I built a 4600 FT SQ log home in 1992, It took me and my wife plus all the friends I could muster, 8 years until it was complete ( was in and living on sub floors within 2 years). THAT is hard ass work and it will mess up that back. I am living in Charleston SC now enjoying the sunny weather. And at 70 + now I hurt every time I see you move one of those logs by hand :) I enjoy watching your videos

Absolutely incredible work, Nik. That old saying "Where there's a will, there's a way" certainly applies to you. That blessed little dolly is worth her weight in gold. Thank you for sharing those stunning sunset clips. I can imagine that it was breath taking in person. Great video!!! Wow Nik ! I have only just now discovered you and I am VERY impressed . Also very happy to have found you now as my wife and I have just purchased 60 acres on a lake in Ontario Canada and at 60 yrs old I am rallying to build another log house. I have been involved with helping build three in the past and I must admit to being somewhat intimidated to do it all alone . You are my new inspiration. I keep in good physical condition and really relate to the comment you made at 27 minutes about recognising when it is time to "quit" for the day to come back stronger. NOW I am excited to start with your first video and feast on all the details you present. We really like you !~! Thanks so much for posting these for us and all the best to you from Chris and Susi . Just came across this video and your channel. I am blown away, and immediately subbed. As teenagers a group of us built a small 10x12 cabin in our local woods using trees of similar diameter so I know how much effort this work takes. We did it all with nothing but hatchets, and brute strength, but to watch you do this alone is amazing. Keep up the good work Nik, you are a "Manimal"!

Hello Nick, we love seeing you building your dream, keep up the good work!
I have a little tip, you might want to change your hoist for lifting the logs on the trailer. I see it is heavy work, but there is an easier tool to help you.
Look for "Hand chain hoist" on google, you only have to turn the chain without using force. Maybe it will help you.
Good luck on your build. Greeting from the Netherlands, Maarten and Wendy.

wow, u r doing a gr8 job, u have done so much. Those peeled logs look lovely in the night light. What a spectacular location. That sun set was a real reward for all your hard work. Just remember the trees and logs won't run away on you, just take your time they will be very patient with you. Think it is important to enjoy the process too, which is hard if you push yourself too much, but you seem to know your own limits. Look forward to the next one.👍🏻

Where I'm peeling the logs I have signal, deeper in the forest usually is hard to find signal, so I have to be careful or it could take a long time before someone would find me. Nik Love your work. Any chance of seeing a sketch of your cabin plans? I built a smaller cabin 37 years ago in Oregon USA. I worked alone and devised some tools to lift the logs onto the walls. I posted 3 youtube videos about the cabin on one of them I made a model of the cabin and how I lifted the logs into place. You could adapt some version of it for your use and it proved to be very safe and fuctional. The site on youtube is( Logcabin building-tour, and log cabin building- step by step, and logcabin building-hewing a log . I also sprayed the peeled logs with a mild bleach and water mix. It kept them from developing a black mold that is very difficult to get off. Where are you located? We traveled Sweden and Norway quite a bit and have some idea of the country.

Maybe you could rig a snatch line in the trees to help bring the logs to the road, beats dragging the logs on the forest floor. Two pieces of wire rope, one parallel to the road, one going from the road down the hill, a couple of pullies . Did 40 trees one year on my steep hill side, only had a little mule come along, you got the tractor. Also a Korean women about 100-110 pounds that can cook and walk on your back after a day with the logs. But she must love you and you must love her, then it works. Aloha, God bless

YOU got GRIT bud!! That is some HARD stuff to do. In Alaska in our swamp country theres no way to move big logs like that without BIG machinery in the summer, And thats iffy because the swamps eat big equipment. Most of us "Bushmen" would drop, trim, length cut & notch our logs in the summer & have to wait for freeze up & a foot of snow to use a winch to drag the logs to building site. Raised the walls/roof the following summer. HOPEFULLY the snow didnt get too deep during dragging time or we were screwed. Just like Russia, Alaska winters showed no mercy. The state tried to bulldoze a road back into our area. The D-7 broke through the top of the swamps surface & was slowly sinking into the bottomless swamp. The state sent a D-9 in to try to pull out the D-7. It broke through & BOTH of the doziers were lost!! Took a few years for them to go compleatly under but they sank all the same. Homesteaders back in that area built floating bridges for miles that only ATVs could travel on & hauling heavy loads were banned. HAD to wait til winter freeze up & sled materials in. No other way....

Tie your block up 6' on a tree so you lift the log. You can use winch to tie log and make log bunks on trailer.

Unless your tractor's winch system is different than mine, those tow chains come off? If you ever forget your strap again, could you chain the back of the log in place by hooking a chain around it and hooking that chain to the back of your cart? Just a thought. I feel your pain. I hate when you have to get up and down off the tractor a hundred times to get one log up to the yard. Very frustrating. Glad it never fell off.

If you can get a front end loader for your tractor and get a set of forks it would cut your work time in half if not more. It would be well worth the expense because you could use it long term as well for other projects. I ha e one on my tractor and couldnt live with out it. Love the videos!

Using the winch to pull the logs into the air is a great idea. However, you can save the time you mentioned by not removing the chains from the front and just putting the pulley on a tree that's near the winch. Then, lift the front of the logs high enough to get your trailer under them, then let them down, take the cable out of the pulley, and pull it back in again. You won't have to unhook the chains from the front of the logs. The only downside I see is that it's not good to rewind the cable with no tension as it can get tangled. Might be worth a shot though if it will save a bunch of time over the course of the project.

At 0:58, you can also using felling wedge on an horizontal log to avoid blokking your chainsaw.

I know I'm late finding your channel, but it's good that you will not use that log, it has a left hand twist. Robert Chambers in his Book, "Log Construction Manual" says they can be troublesome. Good luck! Great footage so far!

Most of them are great, there are maybe 3 for now that are too curved, but for sure I will be able to incorporate them into something. If all comes together as I envision it, will be great. Thank you for watching!
