Your jar has had no connection with the outside world for two years except sunlight and temperature changes of course. But it really is remarkable that you could send your jar on a long space mission and so long as light and temperature are controlled your bladder snails would know no different. Except when they came up for air, of course, as they wouldn't float to the top as there is no top in space and in space nobody can hear snails scream. Even in the Netherlands you can't hear snails scream.
The aquatic plant life may likely die due to the lack of convection in space and the tendency for oxygen and other gases to disolve out of liquid to form their own bubbles. Though, there are definetly species in biology that could survive this unique and extreme environment. fun fact, without fans, if you were to shine an led light on a plants leaves in space, you would actually cook them because the heat radiating off the leaf would stay very local to the surface of the leaf. Though it would be very interesting to see what happened as diffusion of nutrients takes an extremely long time to the point where you could have a portion of the liquid with extrememly high concentrations of nutrients right next to a portion with no nutrient concentration. Normally nutrients would diffuse from high concentration to low, but in space, diffusion is incredibly slow.
As an ignorant American, this is news to me! Goddamm, am I haunted by the screams of our Greater Great Lakes Area Land Snail land snails 😢 How I wish they were inaudible.
That's how I cut down on cyanobacteria blooms in my fish tank by adding marimo moss balls. The cyanobacteria from my tap water has a hard time establishing because the resources are already being used by the moss balls, which are actually a kind of algae.
@123TeeMee - each bird has a slightly different niche. An interesting example of two species in the same niche are the lion and the hyena. You see behaviors like lions killing hyena pups.Eventually they will evolve to fit a slightly different niche. For example, lions might start to focus on smaller gazelles and hyenas might start to focus on bigger prey and pack hunting.
Nathaniel Schumann incest is very common in the natural world. it was very common for humans until very recently. read this article on Discover Magazine’s website: “Go Ahead, Kiss Your Cousin”
@@nates1517 The biological term is endogamy. Incest is more of a law/social relationship statement. For example, having relations between stepsiblings is incest, though it is normal reproduction in biological terms. Simple species have high tolerance to endogamy due to high number of offspring negating the culling effect of those born with defects dying en masse.

I just made my first couple ecospheres this weekend while at a lake with my family, inspired largely by this channel. They’re really fun to look at, and I’ve already spotted so many cool organisms! I hope they’re as successful as yours after 2 years!
It's always interesting to see what pops up. I have a closed terrarium in a little round bottle, and originally I planted some moss and a couple of small vascular plants in it. The moss did great, but the vascular plants all died, or so I thought. I looked at it again last week and there are some little leafy boys popping up in there. That was a big surprise. It's been sealed up for about 2 or 3 years. I can't remember which year I started it, but I remember that the bottle was a bottle of spiced rum that my cousin brought over for Christmas, and then I planted the terrarium in the spring. That one is only a 750 ml bottle and now I have a 1.75 L bottle with a similarly nice shape so I want to make another terrarium. Maybe I should make a video about it and call it Life in Bottles?
1:37 your relaxed way of describing things instead of using complicated science words to explain things is really the reason why people watch your vids.
Yo well done, the presentation on diversity vs stability was pretty relevant for some ecosphere plans I have. Also you never know with aquatic Isopods. I went like 6 months without a sighting, than saw him just chilling on the glass one day.
Perhaps the light green, almost white green algae in the low part of the jar are colonies of photosynthetic signle celled organism of some kind other-kind-of-of-single-celled-organisms-than-algea? I like when you goof - it's really charming! And I remember I saw these tiny closed ecospheres that researchers made when I was a child, that were kinda famous. They had a plant species and a species of crustacean - they were quite expensive to make. You have made a complex, self-sustaining ecosphere without a big expensive lab! That's pretty cool! 😎 I hope you'll have a lovely summer - with a looot of time to make videos! 😉 Loads of love from Denmark
This is so educational and very in line to what I've learned throughout my courses while getting my biology degree. I love this so much and seeing all the organisms in the bottle. Awesome job on this video. Love love love enjoyable easy to understand educational content! 💗💗💗
This is so cool. When you create a ecosphere and make its own ecosystem even though it's only been a couple of years, have you seen any signs of plants or animals adapt or evolve in the least little bit? The weak die and the strong survive , or the ones best suited for the ecosystem live, I know its only a few years but it's a long time for something so small. It's highly unlikely but we could very well be a ecosystem on a shelf somewhere and not even realize it, correct ? Just like our space studies have recorded over 26 different signals in the last 50 years in space that they know aren't just space noise but we dont understand the languages or signals, it's insane. We have learned so much and still know so little in reality. We could be just a speck of dust somewhere and yet we think we know so much, awesome
great explanation of the ecosystem. It confirmed what I thought would happen, but you have me hooked! I'm going to make one myself. I have a jar very similar to your huge ecosystem videos and interested to see how it progresses. Thanks for the inspiration.
Alright, so, it's like this, see... Your vids are super relaxing and hilarious! I've been subscribed for quite a while. I was curious, are you going to go into Marine Biology, Microbiology or Oceanography if you intend to go to University? What are your plans with such an interesting hobby? Also, do you keep a journal for each jar with dates of when something significant happens?
You should start an ecosphere with a jar containing a smaller jar with nothing in it, or some sort of object glued down on the inside of the larger jar, so all of the life can be easily observed in the layer between the jar and the object in the middle of it, I'm considering doing it myself and think it will be a fun project. Hope this makes sense.
