The most two footed player England has ever produced, maybe the world. Unbelievable technique, if he was French, Spanish, Brazilian, Italian or German he’d have played over 100 games for his country and been a truly world renowned talent. Unbelievable player
One of the few and original Flair Legends, he was like a perfect hybrid of Zidane in his Prime and David Silva. England have had a wealth of unbelievable Talent over the years and decades...Shame they haven't utilised them all to their max, imagine, Barnes, Waddle and Hoddle and Le Tissier, in a team, absolutely slaughter world forces, it's a shame man.
Agreed, lived in the UK from 1978 to 1992, Hoddle was the best and most skilled player, an absolute joy to watch especially in an era when most teams played hoof and chase. You would have sworn he was a Brazilian!!
Was a regular at WHL in the 70s and 80s and this vid just makes me cry for what weve lost. Yes we've seen prodigious talent since but none that have so suavely cajoled and danced and flicked and tricked and lobbed and made the ball explode into the net quite like GHodd.
one of the best players of all time! up there with the greats, born in the same town and watched him play for spurs, and i have never seen anyone play like him, watched him surrounded by players lift a ball perfectly and place it at the feet of another player across the pitch, the man had so much vision and skill it was incredible to watch, it felt as if he was an extension of the ball and he could will it wherever he wanted it to go.
What a player.. years ahead of his time. Platini said if he was french they would have built a team around him, but England were still in the era of huff and puff, long ball football and outdated old school managers.
Loved watching that Spurs team as a kid though I wasn't a fan, so many players who were easy on the eye...special mention to Micky Hazard too a lovely ball player unsung
He didnt need to be the quickest. His passing to players at distance or in tight situations was to the players feet. Why run fast down the pitch and then pass it if you have the talent to pass to feet anywhere on the pitch. How england never used him more is a complete mystery.Best player of his generation easily
04:45 - I was sitting directly behind the goal (spurs keeper end) and couldn't quite believe what I was seeing, as from the point of it leaving the keeper's hands the ball didn't touch the ground until it was in the other goal.
Two things to bear in mind: 1. English winter pitches were cabbage fields, not like the carpets of today. 2. In those days, cameras were only at 3 matches per weekend...imagine how many other moments of magic weren't captured on film?
Indeed. I remember a goal he scored at White Hart Lane from near the corner flag and I've been trying to find a video of it but no luck. Was never sure if he meant it or not.
Not only that, I would argue he'd be a starter in 82 coz he was better than Eder and Serginho. In 86 with Muller, Careca and Renato I believe he would be The 12th man
@@rauoool80s23 the 1970 no, individually as great as he was all 4 forwards in that side were better, hell they had guys on the bench like Paulo Cesar Caju, Edu and Dario that today would be starting for Brazil. Very deep squad and the most talented national team ever with a great build
I like it but Shilton would be nowhere near it, the guy cost us TWO World Cups. Banks all day long. I'm not sure about Edwards, we're only really going on reputation, which as we know, when someone dies young, they're usually hyped up to have been something they never really were. I'm not saying he wasn't as good as people say he was, but it'd be unfair to take him over players like Robson or Gerrard, IMO, who proved their worth over 10-15 years. RB is a tough one, I don't like to think that Neville was the best we've had in that position, but I'm struggling to think of an alternative. I seem to remember Des Walker playing RB a few times, if I'm correct, I'd have him in place of Neville. Kane would be a good shout, and Foden and Bellingham could eventually force their way in after a few more years of playing at the top level. I agree with most of that team, though, Barnes is such an underrated player for England.
This style of play is very very rare especially in 2024 you CANNOT find something like this anymore. Maybe Odegaard has the potential to reach this level cos he also uses the foot like a snooker cue stick.
bobby charlton levels of ambidexterity. should have been the first name on the team sheet of every single england game. what a waste of rare as they come talent.
Zidane before Zidane was a thing. Imagine his skills but on the football pitches of today rather than the ploughed fields of the 70s and 80s. Criminal that he only got 53 caps.
I agree with Charlie. Better than Gazza by a country mile. He had the same level ofskills, but passed the ball like Gazza never could...or never wanted to. Hoddle was the equal of Zidane with his 1st touch and gliding movement with a very similar style. Unfortunately has wasn't blessed with being surrounded by equally great players, coaches or winners.
In order to win a World Cup, you *must* have at least one genius in your squad. And you must give that genius unfettered licence to express himself on the pitch. Hoddle was England's genius; their best player EVER...and their chance to bag another WC. But they never had the courage to build a team around him and set him free to conjure his magic. Sad.....
Unfortunately England coaches played Robson and Wilkins instead of him, until 1986 when he was 29..Hoddle was the best English midfielder in that era, maybe Ever only behind Bobby Charlton and Gerrard, Scholes.
The one thing Hoddle lacked, was top speed acceleration. In the modern game, with the quick midfield pressing. That lack of pace, would have been costly. Apart from that. He had near perfect, ball technique.
That wouldn't have mattered one bit, there is a difference between running fast and being quick. Hoddle was always several plays ahead of his opponent. If notice he was a 1 touch specialist so dribbling wasn't his bread and butter. Xavi wasn't particularly rabbitlike either
Hoddle was more of a ball carrier than Pirlo, Xavi, as this comp shows. His lack of top speeds & accelerations would have cost him in the modern game. However his passing & ball techniques would remain intact. He'd be a slower version of someone like Kevin De Bruyne.
Elegance, outrageous technical ability, vision, touch, peerless long range passing with either foot. Loved watching the man.

Sfter italy won the world cup in 82. The italian manager said if he had glenn he'd base his whole team around him.
Agreed although Ray Wilkins would argue he was pretty good too.

The greatest English talent in my lifetime! I’ve seen them all since the 80s and I’m a Gooner but this guy was special and is underrated today!

A club level.
Effortless brilliance.
Genius on the ball. One of the greatest players ever who wore the England shirt.
Warra trophy for England
Ever to wear a football shirt.
My Glen Hoddle, I am a gen z discovering your talent, one of the pioneers
the most 'wtf just happened?' back-to-back moments i've ever seen in a soccer vid. i knew hoddle was good, but holy shit what a frickin artist. goated

Players from the past were truly special not this system players we have now
His goals made me tune-in to EPL many many many years ago.Never missed EPL highlights, Sydney Australia.

one of the most technically skillful players from England
If this is one of the best, then I’m not surprised you lot haven’t won anything in decades
Clueless. He's admired the world over as a world class player
One of the best players in the history of Tottenham Hotspur
My all time favourite player, so elegant, on a par with a mark waugh flick off his legs in cricket
He was playing a different game, decades ahead of his time
He was always superb at long passes. He would drop it on a sixpence for the winger to run onto.
Hoddle was pure silk
One of the best English footballers in history
Pure class made it look so simple which the very best players always do
Oozes elegance! Beautiful
Nice video, Hoddle was a great English player with great skill
Great awareness of what was around him and a shame he didn’t get more England caps than he did.
Gutti, Zidan, Beckham, and any number of Brazilians, all in one very underrated and outrageously treated English footballer..................

What a goal this guy looks so complete
Proper Route 1 - with a twist at the end.
This goal and Liverpools seventh Vs. Spurs at Anfield are my two favourite goals from the 80's.
Is it my eyes or anyone else see shades of Ozil in the guy? He must influenced a whole generation of players. What a talent!
Gooner here but this fella - total class, possibly Engand's finest ever attacking midfielder.
