Most people who do complain about it being a swing game is mainly because the combat is Swift and brutal so there is little to no room for mistakes. If you don't put this to yourself or have a backup plan then you end up losing. I think most people are so used to playing games within invulnerable saves to get them out of their mistakes

My necromancer has hardly made it off the board with more than one treasure the whole series of games I've played with him. He's always broke, getting by on the skin of his teeth, keeps having to sell treasures to make a warband for the next game... Now this may come off as griping about bad luck but I love this character. Every little victory is a triumph, my absolutely atrocious luck is just plain funny at this point ( I got tabled by a wraith that spawned in my backline ) and I just find it amusing to envision my beaten and limping wizard stumbling into a pawnshop outside of frostgrave to sell off some 1000 year old relic just to hire some jackasses from the bar to go do it all again.

Glad to see you cover such an awesome game!! The designer's other games are totally cracking too. Both worth a look into!

You definitely sold me on Frostgrave.
Besides financial constraints (because I live on disability benefits), my biggest problem would be finding someone to play with. I know of two people who play GW miniatures games - together - and that's it. Also, they're French (I live in rural Brittany), I imagine that the manuals have been translated? I'll have to have a look on Philibert, I know they sell the models. But then I'd lose the narrative, thematic side as I lose immersion when playing games in French because of the additional cognitive load 🙂
But...my 13 yr old does have a vast amount of Lego, maybe we could make that work together to give it a try?

I’ve been toying with playing Stargrave, but Frostgrave caught my attention perhaps because almost 60 years ago I played D&D an Traveller but they were just to fill the gap between War Games.
The advantage of Frostgrave for me is that I will have little problem with painting a fighter because I have a Gandalf figure that I painted for my Son a Harry the Hammer figure then later I bought a vampire counts army for my grandson also some space goblins.
BUT you have fired my imagination with this video, and I suppose you are going to do some more videos. I hope😎

Frostgrave does look like a lot of fun, and you make some very excellent points about Games Workshop and warhammer. I love the line that it is often “a miniature game first, a war game second.” However, I can’t help but notice that everything I learn and hear about Frostgrave essentially shows it to be a love letter to Games Workshops late, great masterpiece, Mordheim. Everything from the lore (a cursed, blighted city, mercenary war bands on the hunt for magic items and treasure, etc) to much of the mechanics makes it’s primary influence very explicit. Certainly the rules are updated, and in many ways no doubt improved. Games Workshop has a nasty habit of cancelling all of their most popular, well-designed, and affordable games. Mordheim went off the market back in 2004, but a dedicated fan community keeps it alive; often kitbashing Frostgrave minis in order to assemble their Mordheim war bands. Again, nothing wrong with Frostgrave picking up the mantle, especially considering the fact that GW discontinued Mordheim. But I would suggest to any Frostgrave Fan that they give Mordheim a look.

Frostgrave models fills a lot for Warhammer armies, such as the wizard boxes for anyone wanting to add more wizards to their army that looks different from one another, or use the Soldiers 1 for a Free Company unit from the northern parts of the Empire. There's even a guy who made a fanatic army using Frostgrave Cultists and Warhammer Fanatics.

There is a solo variant by the same designer titled Rangers of Shadow Deep that is fun, although the magic system is much simpler and doesn't play as large a role. In terms of Frostgrave, I actually prefer the Ghost Archipelago spinoff, which uses a magic system more akin to having superpowers. I also prefer the tropical setting with dinosaurs and serpent people. It is much more pulp fantasy than the more traditional high fantasy, Scandinavian-inspired of Frostgrave.

Hey buddy great review on Frostgrave 👍
It’s one of the more affordable games that’s in my collection and while I did grab a couple of Northstars official miniatures (the soldiers and cultists sets) I found that Reaper minis had a plethora of uniquely sculpted Wizards in different styles that worked perfectly for each school of magic, all while not breaking the bank or my wallet. Unfortunately my gaming group has whittled down from 10 or more to just a couple guys since the beginning of Covid so I don’t get to play as often as I would like to but I did pick up Rangers of Shadowdeep since it’s a solo playing game and I also made my own version of Frostgrave that takes on the classic dungeon diving theme.
I’ll be sure to check out some more of your videos since it’s my day off and the temperature is absolutely disgusting today at 95*F and I’m not doing anything but hanging out with the air conditioner in my bedroom lol
