"Trust me, One Drive not being encrypted is NOT an oversight" - But it IS end-to-end-encrypted... just like iCloud or any other major cloud storage service.

@@Andre-zd8ke Actually, yes, that is the case. But there is still, last I knew, a tricky way that it is implemented that does not guarantee privacy. I forget the details, but just saying that something is end-to-end encrypted does not necessarily mean it is as secure as most people would think.

Same with iCloud. For all intent and purpose OneDrive, iCloud are very secure for normal usage. If it wasn't government organisations such as Queensland Health (Australia) wouldn't use it.

I understand the move to MacOS from Linux. I did it. I had been using Linux as my main OS since 2002. I used Windows for gaming. A couple years ago I switched my gaming to Linux. I was happy. Then I realized that If I was to find a job that allows me to work from home I would NEED either a Windows PC or Mac. I chose Mac. I now use Mac as my daily computer and fire up the Linux PC for gaming. I'm happy.

A few things here. 1) Anyone who is completely honest with themselves would have to admit MacOS is simply better than Linux in almost every way. Not liking Apple or wanting to customize the OS not withstanding. 2) I've never ran MacOS updates and killed my system. I have done this on Windows dozens of times and on Linux hundreds of times. 3) Malware and viruses. These are almost exclusive to Windows. There are ZERO viruses for Mac or Linux in the wild and very few bits of Malware. (browser hijackers don't count). I worked as a computer repair tech for over 15 years and every single Windows computer I ever worked on was infected with something. Not a single infected Mac or Linux box in all that time. 4) I 100% agree with the UX on MacOS. Its leaps and bounds better than Windows or Linux. Yes you can make Linux look better but its never going to be consistent.

Original Mac user from the 80s who used Solaris / Linux for work most of the 90s... back when you had to compile everything by scratch. Forced to use Windows for some of my work by the late 90s and used it since for gaming with no Mac from 97 until 2020. Back in the 90s I ran MAE on my Solaris box to have the Mac interface experience... When I got my M1 Mac it was a game changer, literally everything I longed for back in the 90s. The stability and customization / automation of Unix with the Mac interface on it... the full fruition of the NeXT box I have still stored away. I just can't believe it took me 20 years to buy one. Nice to see other Linux / Unix users learning how great the modern Mac OS really is for power users.

I use a high-end Chromebook. That offers a stable and supported Linux ChromeOS. Inside you run containers to run your Linux applications. It allows you to create and run multiple containers at the same time. And you can easily create backups for those. You can also run Android applications.

I'd say that Linux is the middle ground between Windows and Mac, rather than Mac being the middle ground; since on Mac, you cannot play most games, and you can't pretty much install it onto a PC or a non-Mac laptop, whereas Linux isn't as reliable as Mac, and we don't talk about Windows' upsides over Linux since there are almost none, except for very specific needs of creative people.
And if you want to have Linux experience, you don't need to spend $9,167,354,604 to buy a Mac, an iPhone, Apple headphones, and an Apple charger.

I've been using Ubuntu for years, and I've never had any single problem after an update, but yes, software, in general, needs to be properly adapted to Wayland, and NVidia drivers also needs a bit of work too.

I have tried switching from Mac to Linux. Honestly the Mac is great and for me there are some things I can't really do on Linux. There are a few things that just kill it for me. I do have a Linux system that I jump into but overall I will probably be sticking to the Mac.

Sorry buddy but MS OneDrive HAS end-to-end-encryption. (And OneDrive works well on MacOS as well). As a software developer who worked in the MS Windows environment for decades I say you exaggerate a lot.
I also used MacOS for at least 10 years, almost exclusively since I retired, and I actually prefer it. And yes, MacOS is more stable (easier for Apple because they control the hardware) and has less bugs but the difference is not as much as some try to tell us. I do agree with MacOS being much more secure by default.
And, iCloud is end-to-end-encrypted even if you don't enable advanced data protection. Advanced data protection is related to Apple storing some encryption keys or not.
About Linux, as long as the big software packages (like Microsoft Office) are not natively available for Linux it won't hit the big time on the desktop. For many people, and especially in a non-trivial business environment, 80% compatibility by using Wine, Open Office or similar, is just not good enough. (Been there, done that).

I’d recommend reading the terms of service. Microsoft employees can get access to your OneDrive files. If it were E2E encrypted, that wouldn’t be possible.

    • @Andre-zd8ke
      @Andre-zd8ke 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@CybersecPat "Microsoft employees can get access to your OneDrive files" - Nothing to do with the actual end-to-end encryption but only with who got access to the encryption keys. Yes, some Microsoft employees can get access to your data, but since the Windows OS is written by Microsoft employees, they can in theory make sure they get access to basically everything on your computer.
MacOS & iCloud is no different except that using MacOS/iOS's advanced data protection enhances the privacy of the encryption keys. But of course if Apple would be untrustworthy and lies to you, this wouldn't mean anything.

I prefer mac more than windows, but I prefer linux more than mac OS. The reason is that I think mac was mostly designed with non tech savvy users pov. To me mac looks, somewhat extra polished visually. I am currently a uni student, major in CS, so i guess here linux would be compatible with more things i would use or do than mac (x86-64 and arm)

I'm very interested in your Linux takes. Obviously you can use whichever OS you want, but I don't understand a couple of things.
What collaboration are you doing this Linux doesn't support? Google Drive/Docs, Microsoft Office, Git-based all work without issue.
For Dropbox, Google cloud etc clients, there all sorted too without having to do anything. On most distributions, it asks if you want to log into Google or Dropbox when you install.
In terms of crashing and drivers, that's very interesting. When was our you last tried it? I've been on Fedora for 1.5 years now. My pc has never crashed

So I do some video production for my day job (much better quality than what I do here) and need premiere pro and photoshop for it. Also I need Microsoft office, and my team uses features of it that aren’t available in alternatives. I like to use proton drive and iCloud for file storage, because they’re more private. And as for the crashing, I think it boils down to me using 3rd party repos. That always seems to cause issues. But I need some software only available in those repos.
I’m 100% going to contribute to use Linux on the server side. It really excels for me there
