When aluminum is in contact with steel, the aluminum will corrode badly. There was sealant around the steel subframe to aluminum frame juncture, but you removed it. It is important to reseal those crevices in order to keep the water out.

Not sure if you checked it or not, but get up under the trailer and take a good look inside the king pin plate for rot holes. That's one of the number one reasons those aluminum flatbeds get junked.

When you’re hauling hay the restrictions are don’t hit the power lines or overpasses. It falls under the “loose fader” rules. So here in Ontario we keep it under 15’ or so and aim for 10’ wide or less if you can.

    • @fastinradfordable

Sounds like down in Kansas. Hauling round bales on a flat deck, you get to right at what you're talking about. 14.5 high, 10 wide. Which, they give us that by law hauling hay.

I get everyone bemoans spool gun. When it's set up correctly in the hands of a skilled operator it's a strong and economical way of fabrication. However, as most of us know: That is not always the case.
The cost of TIGing a trailer like that would be pretty astronomical.

Aluminum work fatigues, old trailers like that have none stop maintenance requirements and simply can’t handle the same loads they did new particularly things like coils that can be 60 thousand pounds in a 4’ section. Limited use for loads that’s have a even weight distribution such as the bails in the video are a great use for old trailers that just don’t have a place in the general freight sector. There are more and more places that won’t even load trailers that are over 10 years old, I’ve even been turned down because they said my truck was to old.

Awesome video. Reminded me of the days hanging out in the tractor as a kid baling hay.

I can help you save those nice air tanks..
    Simple thing here...
Drain the air tanks when you leave it sit for any long periods.. It helps keep moisture out, preventing interior rust..

Great to see some young lads who aren't afraid of a bit of hard work to make a buck. Added bonus that you're supporting local by bringing them in.

a good candidate to sandblast with a lite media - glass beads or walnut shells and baking soda and then spray it right after blasting with commercial epoxy like they use on bridges - naptha based

    Good truckin driver 👌
Just some pointers, straps gotta go inside the rub rail. Also if you like having all of your teeth please please please invest in an actual strap binder bar. Theyre made specifically so they're less likely to slip out while you're cranking on em.
Other than that love the vids brother!

One of the best things I’ve found for the anchor pins(brake pins) is heat and a heavy duty ball joint press. Most the time they will come out with just the ball joint press

If you are doing a lot of those restorations, invest in a dry ice blaster or soda blaster, or even a rust/gunk laser cleaner. Dry ice blaster cleans well and doesn't leave the area with sand everywhere like the sand/soda blaster. But i think the soda blaster cleans better than the dry ice blaster. You can thank me later...

Any time I've got rusted anchor pins, I use torch to heat up the ears, then an air hammer square in the center of the pin to drive it on through.

Check for corrosion on the frame under the kingpin plate. Common cause of death on those.
