You'd be suprised with the innovation that is happening with earphones right now. Alot of chinese companies are making iems that sound like 100+ dollar earphones you get with mainstream brands, for like 20 bucks. Stuff like salnotes zeroes, tangzu wan'er, qkz x hbb khan. They call it "chi fi".

As an audiophile, you did an excellent job with your research and in general respect for the hobby. This vid is a great overview of the entire audio landscape, and not just the super-mainstream landscape. I instantly knew that you did your research when you said and defined IEMs by name. Even huge tech TH-camrs will still call an $800 pair of IEMs, earbuds. Huge respect from the dedicated audio community.

Something to know about headphones is that they have never gotten better, just more convenient. For example, a pair of stax electrostatics from the 80s or hd600 which is now 26 years old, sound absolutely fantastic, even compared to modern headphones. The hd600s could even be considered one of the best headphones under $500 you can buy today. The improvements in headphones are features such as wireless and noise cancelling.

I'm listening to this video on Powerbeats 4. Bought them secondhand (or refurbished) for a 1/3rd of the price and they have worked quite well for the last year or so. Good profile and I like having a wire around my neck so I don't have to put the headphones in a case. A benefit there is the cable is a part of the ear loop. Hoping I can get more mileage out of them than others I have had in the past.

The best value headphones are the HD6XX imo. If you want to go cheaper, get the SHP9500. If you want to go more expensive get the Meze Empyreans.
I got big ears and my head gets hot so I need a lot of padding and airflow - all of those are great choices comfort- wise. The SHP9500 don't have great bass but the soundstage, price, and comfort make up for it. The HD6XX could be the last headphones you buy, but if you wear them for +8 hours a day I found the headband kinda dug into my head a bit. The Empyreans really are the best I've ever heard. The bass is crazy deep and you could wear them for the rest of your life and they'd still be comfortable. But for most people, just stick to the HD6XX.

What’s cool about these headphones is they don’t block your ears at all. If you have ear drainage, as I do, these can come in handy. It also means you can hear everything around you as you listen.
Quality isn’t extremely great, but it’s really notable for open ear headphones, and they’re pretty easy to use

As an audio nut this video seems a bit... Unbaked. I mean when mentioning open backs you completely fail to mention the most important aspect of having them opened, the fact that it drastically improves soundstage. Not to mention that iems don't cover every little earphone you can put inside your ear. The easiest way to tell apart iems from earphones is the removable cable. It's clear you're a beginner to this hobby, so I hope you'll learn more with exposure, since this hobby is way to big to condense in one comment and I don't really have the time to do that. But I'll recommend a few youtubers to watch like z reviews, dmz, crinacle, bad guy good audio, and also r/headphones on reddit.

@@vali69 yeah i mean, your right, throurought my Journey till today i've only as much watched oluv for the sound samples he brings in addition to measurements, also bought most products baded on his recommendation, also like crin a lot, his website's really usefull, but yeah for someone starting out maybe just one or two to digest enough info will do. There's really a lot to talk about sound if its really a thing we want to get into.. And if i am to tell i am as much an entusiast not an audiofile(heck never will be!!)
Edit:also not invalidating your recommendations just using my own experience as an example really.

unlike game consoles or computers headphones don't get "better" with time. If anything we kind of hit the peak of hi fi audio back in the 20th century. It seems like brands today are more concerned on selling you sub par audio with gimmicks.

I love bone conduction headphones. I have a pair of Shockz for when I listen to music and podcasts in public, since I’m not looking to get run over or mugged! Not the best sounding, but really useful for certain situations. The tech is getting crazy

Love my AirPods Pro for casual listening and phone calls, but when it comes to music production and stuff nothing compares to the audio technica m50x’s for sure, except maybe getting open backs for mixing is a good idea…

i love audiotechnica but if youve only tried their mx50s and use them for casual listening you gotta try other stuff like their mx40 and hifiman's he400se and beyerdynamic's dt770 and sennheiser x drop's hd 58x and even koss's ksc75s, you should really try them for normal listening and anything that isnt content-making because theyre not really that good at anything else (imo)...
dont feel forced to do this though, your current headphones are fine if you wanna keep them until they break

Personally, I’ve stuck with wired earbuds for most of my life, and have yet to regret it.
The brand I use is a pair of JLab’s Signature Buds Series in black and red, which provide pretty dang good audio for something that costs $8.00.

for me: ATH-M20xBT at home, mostly wired, ATH-SQ1TW for my phone, really good on the bus, they're basically earplugs so they block most noise pretty well when playing music. KZ ZSN Pro X iems for my ipod, they feel pretty narrow, sound wise but they do the job and they're really detailed for a pair of £20 earbuds.

I just love how my sony earbuds instead of being called like… i dunno’ “3rd gen sony earbuds” or something, they’re instead called “xf-1000xm3” the only thing that makes sense is the 3 because they’re the 3rd gen model, but no idea what does any of the other gibberish mean
