That’s the compression release lever your pulling. It’s not intended to stop the engine. The fuel pump is probably on manual on. If you back the knurled
crew off on the fuel solenoid that should do it. I’m an old Cummins man, I think that thing is running very well. It looks like a NT 290 HP. Non FFC block
855 CID. FFC means it’s not a full (F ) flow ( F) cooling ( C ) engine, FFC was an improvement that had a bigger capacity water pump, and other
internal flow capacity. It’s a small cam engine, but they put them in lots of construction equipment long after the big cams where in the field.
No doubt if they scrap it, that engine will end up in a container heading to a distant shore. I’d pull it down and through in a set of liners, as the packing
seals might be trouble soon, and get another life out of it. Thanks for the video, I’ve finally forgiven you for torturing that 16-71 to death. Also, I sold my
82 K-100 VIT, to a restorer in Southern Ontario last June. I drove it from new for 26 years.

I used to work on the 170 ton version of this truck. They had v16 Cummins engines with an electric wheel motor system. If you applied the hydraulic breaks at more than 5mph they would burn the pads right out of the calipers. The breaks were actually an electric retarder system. When slowing down the wheel motors were used as generators. The current produced by the generators was routed through huge resisters on the deck of the truck. The resisters had integral fans that would scream like a banshee when you stepped on the”brakes”. All in all one hell of a ride!

Drove something similar, Terex 3315B in an iron ore mine in Western Australia back in the mid 80’s . If the “dynamic “ braking as described above failed you had to steer over these big windrows of soil that ran down the middle of the haul road till you stopped or could apply the service brakes. Problem was the water cart used run up and down the haul roads all day spraying water to keep the dust down, over time it made the windrows smaller and a lot less effective at what they were supposed to be. Was a heck of a ride to say the least🤓

That's actually a nice old Euclid. Lots of life left in her. Truly needs a DeBoss makeover. Good tires, engine runs well, pound out some of the bigger dents and shoot a coat of paint on her. New ones cost BIG $$$ and there's no substitute when you need one.
Will there be more on the trencher? Please?

That brake standard is an MSHA standard here in the US, applies to ALL mobile equipment on a mine site. Mine site doesn't just mean, say, a coal mine or gold mine, but even a gravel quarry or sand pit. Forward or backwards, all mobile equipment must have a parking brake capable of holding with a rated load on the steepest slope on the mine site.

Bowmanville had a fleet of Terex R-45s which were made in London, Ont. Had a couple left up into the early 2000s for waste dust and for road stone. Great trucks. They had 16v71 Detroit's in them. This truck shown is not as big as those R-45s and this one is NOT an R-45. More likely an early Euclid R-27 or R-30.

My Grandfather runs his own small scrap yard, I remember as a kid i would go with him in the summer when he would take a load to Inland Iron to off load and get paid.
At the time Inland had 1 or 2 old trucks identical to this, and being a kid around the age of 8 those trucks were cool as hell.

I spent half of my adult life working aircraft hydraulics in the military and I always got a thrill out of fixing something and watching the aircraft come to life. The humor on the job got us through some miserable nights, crappy troubleshooting, repairs or replacements, and a lot of -40F nights. I had a toy one of those when I was young, one of my earliest memories was playing with it in the bean field whilst my mum was picking, to earn the money so we could eat! Loading it it up with dirt and running it over the rough ground. I loved the colour of it! Little did I know then, that I'd spend forty years working on design of equipment for moving thousands of tonnes an hour of bulk solids - ores, coal, rock but mostly biomass fuel these days at ports and power stations, and increasingly through conveyors and silos rather than with mobile plant. It's a business that's been good to me, paid for me to raise my family and have some great times working all over the world on exciting projects. A key technology that's not covered in the educational curriculum, I never understand why, but without which there'd be nothing in the shops.

I know it's a little late to be posting a comment, and others have mentioned the knurled screw on the fuel pump to manually turn the fuel on and off to the pump. All the you tubers on here never seem to even look for it when starting one of those big old Cummins. They always look to get the electric shut off working before trying to start. Worked in a sand and gravel pit once and a crusher had a big 855 ci Cummins like that. I believe it's part of the N or NH series engines. No "ignition" switch, just a starter button. You shut the engine down by turning that little screw. Just had to remember to open it up to start.
