my Ruby rings 💍 because I can't wear them any more. Would love to get some good Ruby's for a necklace or earrings. I love looking at all that green glowing stuff you sead you can't get anymore. The rock's from Michigan are really awesome too. Thanks again for sharing your amazing adventures and finds ❤ 😀
Love your name for the color of fluorite- "blurple"! 😂 The name of the 2nd coral fossil is Chain Coral. We find those all over the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
@@TheCrystalCollector can't agree with this post enought. That light changed my mineral collection and collecting fascinations in an amazing new direction and it is all thanks to that C8+. It's hard to say enough good things about that light.
Effin awesome !! I have a whole bunch of necklaces and wanted to see which ones would glow in black light. I found out more about semi precious stones than I needed to. Great stuff, Always been interested in the scientific qualities of them. You made this fun!!
Glasses? Oooopsie! lol that Sterling Hill NJ piece is calcite/willemite...that's what I think that cinder block I found in my last video is made out of...
I have a couple of magnificent flourite crystals on calcite that glow blueish purple and when the light turns off it glows , so amazing ! My prize piece
Great examples of fluorescent minerals! I live in an area of the desert in California where rare fluorescent minerals are abundant. Tufa and Hanksite (a salt mineral) are both highly reactive to UV light.
Love the N.C. native hyalite opals ... all the N.C. native crystals... I have been sunstone gathering all around Statesville NC... they are my latest finds rockhounding...
That quartz reacts in exactly the same way as some fluorescent flint/chert that I found in my back garden. Those varieties or orange/pale pink, pale green tinted yellow etc. After some research and some testing I found the presence of calcium carbonate in those samples. Also chalcedony is a type of quartz that is known to produce oranges in particular. With the flint/chert I know the geology allows for limestone and organic/fossil inclusions which could be responsible for different fluorescent colours. Another reference which backs this up is Karst which is exactly the minerals I identified.
One of the first things I do with stones I buy or find is shine a UV light on them. I’ve been surprised at times by what I’ll see with found stones or stones in unidentified grab bags. Note though that organic material can fluoresce also so those tiny little specks you’ll often see are most likely dust (skin cells, hair, etc.) not a mineral. Don’t shine the light around your house unless you are a confident housekeeper. 😉
The coral fossil that you weren't too sure about is a chain coral fossil (next to the Petosky stone). I have a "ruby" I want to check as well as many other gemstones that I want to identify. This may help since there are a limited number of stone that fluoresce. I should also check the 3 type of calcite I have (orange, coral, and dragon's blood) and see what, if anything, they do. Nice collection Bryan!
This in my new favorite video! I have a ton of ideas now, if only I can source some of these stone at a fair price. I'd absolutely love some resources to make purchases of these, even for large volume purchase resources. I will check out your ebay page ASAP! I love crystal gemstones - my name is Crystal, after all! Thanks for sharing these beauties! Cheers!

Hi! My daughter and I really enjoyed your video! My daughter is working on a school science project. She chose to do it on rocks and minerals that glow under a uv light. She is fascinated with minerals! Can you recommend somewhere I can purchase these kinds of stones for her science project? Thank you! We loved the “blurple fluorite”! 😂👌🏼
Wow, you found those in North Carolina 0:50 I wonder if I can get close to the quarry and get some… I live in North Carolina, and started finding tons of artifacts, bird, effigies… And I started finding photorealistic portraits of humans on rocks! I know it sounds freaking nuts. I bought a 365 nm UV c8 light to try to find interesting artifacts made of these stones. I thought it may help me find the paint that’s on some of these white pieces of quartz… But it does not. Do you know one that would? I think mine only does one of the waves either short or long… I was kind of disappointed when all I could pick up with all the dust on my artifacts.
Hey there, thanks for sharing! Going to do this in the beaches where I live and when I’m gold prospecting, not for gold of course just the cool rocks along the way. What wavelength are the lights you’re using? I was thinking of picking up a 365nm, is that better than 395? Thank you very much
What’s up my man! Love the knowledge on which minerals are fluorescent! I was curious what wave length that little guy is that you’re using and what brand that was. I use my 365 uv beast and am wondering if this little guy is like a small 250nm or just a regular 395

Awesome video! You forgot to add in septarian nodules! They glow an amazing yellow under SW! ❤
So what is the benifit of these rocks as long as you need a UV light to see these colours?
It’s just really cool to see the light up when you shine a light on them
I would like to make a small terrarium to use as a night light using the calcite clams I dug in Florida. Can you tell me the best UV light to use?
I’m not sure how or UV light would work in a terrarium, not sure how it would do only plants and stuff but what you would want is a long wave
Calcite is often found with quartz so that is most likely why the quartz was glowing
Thats cool !So under blacklights do they glow
