I got this, Herzog Zwei and Earthworm Jim for $2 each a few years back at Goodwill. Probably the last time I saw 16-bit non-sports games at a thrift store
While we're on the subject of submarines, how about a review of seaQuest DSV for Genesis? Lots more action that plays like Desert Strike underwater, far less technical stuff, and a talking dolphin that...doesn't actually talk in the game. But it's still challenging good fun!
This was the first game i got with my genesis. I loved it and played it all the time and even completed it. I remember the last levels being really tricky. Thanks for reviewing 688 Attack Sub and bringing back good memories !!
Loved this sim. Used to fire the cruise missiles into the NW USSR (if memory serves) and then find deep water, park on the deepest bottom it would let me and then go to the store to get beer. By the time I come back, the surface chaos has abated and I could sneak out and on to the next mission. Good times.
Very hard simulation, it will take a while for the player to get the hang of it. Playing with Russians I got the Red October feeling :) and American missions are tough, both sides have very hard missions because hey, this is a real deal submarine simulation, and you are not assigned to only one post in the submarine, you gotta control all of them, which only makes things harder.
Those have to be the slowest torpedoes in the world. But, yeah, if you must play a submarine game then may be try Silent Service. As long as that is the WW2 NES sub game.
Time does go by. I remember seeing this on my tv set as a kid in a basement in DC.. no such thing or even entered your mind about Internet, cell phones etc..
I played the shit out of this back in the day, There was a mission that had you running a deep sea trench much like in hunt for red october, at the time the wire frame sea bed looked amazing. LHX attack chopper was also a good game for the time.
Looks very complicated. Back then it must have been hard to program it and count all the movement and rendering the position of the ships (while moving or sinking and all the stuff).
i've had this game in my collection since i was younger but never knew how to play it...from lookin at it now, it still looks like it takes time to get used to it
you know Mark with your voice you could own in the podcasting world, your voice is more soothing and wonderful to listen to than Leo Laporte - I could foresee an entire entourage, Karnage Productions....all gaming, both pc and console, tons of podcasts...would be HUGE!
This game got released when EA(Electronic Arts) started porting a lot of pc games such as Populous, Madden series, and Abrams Battle Tank. Wow has time flown!
I had this on the megadrive when i was about 10, completely forgot about it. Cheers for uploading this. I don't think i enjoyed the game that much at the time though.
I must be living in an alternate reality, because I'm more familiar with the English version of "99 Red Balloons" playing on the radio more than the German version. Either that, or somebody else's reality is crashing into ours.
I actually loved this game. but I love strategy games. I had Master of Monsters and Centurion of Rome. before someone stole them all when they broke into our apartment
Damn, now I want to play 688(i) again...Or Silent Service on the Atari ST. I think you'd like Silent Service more, Mark. You have artillery bolted to your sub, so you can drive around on the surface and shoot at stuff.
@@xman777b Wow, time flies. I haven't seen a CGR video in ages. Hope he's still doing stuff he loves! Good memories. I guess it depends on which version Silent Service we're talking about? - You're probably asking about the NES version of S.S. which I don't have any experience with. I'd say it's pretty close to Silent Service 2 ( PC ) in terms of graphics. Both have you jumping station to station essentially doing all the roles. The Genesis version of 688 will usually pit you in missions that last between 10 mins to 60 mins. I think there was about 10 different scenarios many of which you could opt to play either as the American 688, or the Russian Alfa so you could experience the missions from both sides - so there's a good amount of content to mess around with. Submarine simulations are not very common and even less so on consoles. As far as console options go I'd probably have to say that 688 is probably the best console submarine simulator that I know off. On PC you have more options, but it's still a rare genre. Right now I'd maybe suggest checking out UBOAT, or maybe Cold Waters if you want something more modern.
@@DEFkon001 wow. Thank you for your very detailed response. I was kinda referring to Silent Service on C64. Have a friend who treasured his gameplay on that particular title. It sounds like 688 trumps that game? Thank you for your thoughtful input. Take good care. Vinny
...wait... I don't remember that the genesis has a mouse courser? ...so... if you play with a genesis controller... is it going to look like a mouse courser?
Did Mark say "Most things in here don't react well to MULLETS"?, that is what it sounded like. I know they said bullets in Hunt For Red October. Most things and people for that matter don't react well to mullets. Mullets are enough to start an international incident on their own. XD
@@SubidubidubiDu1 it's a reference to a comment made by the first officer of the defecting submarine USSR Red October from the movie The Hunt For Red October. Were you perhaps winding up to berate him for sexism?
@Skyrift He could sell DVD's of his videos and consider it a donation. To save money and make it more like a donation, he could burn them as .avi or whatever to a $0.25 DVD and mail it for $1 +$1 envelope, for $2.25 he could sell it for $5 and double his money. Of course you can use ConvertXtoDVD to make the videos into DVD Format, but IMO it wastes a lot of space, I prefer more eps per disc, not more discs with less eps.
"We hit a friendly sir!"
"I don't think they're friendly anymore!"
lmao
I got this, Herzog Zwei and Earthworm Jim for $2 each a few years back at Goodwill. Probably the last time I saw 16-bit non-sports games at a thrift store
"We just hit a friendly sir" Yeah but I don't think they're friendly anymore..
Superb!

It plays like an old PC game because it is an old PC game. Spent many hours on my uncle's 386 pc playing it. Love this game.

I really loved this on my first PCXT computer back in the day.
I I'll have to keep an eye out for it.
Those have to be the slowest torpedoes in the world. But, yeah, if you must play a submarine game then may be try Silent Service. As long as that is the WW2 NES sub game.
This game would be like comfort food. Solid, comprehensive gaming, that takes you back to a simpler time.
Reviews from the past, I like these :)
LOL! "Dancing with the pause button on" Brilliant!
1:40 you play as Commander Marco Chuck E. Cheesonovich?

Congrats on 3k vids! :D
I never knew this was on consoles, I remember my dad had this for DOS back in the day.
"It's like they are dancing with the pause button on..." HA! I so want to hang out with this guy, play/talk video games with him and talk film theory.
I remember really liking this game. You have to sit around play by yourself and enjoy the strategy.
used to play this over and over again
I like how you went back to the old intro
Forget about the music, noticed the voice on this game is pretty clear where everyone complain about genesis scratchy voice :)
@n00berania: Nothing specifically like that, but on the Undertow channel, there's a meet and greet with the CGR:U team.
haha mark you make everything looks so awesome!
If you have General Chaos do a review of it, me and a freind used to play that for hours back in the day.
Looks very complicated. Back then it must have been hard to program it and count all the movement and rendering the position of the ships (while moving or sinking and all the stuff).

@Skyrift: I think THIS is his living. The money comes from the sales of the DVD. And buying games from EBay links on the CGR site.
you know Mark with your voice you could own in the podcasting world, your voice is more soothing and wonderful to listen to than Leo Laporte - I could foresee an entire entourage, Karnage Productions....all gaming, both pc and console, tons of podcasts...would be HUGE!
Mark makes the best stock music ever.
Like seriously I wish It would play everywhere I go.

Don't forget starlight, Thats the best of them all.

" its like their dancing with the pause button on" BRILLIANT!
awesome review. laughed my ass of from start to finish :)
Funny review. Thanks for review
It'll be like a little surprise for the crew.
@sonicblast2404 im talking about his grammar, its called "Atari" also, it wasnt atari 1700, it was atari 2600
This game looks so cool!
May I suggest Silent Service for the NES? Very similar game.
I must be living in an alternate reality, because I'm more familiar with the English version of "99 Red Balloons" playing on the radio more than the German version. Either that, or somebody else's reality is crashing into ours.
I was gonna send him this game, good thing I realised he already reviewed it.
"Look how happy everyone is!! it's like they're dancing.. with the pause button on...."
I actually loved this game. but I love strategy games. I had Master of Monsters and Centurion of Rome. before someone stole them all when they broke into our apartment
I had this on pc. One time my brother and I hooked up two computers so we squared of against each other in the depths.
AHHHHH!!!! my spleen just burst from that "music"!!!
688 attack sub. FLOATING IN THE SUMMER SKY!!!
Is there like a mouse controller for the Genesis?
@UrbanCatapult i dont know how you are feeling, but the only way TH-cam would be slow if you have 2 kbps or use a commodore 64
Loved this game
Not exactly Silent Hunter III in complexity is it?
Damn, now I want to play 688(i) again...Or Silent Service on the Atari ST.
I think you'd like Silent Service more, Mark. You have artillery bolted to your sub, so you can drive around on the surface and shoot at stuff.
That's also on the nes and it actually has better graphics than this( fire rising up from torpedoed ships) but not sound.
I loved this game back in the day. Course I grew up playing Silent Service, and Gato. lol.
how does this compare with Silent Service?
@@xman777b Wow, time flies. I haven't seen a CGR video in ages. Hope he's still doing stuff he loves! Good memories.

This was one of the first games I played, after sonic of course... I actually enjoyed this game, it really is quite fun! :D
"Everyone sing the national anthem!"
"NO, PLAY EDIT STATION 1'S SONG!"
3:45 gave me a chuckle.
@Skyrift i believe he is documentary produce/director/writer. look up his name on IMDB to see his credits.
THE MUSIC, OH THE HUMANITY!!!
You know, I have tested Silent Hunter 5 - aside of the modern graphics, this game still gives me the same nightmares as the other one...
@TheCommentGuy8 same thing with Dune 2 on genesis
and command & conquer on playstation... but the ps1 had a mouse, although I never had one
688! I had this for DOS.
I had this on my packed bell computer.
For vectrex?
I prefer 688 Hunter Killer for the PC :)
Amazing that games like this were made for 16bit consoles.
I remember playing this on my amiga 500 :-D
THIS IS A PC GAME!!!!!
I had this for PC back in the day....but I didn't know it was on Genesis too.
0:53 - THE BEER SONG FROM EDIT STATION 1!
sears used to have this in their genesis demo kiosks, for some unfathomable reason.
@sonicblast2404 atary?
So...do you have 688 Lives or 688 enemies?
"Oh no!, our cargo of betamax players is at the bottom of the sea!"
...wait... I don't remember that the genesis has a mouse courser? ...so... if you play with a genesis controller... is it going to look like a mouse courser?
It has flamethrowers?
You need to review Comix Zone

Please, the world needs a review of gunstar heroes, pleaseeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@natunn Eu acho que foi ele que fez :/
Mas posso estar errado, né?
awesome game, I have this one (:
Was probably quite good on PC, but the pace on Megadrive was glacial, very frustrating.
That music makes my everything hurt.
@totte95a Underwater flamethrowers.
Great Idea.
I used to love this game, but apparently I suppressed the memory of the victory theme....so....thanks?? :-p
can you cut people in half?
Hmm... I think I have this on a PC format... only it comes on two floppy-discs. X_X
Math Gran Prix reference: I'm a gamer, not a ******* submarine commander!
@Tayclamation ...What do ears have to do with reading comments?
Time to get a round American wife and drive state to state!
Haha cool comment, btw what did you mean by round? A plumpy/chubby girl or something? Oh yeah plumpies can be cute

who needs that when you can have BALL IN A CUP
4 people were aboard the betamax-player cargo ship.
@dotsonjb14 WHAT? I can't read you're comment because the isanely bad music made my ears explode.
@Skyrift I think that he earns a lot from Inecom Company :)
Why Mark! Why torture us with that music!
I really wish classic game room would review a monkey island game :D
if i was given this as a kid a would've been pissed
Am I the only one that never made it past the first screen of the game?
@MrSatchmo1 exactly.
I sold this w/ box and manual for something like 50 cents... prob should've kept it
@piketyl000 He can and Will and also how can You tell if its stupid have u played
