Man... idk what it is about your videos. The beauty of the landscapes, the dedication and craftsmanship of the work, or sheer peacefulness you do it.... but your videos always calm me down and make me smile. Which is something kinda rare for a guy with PTSD. So thank you for your videos.

Greetings Shawn - Tom and I have been watching you on TH-cam TV for nearly a year. We usually watch MSR with a mug of coffee early on the weekend - - a great way to relax and learn. As a pair of Alaskans that inherited a 1927 two-room cabin within the Missouri Ozarks, we respect your skills, and we appreciate all those extra hours and days it takes to deliver these videos to us all. Wilderness Medicine: Make a yarrow salve or grab a yarrow leaf and chew it up and press it onto the bleeding wound as an emergency poultice for any bleeding cuts. Legend has it that yarrow, Achillia millifolia, is named for Achilles who used it on his wounded soldiers. Been doing this for decades. Works like magic and never any infection.

Hey Shawn, to solve the issue of patching the back of the oven when you may need, perhaps cutting (with a circular saw) a 2.5' x 2.5' opening (depending on the size of the clearance as well as the oven) - a door which you can hinge, somewhat like your underground storage so you can access if need be? Anyways, I've been binge watching for the past 7 hrs. You remind me of my Dad, who passed 3 months ago, I wish I could have binged this with him, he'd have gotten a real kick out of your channel. I love your content. Get well my friend, you are an inspiration.

Edited to add: Consider adding heavy duty rubber bands to your first aid kit. Bandaging your own hand, by yourself while holding pressure is a circus act. I've used the bands as small tourniquets for my digits on more than one ocassion.

@@donaldhofman296 If I could count the times I've done that. Rubber band TQ, elevate, clean, super glue, repeat in a few weeks. Lol. ha ha ha... I'm a female, and I'm addicted to watching you, building, and puttering away. My dad was the same as you, always doing something. He too, never needed instructions, follow patterns etc. He was handy, and my brother is the same way too. I lost most of my vision to glucoma, and was never afraid of tackling jobs around the house either. I enjoyed it. Wish my husband got off his lazy duff, and gain some knowledge from you. Kind of late for us, we're both in our 60's, but hopefully you have some younger people watching, and a hint of advice, pay attention to whats going on here. You might learn something, and save your self some money one day, doing it yourself. This guy knows what he's doing, and you'd be learning from one of the best.

Shawn didn't show the moment of OWWW! Just the bandage after he'd done the first aid. If you do watch, it's when he starts to carve/shape the door for the oven that is THE time, around 47 minutes in. Relax with all the sharp objects before that. I admit, I was so tense, but then when he got to the door, it ratcheted up a lot, I was squinty, but then just the bandage (there is some blood, but it's, uh, not, uh, too bad).

Some of the oldest trees are 4000+ years old. The oldest being in California, (White Mountains) and one of the problems with dating old trees is what Shawn shows us in this Video, the insides are rotting away while the outer layers are the only thing that still shows the rings. I'm 59 years old and just a few years ago learned that it's the outer layers of the Tree that keeps it alive. The Internet has turned all of into Geniuses who don't need to know how to read for the most part. Video like this one has so much information in them that we can't help to not learn! Thank All of you that share your knowledge with the world! God Bless us All!

Due to very complicated health problems and dozens of major surgeries I’ve had since I was young, I now have a fully implanted venous access port in my chest, which I need for the administration of various intravenous drugs and infusions, which I actually set up and administer myself at home, which saves me having to visit the hospital twice/thrice weekly.
Anyway, the implanted portacath in my chest leads directly to my superior vena cava, via a silicone catheter. The last one I had which was replaced 2 years ago, lasted for an incredible 6 and a half years. Most ports are used for intensive cancer therapy, so are only ever in situ for a year or 2.
Anyway, my advice is, when injuring oneself and if you suffer/experience blood loss, is to keep very calm, try hard not to panic, and try and relax your thoughts as to what you need to do.
I say this, as once, when I removed the special Huber needle that goes through the skin on one’s chest into the port, usually there is a small dribble of blood when you pull the needle out of your chest, but once, for some strange reason, a waterfall of blood started to cascade from the implant, and was actually pouring down my torso profusely, as you can imagine the implant is only about 8 inches away from the heart via the catheter.
This happened late at night, and my wife was fast asleep, and I didn’t want to wake or worry her unnecessarily. I did a mini panic for a couple seconds, and then just got a huge dressing pack and compressed it to my chest. I was fine, but yes, bleeding can really throw one off guard when it happens. Apologies for blabbering on, I just wanted to say if and when accidents occur, think, breathe, keep calm and deal with it without stress!
I hope your finger doesn’t impair or impede your workflow too much!
All the best, keep up the admirable work, my wife and I enjoy your videos. My wife especially loves watching simply for the snippets of Cali!
    Paul, UK

Just finished watchin your video and seen your first aid kit! Like I said I'm a Plumber in NYC and a lot of the walls I need to get into ta make my repairs are metal lath and plaster. So I'm making repairs beyond the lath getting razor cuts on my hands and forearms, my quick fix after I clean my wound is that I always have crazy glue in my first aid kit, if its deep, neosporin then crazy glue and a butterfly band-aid done deal. Make it happen, add crazy glue to your first aid kit! Good luck with the build! See Ya Friday! ... Love, Peace & Chicken Grease! 😎

Y'ouch! 60+ yrs old and have YET to think "well, if I have to have an injury today, that is prob the best spot to have one". So maddening and so sorry. Godspeed. Love that oven - actually it all looks great! Cali is such an adorable little movie star. Love her energy, sweet face and that happy tail!! Stay safe and have a great week!

It has taken me a long time to build up enough courage to watch this video as I am so squeamish about blood. I am glad you did NOT lose part of your finger and you had the supplies needed to take care of your injury.
As another viewer stated, I too, was on high anxiety level wondering at which point the injury would occur. It brought back memories of my father being injured on the job when he built houses when I was young. He ended up losing part of his thumb. Like you, he did not let this stop him, and after it healed, he continued to build houses.
I am continually amazed at all of your skill, and how many things you know how to build. Thank you for your videos.

I’m a new subscriber to your wonderful videos and, as others have commented, find them so interesting. It’s also reassuring to know the arts and skills of building and maintaining a house and the land it sits on are still alive and well. In the stressful, hurry-up world we find ourselves living in today, it’s very therapeutic and inspiring to watch you build and create your cabin, as well as cook very delicious-looking meals over an open fire. I particularly love your magnificent dog, Cali; her beautiful face is always alive with love for you and her huge grins display how much she enjoys the time she shares with you as you build. Please keep her safe from the bears and wolves. I worry she may be surrounded and attacked or otherwise injured by them. She’s such a special dog!

After seeing that title, I was watching carefully at your handling of the sheetmetal... Working around HVAC, I've gotten bit quite a lot doing tin knocking. Ya had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Pain is a mean teacher indeed. Glad you're ok.

I haven’t watched yet. I’m commenting just on the title. I love your videos and how you inspire the viewers. I feel connected to you. My biggest fear is that you get hurt out there, alone, and far away from medical treatment. I sure hope you’re ok. I’ll find out in a second when I watch. You should carry a tourniquet in your pocket at all times, fwiw. God bless you and your family, Shawn.
