Leaving Album Of The Year definitevely was one of the best decisions I've ever done in my life. Now I can happily listen to stuff I actually enjoy instead of forcing myself to like OK Computer or feeling insecure about liking an artist with less than 70 user score.

There's a quote by Hank Green that I think about whenever I see/hear someone insulting someone else's music taste.
"Don't ever rag on someone for their music taste. Music is such a glorious part of the human experience and literally no good can come from making it worse for someone."
I agree with him a lot. I think we'd all enjoy music more if people would cut out this taste flexing contest and just try to appreciate what other people enjoy. And if you don't like it that's fine but you don't have to be mean about it, just agree to disagree.

Literally any time in my life that I’ve said any specific music sucks, I’ve then listened to it and really enjoyed it. A big issue is too many people 1) define themselves by genre, thinking they have to be dedicated to [anything] genre and that genre only. And 2) too many people get caught up in the mainstream and don’t take a step back to see all the other music they’re missing out on.

So funny cause this happened to me with BTS recently lol. A rap fan music reactor (Anthony Ray) got me into them, of all people 🤣 Thought they would suck and was very surprised at how versatile and extensive their discography is. And that they actually write and produce a lot of their music. Songs I'd recommend are:
Outro Tear, Rain, 134340, Danger, Louder Than Bombs, Baepsae, Pied Piper, Ugh, House of Cards, Singularity, and Black Swan.

This gatekeeping happens all over the damn place as well, espeically video games. There are too many times where people will build their entire personality off of not liking a specific thing, and it gets toxic FAST. And then they wonder why no one plays their game. It's like "you chased everyone away, the fuck did you think would happen?"
If you wanna get more people into your thing, the best thing to do is encourage and guide them into it. Let them explore it for themselves. You CANNOT force people to do it, it never works. And if they don't wanna broaden their horizions? Well, then that's their desision! Maybe they'll pick it up when they feel ready, maybe they never will. But just... guide them.

The rap community is such a good example of this. Old-heads gatekeeping the entire genre because the "new rappers" don't write quadruple duple entendres, weirdo underground fans acting pretentious because they listen to people with less than 1000 streams on spotify, and self-titled "hip-hop heads" clowning on other people's takes because "their top 10 is not objectively correct."

    • @gnarwhal7562
      @gnarwhal7562 ปีที่แล้ว +28

Even though pretty much all I listen to is the old school and weirdo underground hip hop, I completely agree with you. I work at a record store, and whenever I try to get younger kids into the classics/lesser known albums of the genre, I always approach it from a place of attempting to understand their specific tastes. Nothing will turn them off to these discoveries like making it into a pissing match between what is and isn't objectively better. I don't care for a majority of the sound cloud rappers who are popular today, but I never knock people who enjoy that music because I know that they see something in it that I don't, and that's dope that they found those artists on their own

    • @Crystal-xt4sn
      @Crystal-xt4sn ปีที่แล้ว

@@gnarwhal7562 Do you have any recommendations for some lesser known albums to listen to? I've been trying to get into the underground but I haven't really gone past Danny Brown or JPEGMAFIA (not really that underground anymore but I still thought they were amazing).
Also, I wasn't calling underground music weird, I was saying that the people who flex listening to it are weird. Like, enjoying underground music is fine, but when people shame others for not listening, it's kinda weird.

I just don't wanna hear another song about gun-wielding drug addicts talking about making off with someone's wife and slipping her coke while she goes down on the whole crew.
Seriously, stuff's the rap equivalent of country music about being girls, church, getting drunk, and going muddin' in their pickemup truck.
It's not just old-heads gatekeeping. It's people who like real music with soul and despise corporate-backed white noise that only serves to line someone's pockets at the expense of our entire culture.

@@jordydiaz6894 Always has. Never said it didn't. I don't listen to the crap, I just don't like when it's associated with genuine art is all.
It's like comparing those mass produced, semi-automated, text to speech Reddit read channels or the new wave of ChatGPT-generated garbage with genuine content creators who put a lot of work into their stuff.
Really, it's a tale as old as art. Some people create. Others grift. It's been that way forever, regardless of genre. Sad fact is that the majority of the population has never cared. They just go along with whatever. That's how trends are, whether some silver-tongued devil enamors the masses with sweet words or some juicy thumnbail and clickbait title manages to draw them in. It's all the same.
There's genuine art out there, some with positive messages, some that makes you think. Then you've got idiotic kids allowing themselves to be passively brainwashed because they "don't listen for the lyrics" and "just like the beat". It's sad. And people wonder how our culture degenerated into what it is.

As someone who regularly listens to Kpop, you would not BELIEVE the amount of gatekeeping that lies around in fandoms, like the amount of times older listeners (cough cough ARMYS cough cough) have told me "You can't listen to (abc) beacuse haven't known them long enough!!" Is insane, like, bro, how am I gonna 'know them for long enough' IF I CANT EVEN LISTEN TO THEM (BY YOUR LOGIC) BEACUSE "You're not old enough!!"
And that's I don't really regularly interact with kpop group fandoms, besides Skz and Xdinary heros. Not saying that all kpop group dwellers are like this, but definitely watch out.

Kpop is a really funny genre to get elitist about. Like it's just pop. It's pop in a language you don't understand. Sometimes they rap badly in english. All these groups are built and owned by profoundly evil corporations and their songs are written by at most 3 guys. The hipster mentality is grating, but usually it's directed at something that's actually obscure or against the mainstream.

    • @oo8962

Woah I didn't know this. I used to be a 2nd gen kpop fan and there's no such gatekeeping before. You have a slight interest in kpop? Good, you're our buddy now. Here's some groups you might be interested in.
That's when kpop isn't really mainstream worldwide yet. I mean, yeah lots of people know it but not like bts or blackpink level of mainstream.

This also reminded me of when I was in class, and I was showing one of the guys videos of a concert I’d been to recently. I saw Poppy and I had a really great time and I wanted to share it. He didn’t know who she was, he asked if that was Weezer, cuz Weezer has that song “I just threw out the love of my dreams” featuring a female singer. I said no and showed her Spotify page. Later that day I had a moment of realisation, I reacted so calmly to that moment, I didn’t go BRUH HOW TF DO YOU NOT KNOW HER BABABA, I probably would’ve back in my Hip Hop Instagram days. I used to ask these questions online when I was new to music, and people were so rude, and I didn’t wanna turn out like them.

First reply called their music taste bad. It's such a puny thing to get mad at people for. My favourite artist(s) are BTS, and people make fun of me for it a lot. I have literally written thousand word essays on their lyrics and the evolution of each member's songwriting style (yes, they write their own lyrics 90% of the time) bc I find them so moving but they all assume that I'm only into them cause they're hot. Their work has been my main source of joy for the past year, I don't see what's wrong with that.

in august 2021, i started my first ever music playlist. by may 2023, that same playlist only had 180 songs. at that time, i would’ve said my favorite artist was the beatles, but only because i had like 5 of their songs in the playlist.
during may of 2023, i converted my playlist from youtube to spotify and started using spotify for my music listening. shortly after that, i listened to a full album for the first time ever. never in my life had i willingly listened through the entirety of an album until that moment. it was Let It Be. so fast forward 7 months, it had gone from a single youtube playlist with 180 songs to a spotify wrapped with 890 songs total. as of now, ive added around 40 albums to my spotify since my first album in may.
i have to thank my sudden increased interest in expanding my music to radiohead. i got hooked on them in june, and they’re the only artist that i’ve listened to the entirety of their studio albums (except for nirvana but they only have 3)
im still trying to expand my music taste. i’ve never listened to the lonely hearts club, i’ve never listened to MBDTF, ive barely listened to the wall. i only have 5 rap albums in my spotify. i got a long way to go.

He's a big Korean rapper, also a really good producer and lyricist. My favs on the album are Snooze, Polar Night, Huh, and Haegeum (title track which he wrote, composed & produced by himself).

I've found that the issue is actually much worse in real life, as opposed to what the video says. Both there and in the internet though people will clown on your music taste. I've always had to not tell about my music tastes because pretty much all the time I do it turns out awful. It feels like everyone listens to the same few artists, just like the video said. Some examples I've seen are Radiohead, 10000 Gecks (or something like that), MF Doom, Death Grips, but after listening, they're just really not something I'd listen to. I just like niche artists and niche games in general, some of my favourite artists are popular within small communities, specifically artists like Myukke, Frums and Ebimayo who are popular within rhythm game communities, but outside, no one knows them, and since they've never heard of the kind of music these artists make, they tend to hate on it. And that's sad, I just want to enjoy the stupid music, I don't like "real" music, simply forced not to share music opinions

The genres of music he makes are alternative, electro, progressive, and pop. He is also one of the three members of So Far So Good. In 2013, he silently released his first Album "Abissama", with little acclaim. In 2016, Paul released "Ma Hill", his more known album featuring the song "The Ship"

As someone born in ‘96, I generally don’t listen to what other people my age listens too. I mostly listen to old music from 1960-2009, and anything later is mainly either Country or indie.
I generally don’t like pop music especially from 2013-present, and rap is not my cup of tea, though I’ll occasionally listen to some oldskool hip hop when playing a Tony Hawk game. And I can’t stand dubstep because it doesn’t even sound like music 😖. Even rock sounds more like rap or edm these days.

I see this not only online but in real life too. Frequently I'll bring up an album or a band that I like and immediately I'll get scoffed at or made fun of for liking it. Like, The Beatles might be super basic to be into but why's everyone gotta be so negative about it? I also really hate when people say you're not a real music fan if you're not into super obscure underground artists who have like 5 fans total. To me it doesn't matter how popular an artist is, if I like the music then I'll listen to it and more often than not try to share it. Rant aside, I enjoyed this video and I'm glad there are people in the world who are more open-minded to others' music taste
