We had no idea how to save on the first day and we got owned by using lightning on the scorpion boss. We thought magic was bad, until my brother understood a tiny bit of how to use materia when Tifa explained it. And in my case I used the buster sword until the end of Disc 2, casting regen on enemies (I thought it was rain). As a kid from Europe, my English sucked. :P

Also, I didn’t have a memory card on my first runs, but I manage outrun the creature, winning the race by a millisecond! I like how, even to this day, almost everyone pronounces "Cait Sith" as "Kate Sith", while the real pronunciation is supposed to be "Kat-Shee" (the word comes from the Scottish Gaelic word for a kind of fairy that looks like a cat).
    I wonder if the devs thought that most English-speakers would know how to pronounce the name correctly back when the game came out. The only reason I learned the right pronunciation was thanks to the guide I used (the black one, as many of us probably remember fondly; the white one sucked and had spoilers).
    Edit: Credit to @CrimsonR6 for pointing out that SE made a statement last year saying the "official" pronunciation was actually "kate sith" now. I don't think it changes the point of my OP though since "ket-shee/kat-shee" was the originally-intended pronunciation in both the Japanese text and Gaelic.

      It's likely a Translation error
      The original was written in japans phonetic alphabet for foreign words and is written as "Ket shee", so more or less correct
      The translator of this game likely interpreted it funny and wrote it in a way that a native speaker would intuitively read as "Kate Sith"

    • @DrunkenHotei
      @DrunkenHotei หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CaptainSunFlare While that would make some sense, evidently it's not true.
      According to Wikipedia, the original way the character's name was written in Japanese is _ケット・シー,_ which would be pronounced "Ketto Shī."
      edit: It seems like I misunderstood your comment, and that you acknowledged that the name was written with correct pronunciation in Japanese, so I don't understand your hypothesis. Are you saying the translators didn't bother trying to translate the name phonetically at all? That seems unlikely to me.
      Clearly, since the spelling is correct in English, the translators had to figure out that ケット・シー = "Cait Sith" (as a mythological figure). They then seem to have ignored the Japanese and Gaelic/English pronunciations altogether while leaving the spelling as is for some reason.
      It's likely then that later down the production pipeline, someone saw the name written in the Roman alphabet and either didn't bother to check its origin, change the spelling to better reflect the original pronunciation, or figured "meh, nobody's gonna care anyway." A combination is also possible, of course.

    Great video, I remember watching KartSeven, Luzbel and XeroKynos play this game tons back in the day. The amount of skips that have been found in this game that all save over 10 minutes is nuts. Good coverage, your explainations were easy to understand although using the same few songs over the course of an hour and a half got a tad stale

    I don't know if this is a skip or if my disc was scratched and bugged the game that way, but I basically skipped all of disc 2 midgar once. After Cloud rejoined the party at disc 2 my party consisting of Vincent, Tifa and Cloud went to Lucrecias cave and after a cutscene I got to the change disc screen. I changed disc to disc 3 and the barrier around the northern crater was gone

      For this one I had to use the wayback to get videos of some of the early runs, but a lot of the strat developments were on the SDA forum and Brutal actually preserved the entirety of the gamefaq thread on FF7 before they nuked the forums. A lot of it is talking to people that set records and research the game though

    56:20 pretty sure the gate between Sectors 6 and 7 is never used in the game.
    By the time you're done with the dress quest, you can't go back to it. You're down Corneo's hatch and on your way to the sewers, which lead to the graveyard, which leads back to Sector 7 and the plate collapsing. So there's no Sector 7 to go back to no more.
    The only way you access Sector 6 during the natural course of the game is through Sector 5.
    It's almost like the load trigger was put there specifically to be used by speedrunners.

    • @SyndicateOperative
      @SyndicateOperative 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Technically speaking, that door is used, it's just used for a cutscene (Tifa arriving via carriage).

    • @Diandredofus
      @Diandredofus 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SyndicateOperative True, but that's just an animation. If we were to count that, then you could also count the FMV when the party swings through the door as the plate is collapsing.. Although that's not in-game, but hey.
      Still, the game never expects you to step on the loading trigger at any point because the point at which you go to Sector 6 is determined by the story. That's why the guards are there after all. They probably just didn't bother removing the loading trigger.
      Even if the guards weren't there, I don't even think there's any point where you can go through the door without breaking sequence or logic in some way.
      Cross the loading zone upon first arriving to Sector 7, and you magically find yourself with Aerith.
      Cross it when you first arrive in Wall Market and Cloud would technically be able to alert Avalanche as to Tifa's perceived "kidnapping", which sort of defeats the whole necessity of crossdressing (but Remake sort of retconns this with Tifa telling Cloud her plan on the back of the carriage, so who knows?)
      My money is on the devs simply implementing the trigger during early design and forgetting about it. Hence the guards. Speedrunning will always rely on happy coincidences.

    From what i know in the first release of the game the translation from Japanese in earlier versions she was called Aeris, it was then translated to Aerith in later versions, so OG FFVII players she'll always be Aeris but if you played it a bit later then she'll be Aerith and can cause quite a lot of arguing back and forth between the playerbase on her "true" name.
    In the EU versions i dont think she was ever updated as in both versions i owned, the original and also the "platinum" version she was named Aeris in both versions. So for me she'll always be Aeris

    Fun fact. Me and my friends in the late 90's early 00's shared games and this one was one we played numerous times. One of the discs got scratched so bad it wouldn't pass the canon firing scene, so I just messed around and put in different discs and it actually keeps playing the game substituting the cut scenes for random ones from that disc. That allowed us to keep playing. Maybe it could be used as a shortener of cut scenes lol probably much better ways, but if you wanna try it it can be funny

    10:09 When I got to Cosmo Canyon in my first playthrough of FFVII (which was earlier this year), I was confused because the buggy never malfunctioned for me, but walkthrough guides (which I used because I'm stupid) said that it was supposed to happen near Cosmo Canyon. So I did a speedrun glitch just playing normally!

    • @AndroJonny95
      @AndroJonny95 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      did you actually get past cosmo canyon on the buggy? the malfunction won't happen if you get out of the buggy early and walk up to it, but that still won't skip it as you need the buggy to progress further (if you complete the cosmo canyon quest in this way the buggy won't malfunction at all, but you still have to complete the quest before you progress with this method
      i always used to do this as it made it easy to go back to Fort condor periodically! but fair play if you managed to actually skip the whole area, incredible luck 😅
