Pro tip, tuck your hood in it's causing too much drag! Could save a fortune in fuel and get you another ten knots! P,s is that not freezing with no enclosed cockpit?
Talking of impressing pilots. I was flying in Scotland in gliders. The national coach took a woman up for a joy ride. They ended up at 37,959 feet talking down to the jets crossing the atlantic. Since a lot of them are glider pilots there was a lot of chatter.
wow....you are like a modern day Charles Lindbergh. Super excited watching your video crossing. Another thought comes to mind....during world war 2 german u-boats used those mini helicopter to look for allied shipping and I could not help wonder if you somehow fell through some temporary time warp back into 1942. Good luck getting home.
They were autogyros, towed on a cable like a kite with the windmilling rotor providing lift. This is a powered machine with the forward thrust from the pusher propeller providing the energy to turn the rotors. Same idea but 'powered' differently.
Brilliant! With a lovely sense of deja vu when the Faroe Islands emerged and you landed into Vagar. Enjoy you stay. Great place. Great people! All best from here, and keep in touch with your final arrival date.
THANKS VERY MUCH for the heads up James, really appreciate it. Now, REST UP-you have been on a HUGE journey and deserve it. We have totally enjoyed our time with you and are in no rush. All the very best. Cheers for now.👍
Thanks yet again James - not wishing your incredible adventure away, but the end is in sight so get some quality rest, mentally reconsolidate and enjoy! Thanks for the great update. Inspiring stuff!
Congratulations James ...I was looking forwards to your video of the Vagar arrival ... gorgeous weather & scenery ...those islands must have been such welcome sight after all that ocean! ...so different to Norman's scary experience..."going through the post-box slot!" I totally understand that fatigue-crash ...on landing after long flights ... I had great ambitions to document my XC adventures of 2017 ... but was SO very tired each day ...decided to just enjoy the "present-moments ,places& peeps"! Love your explanations ...of your flight height, ..etc! Enjoy the well earned weather break & local hospitality! ...almost home!
For someone who had experienced all the things he has experienced, to say how much flying has taken such a toll on his energy/adrenaline levels is a substantial statement.
Cheers James - I missed your departure but hope to catch-up with you when you're back in the UK. I;m sure it's already been suggested but if you wanted to call into Rufforth on your way back (home of Gyrocopter Experience) you'd get a very warm welcome from us all! Enjoy your time in the Faroe's!
The AutoGyro Calidus is available with a full canopy and a partial canopy that can be swapped out seasonally, but the only gyroplane I've seen with a completely removeable canopy was the defunct Arrow-Copter. With an open cockpit, though, you're probably going to be wearing a helmet, and you can get 12-volt heated "snowmobile suits" that will keep you pretty toasty.
Congratulations! Almost home - what an amazing journey! Dorian certainly has made a mess of the North Atlantic but it looks like Gabrielle is the one trying to spoil the party! It's on a collision course for the U.K. - I think you'll be waiting this one out for a while... Enjoy the much deserved rest and recovery time!
Almost down to the point to wish you bad weather, get some sleep man, more than some! We can wait. Listening to you as I write... seems the weather is monitoring you!
A remarkable achievement by any stretch of the imagination, please stay safe James you have wonderful self motivation to do these adventures, and most of all thank you for taking the time to share your flights with us all,we wish you safe voyage all of the way to Popham.
Maybe people were asking why you fly solo and not so low James !! 😊 Not too far to go now, brilliant achievement and totally absorbing vlogs since day one. Safe flying and “ketch” up with you sometime soon James. 👍😉
Massive achievement and it's been amazing following your journey. Fly safe and look forward to the next vlog. Can't wait to hear your plans to do the reverse journey!!😁
Well done James, what a journey. I would love to do something like that. I’ve been in aviation a long time, commercial pilot for over 20 years. I am interested in buying a gyro and touring around Australia. My question is why did you choose Magni over other makes and models? No rush to get back to me, when your home and have time I’d love to have a chat with you about the pros and cons as my knowledge on gyros is limited. Cheers and good luck James.

My man, your story invokes emotion. I am trying to decide if it is positive or negative? You may want to think about getting a little bit bigger rig? You know if going to be crossing oceans, ? why not move up to a 172....LOL
Superb James. Quick question: how do you manage to film so much footage? What size memory card do you have in your device(s), and are these things permanently plugged in for power? (No negative effect on your power drain in your gyro?). Have a superb and safe final water crossing. Your adventure is amazing!
He was off the ground in like 1/4 of the runway. He also did a straight out departure flying the runway heading so there was no need to turn. I imagine he was heavy on fuel as well, and I don't think gyrocopter pre rotators get the rotor rpm to 100% so still need a ground run to accelerate the rotor system to 100% RPM. Gyrocopters can land in very short spaces, you are right about that.
Fallen Archangel - In addition to what Oooonumbers has already said, gyros can get off the ground very quickly but at that point, they do not have enough airspeed to climb out. They will fly along just above the runway building up airspeed - In windy conditions both the wheels-on and wheels-off phases are shortened considerably but gyros are not really particularly short-takeoff aircraft. Landings, however, can be very, very short and it is very easy to put down a gyro in a field which is too short to get out of which makes for a lot of engine-out options in an emergency but you'd better hope that you have access to a suitable trailer to recover your aircraft.
jim z - In the UK (and probably in other parts of the world) gyros are not allowed to be flown IFR - They are VFR-only no matter what avionics might be on board. Practically, with something like a mini-EFIS and GPS, it would be possible. Most gyros are not even fitted with an artificial horizon, let alone any nav gauges.
Yes, but a gyrocopter can’t hover. It’s blades are aero foil in section and this is where it gets lift from. It gets forward momentum from, usually, a rear facing propellor and not from the rotor. Having said all that some are fitted with a cyclic stick and can takeoff vertically and land but still can’t hover? Google is your friend.
Just a suggestion, but as we can't understand what you are saying most of the time during flight because of the wind/engine/rotor blade noise, could you please put subtitles in English during the editing of your videos? - Thanks!
Norman Surplus flew in his gyrocopter G-YROX from Iceland to the Faroe Islands on August 7 2015!!! He even helped you a lot, when you both flew together on part of your journey. Shame on you.
....the 'music' ruined your entire video. I'd much rather hear the engine sounds in order to get the most information from your video. I understand that its your choice and it isn't my intention to say otherwise but why do you folks feel that its necessary to force your tastes onto everyone else?
Thanks for all the support guys

330am. I'm wide awake.
And just amazed at what your doing. Man your living, and were watching, what's its like to live.
WOW this is amazing that it could be flown across the ocean island to island!!
Nearly home! Not far now. Just amazed that G-KTCH has flown all that way. What a journey!
James, thanks for the mention of Windy.com in your video ❤️
Nerves of steel ! Congratulations and thank you for sharing a once in a generation adventure !
I'm impressed by your effort in filming this flying adventure that not everyone can do.
Congratulation. Well done.
What an adventurer and inspiration, well worthy of a knighthood !

Zen and the art of Gyro maintenance!
Impressed, blown and thankfull for what you achieved James. Follow you since the start and hoping to seeing you safe back home. All the best!

Lost for words James, Incredible , wish you a safe journey as always. What a trip. WELL DONE
THANKS VERY MUCH for the heads up James, really appreciate it. Now, REST UP-you have been on a HUGE journey and deserve it. We have totally enjoyed our time with you and are in no rush. All the very best. Cheers for now.👍
Awesome and took alot of guts and faith in your Gyro
That flight over water has to be nerve wracking
Wow! That's insane. I would be terrified to fly across the ocean in that thing. But what a cool video and beautiful footage. Thanks.
In an open vehicle? You rock 🪨 🎸 💪 😎 man
What an amazing (brave) thing to do. 💪🏼
Thanks yet again James - not wishing your incredible adventure away, but the end is in sight so get some quality rest, mentally reconsolidate and enjoy! Thanks for the great update. Inspiring stuff!

Awesome, your video came up by chance. Loved it, the world needs people like you James.
Great video , very daring of you. My only regret is not seeing what the copter looks like. I really wanted to admire it before take off.

great to know that Windy worked well, cheers James

I would want a removable hardtop to I could have an enclosed heated cabin in the winter and open cockpit in the summer.
The AutoGyro Calidus is available with a full canopy and a partial canopy that can be swapped out seasonally, but the only gyroplane I've seen with a completely removeable canopy was the defunct Arrow-Copter. That's one of the coolest and gorgeous videos I've ever watched. :)
This eneds way more views!
So cool James! It takes some big balls to attempt a crossing like that. Well done and bravo👍
Seems like trying to drive a moped from New York to L,A wow, only about a million % more dangerous!
I am impressed with your videos. I was curious how far you could fly in one setting.
Congratulations! Almost home - what an amazing journey! Dorian certainly has made a mess of the North Atlantic but it looks like Gabrielle is the one trying to spoil the party! Well done ✅ that man 🎉

Like your flight helmet!
You are brave....flying gyro to that distance.....
Massive achievement and it's been amazing following your journey. Fly safe and look forward to the next vlog. Can't wait to hear your plans to do the reverse journey!!😁

Did you carry a raft with you? Would love to see some of the Greenland video!
Greetings from Finland!

awesome footage, make sure to rest up !
Balls of titanium
Thats cool like riding an air bike.
WoW …. Just WoW
Great video! What was the name of the song in your vid? It was cool!
Did I miss something? Curious what kind of gyro...? Looks like a fun flight! Cheers..
Would be cool if you would have gliders so you can descend and ascend from water 💧 surface
The story of Stranded Deep
Dude... this is just insanity .... awesome ... but pure insanity 😂😂
Na über Wasser ist ja richtig aufregend!!! Aber geschafft mit diesen Fluggerät!!!!
What's the plan for an engine out?

Hi im from the school you came to
Like crossing a dessert on a steal poney.
Hi James! Sorry to ask but how hard are the written exams for the gyroplane license? I know nothing about flying. Starting from scratch.
This is awesome. How long can u fly in one tank? And how much did u pay each landing and take off?
My man, your story invokes emotion. I am trying to decide if it is positive or negative? You may want to think about getting a little bit bigger rig? You know if going to be crossing oceans, ? why not move up to a 172....LOL
Did u crossed Atlantic?
What about fuel shortage
wow!! how did you fund the whole adventure? (from learning to fly to the gyro and the tour?)
Hi you came to my school
How far can one full tank get you?
Gyrocopter+atlantic ocean= is a recipe for disaster
Cant understand you but love gyrocopters. Nice flight.
Why not install floats in case of emergency water landing? a couple hundred dollar pontoons will save your entire aircraft
Remember me today
Nnice video, but why the music.....? minus 500 points
Ch1n4Sailor Ye that was terrible......
How. Long. Does. Take. To. Fly. To. The. United. States

Fran hope you are well. Get yourself over to Popham on the 22nd Sept I'll tell you all about it mate!
James Ketchell will see what I can sort out! 😀👍
@@JKpushinglimits I'm in the U.S...so if you could film that explanation I (and I am sure lots of others) would love to see it.
What is the range on that gyrocopter?
Why it takes you the whole lenght of the runway to take off ? I thought gyrocopters can take off and land in short spaces.
Does a gyro have enough instruments to be flown IFR?
jim z - In the UK (and probably in other parts of the world) gyros are not allowed to be flown IFR - They are VFR-only no matter what avionics might be on board. Practically, with something like a mini-EFIS and GPS, it would be possible. Most gyros are not even fitted with an artificial horizon, let alone any nav gauges.
Auto-Gyro Cavalon Pro is the closest. Last time I looked into them, they had achieved night VFR certification and were expecting IFR soon.
Fuel?
Yes, but a gyrocopter can’t hover. It’s blades are aero foil in section and this is where it gets lift from. It gets forward momentum from, usually, a rear facing propellor and not from the rotor. Norman Surplus flew in his gyrocopter G-YROX from Iceland to the Faroe Islands on August 7 2015!!! He even helped you a lot, when you both flew together on part of your journey. Shame on you.
You want your bumps felt.
It's naive irresponsiblity flying that thing over such a stretch of open water.
You must have a shit load of time and money to do all this.
Turned it off when the music began. Shame, cause it looked like a decent vid. One day people will understand that soundtracks are horrible.
What's the difference between a narsisist and someone who shows you the facts as he talks?
....the 'music' ruined your entire video. I'd much rather hear the engine sounds in order to get the most information from your video. I understand that its your choice and it isn't my intention to say otherwise but why do you folks feel that its necessary to force your tastes onto everyone else?
No, just couldn't watch it. Too much editing and trendy noise.
Whats the maintenance like on a gyrocopter compared to a helicopter ? Thanks
