I was reading through the comments and there are all kinds of wild ideas in here. First, this Xingyiquan that Master Liang teaches and is presented in this video is entirely descended from Sun Lutang. It is almost verbatim from Master Sun's Xingyiquan Xue. It is not Xinyiliuhe quan. It has different origins from Wing Chun, though admittedly it has a similar character superficially speaking. Everyone on TH-cam seems to be experts on internal versus external martial arts. Sun Lutang was one of the first to describe such a difference. But some of his contemporaries, such and Wang Xiangzhai, had strong doubts about internal vs. external. No one seems to be very consistent on what internal is supposed to look like and it becomes a matter of guess work. Yes, Xingyiquan needs to have a fully connected motion, from the feet to the fist. That is why Sun Lutang emphasized standing in Santishi for an hour each day and why Wang Xiangzhai created Yiquan to focus primarily on zhan zhuang. I appreciated YMAA's comment that everyone in this video is on a path of learning. You can't expect everyone to be a master, especially when it is clear they are students who are doing their best.
Love this art. Its very powerful. And btw for those who say hands should be higher. It isnt boxing like in America or in Thailand. They can still block head strikes. And even against people who know what they are doing. But as all martial arts you can take whatever stance you want though and learn to apply the arts techniques to that stance if you prefer so. But itll be effective in fighting situations just as it is.
Internal arts are useful not only for self defense, but also in maintaining health and cultivating energy. Stressing in practice (gongfu) instead of muscular strength make us able to use the art even if we are old.
Actually she was one of five shaolin monks who escaped from northern temple when it was burned. She was hiding in a village when she found out a rich guy was after a young girl so she taught the girl Kung Fu to defend herself. The girl was small so the shaolin nun altered several styles of Kung Fu to fit the girls size and strength. The girls name was Wing Chun not the nuns.
This is from Yang's Xingyi video which was meant to accompany his bestselling book. I don't think the video is available now excpept on rapidshare. The book eas a real groundbreaker although I foound it a little technically daunting at times. That's just his style though. Yang was one of the first guys to actually demonstrate the practical application of Xingyi moves, not just the five elements but also the twelve animals.
I am glad to hear the softness of the style mentioned...too many people emphasize the end power and think it is a hard style. Great material as always from YMAA
@jbuetty its never too late if your willing to spend the time practicing.. there are many stories of master starting much older than age 24... there was a tai chi master who started in his 40s..
@baragentledragon I practice Xing Yi for sometime and I find that Xing Yi is more about the training of your balance between breath, foot work, and your body's adjustment on day to day basis. To me it feels something similar to doing yoga.
@ihavetheherpes May I ask why youre looking up xingyiquan if you don't like kung fu? No sarcasm intended, I'm just curious. I do agree, the hands should be higher. Also, the whole construction/destruction sequence thing i think is overrated, because it is a detrimentally limiting idea.
@6arcsn1sky Tradition has it (in my particular style) that Yue never had anything to do with xingyi just like he never had anything to do with eagle claw. It was passed down through the ages that the Dai brothers cooked up the whole story to make xingyi popular.
hmmm, it seems that sometimes her front leg is tensed, when she goes back and reverses, which is a pretty big mistake in internal styles. nothing is never tensed fully neither the arms, legs or even fingers
Regardless of what stories say, scholars debate whether Yue Fei invented xingyiquan's older style, xinyiliuhequan since the oldest recorded practitioner was a Hui named Ma Xueli. Looks very different compared to xinyiliuhequan.
He is correct, guys look in the Chuangtse, chapter 1. In the northern ocean there is a fish, called the kun, I do not know how many thousand li in size. This kun changes into a bird, called the peng. Its back is I do not know how many thousand li in breadth. When it is moved, it flies, its wings obscuring the sky like clouds.
@TheMartialartsJedi Actually Wing Chun was created by a nun from the Shaolin Temple. She had only one student and that student was name Yim Wing Chun. Wing Chun taught the technique to her husband who then taught the style to one other student who asked what is the name of this style. Wing Chun's husband decided to name it after his wife "Wing Chun".
@Nhia89 From what I heard and read about it, it is true. And btw the ppl in the video did not really perform it right i think. Because hsing-yi is a nei-jia martial art, which should depends on the connection with their body. Their backbone power was not really as good as it should be, and their arm(s) usually completely straighten, which should not happen!!! o.0
With the way it looks and the apparent history behind it, Xing Yi kind of sounds like an ancient chinese form of Krav Maga. It uses straightforward motions (with a disregard for high kicks), utilises simultaneous attack and defence, and was designed for military usage to build a soldier's fighting prowess quickly... I dunno, maybe I'm talking shit. :P
+John Hardin This is a vast topic. This article barely begins to answer your question. Enjoy. ymaa.com/articles/2013/07/popular-chinese-internal-martial-arts
When on a voyage, this bird prepares to start for the Southern Ocean, the Celestial Lake. And in the Records of Marvels we read that when the peng flies southwards, the water is smitten for a space of three thousand li around, while the bird itself mounts upon a great wind to a height of ninety thousand li, for a flight of six months' duration.
@1:57 the purple girls rear foot is pointing straight out...loose a lot of power when you push off like that...Should be 45 degree or best still 35!...zero061192 right about straight arms also...
I think Master Liang's xingyi applications are more realist than his taiji applications. I see more fighting spirit in this video than on the taiji one.
perhaps he meant simple and easy to learn... in which case there's nothing wrong with that. the only problem with lots of two man set work is it creates a false sense of reality if not coupled with spontaneous combat. But, probably not a problem here.
is this where wing chun derived from?lot of striking similarities! although i personally think wing chun is more effective in todays world! could be wrong? respect either way!
Why dont they have Rat/Rodent as part of the animals?!?! Have you never seen a rat escape a cat or even intimidate it with its kung fu?? I am offended! (just kidding)
gotta keep your hands higher. if your hands aren't protecting your face, someone who knows what they're doing will probably knock you out. look and bisping vs. hendo. i don't really like kung fu. been there, done that. i won't trash talk the art though, just not my thing. i'll stick to bjj, muay thai and judo.

I love Master Liang Shou Yu's approach to Xingyi. His mastery shows in the skill level of his students. She is NICE!!!
Well done. Xingyi is very effective. This is a good example of the style. Respect, Master Yang.

I am impressed by the girl. She moves very well! Her reactions are fast too
That was beautiful to watch....Thank you!
"Chinese ostrich"? That must be a new species...

i wanna learn some of this.
By looking at the lineage. Kyokushin Karate is derived part of Xing Yi Quan!!
The best XingYi demo on youtube so far, thank you, MORE PLEASE :)
Nei-jia is an ongoing process, as is the learning of these students.
He's amazing soft!

@baragentledragon nope wing chun is a whole different art. not a lot of movement and wide long strikes like these
@TheMartialartsJedi

this vid is henan
actually he is practicing Xing Yi Liu He Quan, not that big of a difference really.

i can't learn taiji if ur new to this

most people does it wrong so they aint able to learn the full techniques
WC and Hsing are the same almost.
