And when I mean lots of network activity, I mean hours and hours of lots of activity on the network. Keep in mind Windows update or Steam might be downloading large updates for games or the OS. So it isn't too easy to identify this stuff specifically unless it goes on for a long time.

I got ransomware once back in the early 2000s running WinXP. All my files were backed up, so I simply reinstalled Windows, and all was good.
That is the smart move!
