This closed ecosystem hasn't experienced darkness in 4 months!

  • This ecosphere is constantly illuminated, 24 hours a day. During the day by sunlight, at night by artificial light. This is the 4 month update on this closed ecosystem in an airtight jar. What happens with algae when there's no darkness? And how about the animals? Some animals, including the ostracods, tubifex (boogie worms) and bladder snails are reproducing like crazy. Find out what else happened with this 'always lit' ecosphere.
    Enjoy!

The year is 2134. A jar containing ancient soil and water is found in an old apartment, still connected to an outlet that somehow wasn't cut after cessation of residence. The water is foggy, greenish-bluish in hue and interspersed with large freefloating strands. Tubifex the size of small earthworms weave through the soil, aerating it for the stiff algal stalks that grow from it, tufts of strands dotting their surface. Small snails perch on these stalks, catching passing ostrocods with sticky nets of slime cast within their long tentacles. Tardigrades are also visible among the crustaceans, writhing slowly through the water catching and eating whatever they can grab. After intense deliberation among the party, the decision is made to place the jar back on the large plastic box it sat on, leaving it for the next wanderers to marvel at.

Imagine this jar but in 30 years.
"The Elder ones speak of a God. They created this world we are in, apparently the world before God was cut in half, with half of it being God's domain and the other the Devil's."
"This God has blessed us with eternal light, for darkness is sin. I never seen our God, but he isn't like us, he's thousands of times our size, with tentacles that split in 5 coming from his sides. There also appears to have been others inhabitants in our word, but they've meddled with darkness and sin, thus receiving God's wrath."
"I'm afraid. I have seen darkness with my eyes. When I sleep I see the Devil's world, infinitaly larger than our's, with small lights, but rather then on the Border, they are in the ceiling. Though more plentful than our's they are absorbed by darkness, It's simply beautifull"
"I think the Oracles know what I've become. The Elders called me, I'm trully afraid, not only that I will die, and live ib total darkness for my sins, but also that I may have doomed my kind for my mistake."
    "Please forgive me God."

I think in constant darkness it would do okay. My grandfather had a jar of pond water and put it in his closet and forgot about it for multiple years. When he found it again there was a big snail in it! He opened it up but when he touched it it broke because there wasn’t enough calcium. I think you should give it a go! It would also be interesting to give one like a hour of sunlight a day and see if it adapts to live with limited amount of light. Anyways, it’s fine if you don’t! Keep up the great content man!

I've read (in comments on this channel) that springtails can do fine in total darkness if you give them activated charcoal. With a water based ecosphere anything still living after a while would either live off of what was already in the jar (decaying plantmatter) or live off what little light does reach it whenever you open the door.

As far as an always dark ecosphere, it might appear dead, but I have a bottle of water that my friend sent me from the Han River in Seoul, and it was sitting on my bookshelf for many years, apparently dead. Not in total darkness, but not getting much light anyway. I moved it to the top of the bookshelf, where it got more light, and some algae started growing in it. I think I'm going to put it by the window to see what happens.

Interesting point about the darkness one: I finally decided to check on a fully sealed yogurt cup I had beside one of my fish tanks (it had some pond plants in it before I added them to my fish tank) and I have never seen so much microfauna. More than my "intentional" ecospheres hilariously enough, considering this thing was probably in pure darkness for at least 2 weeks. No idea how long it'll last.

I just love your videos and your channel. I have a project I began last year in early October, using a fish bowl with watch glass on top. This keeps the entire ecosystem enclosed, allowing light from any angle and is loaded with chert, igneous rocks, river sand/dirt along with water from the river and moss from around my home. Life was stagnant for several months due to the short day and colder temperatures on the window sill. Now that it has warmed up, I will have to do a video on its surprising healthy state. I will give you credit for the idea and instruct others to check out your channel as well.

This guy is quite literally doing an experiment in artificial evolution. Honestly would be interesting to see how a closed off system like this evolved over like hundreds of years with weird variables that couldn't be done naturally in nature (though I know humans aren't the best with keeping up the same thing for hundreds of years across many generations)

The ecosphere would eventually become anaerobic since no photosynthesis can take place. And the only stuff that can live in anaerobic environments is some microbes.

@@Alsemenor all ecosystems need a source of energy. so unless you get a hydrothermal vent going in your jar or find some other way to inject energy your organisms can use you'll need to use light as the energy source. I think the higher populations are due to higher oxygenation and algae matter.
I think you could do a 24/7 dark video but you will have to cherry pick your life forms. Anaerobic organisms will be a good choice. Maybe marine fungi.
You could attempt to create a cave ecosphere. Wont be the natural thing of course. Maybe try putting something bioluminescent in there?

So, my not-so-sealed ecospheres that we have has turned into a source of not only education, but nourishment for education.
We have reared Triops many times before, but this time, decided to add some water from one of our lake/pond jars.
Needless to say they were alive and bright for many hours sucking all the daphnia, larvae, and other wee creatures into oblivion.
I love the creatures we have in jars, but...since the main focus at this point is trying different kits of triops, and what the best are...this is a good boost in protein so they aren't interested in each-other. Always works.
    Keep up the wonderful reports!

Would be fascinating to experiment with closed ecosystems which are exposed to unnatural but life suportive conditions in order to see how the species adapt and even are forced to evolve. I'm talking about conditions such as pH variations, hypoxia, hyperoxia, low light… but gradually changing its values (intensity) for giving the flora and the fauna time enough to get adapted

It's like a never ending party in that jar lol. Have you also considered color blind glasses? I know there was some type of glasses that allowed color to be seen through them. I believe they are called EnChroma. Also, love your videos! You inspired me to make my own closed ecosystems! I currently have a couple jars. I actually raised some tadpoles in them (which I released after they developed a bit so they'd be a bit bigger so other critters wouldn't eat them for a snack). Just wanna say also keep up the great work!
