Creating a Seasonal Wetland Ecosphere! │INSTANT LIFE and RARE Copepods!

- In this video we create an ecosphere from a Seasonal Wetland. These habitats are known for flooding during the winter months and then dry up during the summer months.
Due to the seasonal changes within this habitat they tend to support greater biodiversity and specialized species. The aquatic species go into dormancy every summer when their water source dries out. Adult organisms and eggs hide within the soil. They then wait for rain to flood the grassland and create pools.
I was very surprised to see Epibiotic Algae growing on some of the copepods. Being able to capture such a thing on video is something I didn't think I'd ever have the opportunity to do. The relationship between epibiotic organisms and their host are poorly understood and rarely studied, which is why I think it's so cool to have some in this ecosphere.
There was a lot of other organisms I failed to capture for the video. I also believe new organisms will pop up in future update videos. The sheer number of species I've seen is astounding! This video was a mammoth task to create. If you liked it show me some love in the comments! :)
I really like your videos. My favorite part is that you don’t talk, instead you write. It makes it a lot more calming.

It always has its charm when they don't talk. First one that come to my mind is "Yrmir". The coolest terraria TH-camr back then, he never talked and I loved it.
I think the awesome ambient (and non ambient) tunes are what really sets it of
@@Jon.A.Scholt yes
You should come back to the same site when it is actually flooded, make another jar, and compare the two!
Yeah to see if there would be any significant differences, hope he sees this comment.

Cercyon analis: help, I am slowly drowning and dying of suffocation due to too much duckweed! Help!
Jartopia: "They're quite clumsy and a lot of fun to watch"
Do you think it was actually drowning?
@@morpher728 They're adapted to carry air with them on their underbellies. Why would that have that adaptation to survive in water if they drown?
You can see it still has a lot of air on its belly.
Water mite carrying clam: “I just think they’re neat.”
I can't get enough of your ecospheres. It's fascinating to me how much life there is in a few scoops of earth. Thanks.
*Shows beetle*
Oh noh, they're all going to get eaten!
*Beetles proceed to struggle with basic tasks*
Never mind, those are scavengers for a reason, that clam-lifting mite is more scary.

@Azedenkae Echevien he just thinks clams are neat

Being able to have a tiny universe in your home to watch teeming with life is just about one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. I'm going to get into this and try to make one of my own. The most exciting part will likely be trying to identify all the different species in the jar. Can't wait! Thank you for turning me on to this!
This popped up in my feed one day and I was mesmerized. This is so fascinating and I like that you don't speak but rather educate your audience with information on the screen. I hope you continue to make these video and that your channel continues to grow!
Keep the calming music. I love watching and listening it actually helps with my anxiety. Inspired now to make my own.
Started doing this myself love the ideas you have!
Where do you get the organisms from? Do they already live within the soil?
Do you put the jar in the sunlight or do you have a special lamp to put it under? If so, what kind of lamp do you use?
@@Debbiexddd you can put them in the sunlight, but try not to put them in direct sunlight otherwise it can kill the organisms. You can try any lamp really that's rated for indoor plant growing, just try to place it high enough from the jar so it doesn't overheat and kill the organisms inside the jar.
@@EXTOLANT-alt Yes. From my research try to get as much decaying stuff as possible, and rich soil. For example: leaf matter in bodies of water, or nutrient rich soil. (really black/dark soil)
This is an EXTREMELY underrated channel!!!
Maybe the mite and clam are friends and it's hitching a ride
The content of your channel is unique and rare for you to follow from Algeria 🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿❤❤
And from Germany🖒

I've started one of my own too now because of you ^-^ One month in and it's looking a little bare compared to yours but the plants are really starting to show up now and I can't wait to see how it turns out
I can't believe how beautiful yours turn out
It's mind-boggling how much life is contained in a couple scoops of soil.
He hand picks what goes in there aha
@@tkz28 it doesn't change how much life there was in a couple scoops of soil

@@tkz28 how do you hand pick animals less than a millimetre long? How can you determine they were hand picked? It's completely reasonable to assume this was all in the soil he picked, there's no reason to think otherwise lol
@@jacks559 I’m Fuckin with you man idk if he does or doesn’t , but odds are he hand picked some animals for more interesting videos nothing wrong with that
I'm so glad TH-cam randomly decided to reccomend your videos. Your stuff if so cool and beautiful, and your videos are so calming (and informative!). You reignited my love of terrariums, lol
So are you going to evolve these creatures to the next level, or just buff their stats?
If he buffs their stats before evolving he will be able to buff them again, making them unbeatable on the long run
Happened upon your channel by accident but it was a wonderful happenstance!!! The music is very therapeutic and you provide a ton of educational content as well. Loved, subscribed, alerted, and will continue to watch!!!
This is relatable and true
this guy spoils his fanbase
That nickname 👌
This ecosphere, like all your ecospheres, is so unique and interesting! How life went into full blossom by adding water is simply amazing. Organisms hatching out of dried eggs like Sea Monkeys was so fascinating!
hi everyone and Jartopia.. i became a big fan of your site and have now 5 ecospheres witch i really enjoy watching all day trough. Thank u sooo much for your enthuisiasm and your very good videos.
This guy played Spore too much
I actually did lmao!
Me too xD
@@Jartopia Same! Still do!
@@Jartopia I love spore

Absolutely captivating! Great photography, calming music, text instead of voice. Instantly relaxes me. Thank you!
I love how simple all of these look yet so complex when you actually look closer. This one is really pretty (of course lots of them are). I love the duckweed. I've been thinking about trying one.
Upload more if possible pls.
Thanks!
Love ur channel keep growing!!!
I'm really impressed how life in a jar seems to evolve. Love the video.
Another brilliant video as always. Good job.
I always get happy when I watch your videos.
I've been working on a few jars of my own, in a desert environment there's not a lot of wetlands but I've managed to find a few! It's a wonderful passtime
Love these videos. Usually watch them in bed. So relaxing.
All i have to say is
Your vids are satisfying and with a music background which makes us focus on what we are watching!
This is a very well put together video! I can’t wait for an update on this!!
Just a question, the Jar is a normal jar, but what type of light you use? Led one or low energy fluorescent, and what temperature in °K?
Thanks (or tanks, in this case) a lot
Somone please answer this man for I have the same question
Me as well
I have seen other answers before - no extra light is needed, just that of the sun. So a windowsill is fine. I think Jartopia just uses the light so we can see them in the video, but for normal use you don't need any form of light other than daylight
@@Peteman81 Thank you good sir
Wow, this is one of your best ecospheres.
This is brain massage!
And i love how much you know about the different types and species. Small documentaries.
No wonder you got most of 100K followers!
Keep it up!
There is something very soothing about watching your videos.
Such an inspirational video! I found your channel last night and today I'm heading to the woods to start one wet and one dry habitat. I live in northern Europe aswell (Sweden) so your instructions are easy to apply.
Those spotted ostracods are so freakn cute!
The mere idea that this dude put some dirt and water in a cup, and nurtured it into a fully functioning ecosystem rich with multiple completely different types of aquatic creatures, even if some are similar. I love your videos man and I really want to get into it, but I think this is enough to cure my curiosity on this stuff for now.
Amazing biodiversity in this one, my favorite video of yours so far! Thanks for sharing
These jars are absolutely amazing and very unique! The amount of life in them is fascinating.
Wow - I'm truly amazed after watching these videos. Nicely done.
this channel!!!! I am the calmest person alive omgggg I LOVE IT
fantastic shot of that beetle.. The way the bubbles look like mirrors!
Another beautiful video
Absolutely love your music choices for your videos. Thank you
what amazes me is not just the larger more visible organisms swimming around, but those tiny tiny small specks in the water, 1000s of them all living
I love these videos. The process is straight up meditative.
I made a couple tiny ecospheres because of you. :) One from rainwater in an empty plant pot and one from a shallow part of a pond, and they are so different and incredible! I can see some of the microorganisms with my naked eye, and there’s even some macro-organisms in the pond one, like a worm and a tiny shrimp looking friend. it’s all so cool
I also really enjoy watching your videos. I am interested to share this with my family and do a couple of these with my children. Thank you for sharing these!
The mite carrying the clam was so adorable 🥺
Man, this is so calming, I'm happy I found this! It's also very interesting, I might make one of my own and start taking notes as a hobby!
Thank you so much for creating a beautiful little living world within our world. I love the music, it reminds me of Machinarium by Amanita Design .Lots of love to you!
It amazes me that you can zoom in to a microscopic organism, and all around it is a swarm of even smaller organisms.
It is absolutely incredible how a clump of mud is teeming with so much life.
Love your channel!
Amaaaazing channel! I love the idea and just the feeling of it all, even the music with your videos. Soo cool! Thanks.
Awesome job! Keep up the great projects!
I’m thinking that the critters are green because they’ve been in an environment where lots of chlorophyll was being produced when the area dried out. Open field, lots of sunshine-> green microbiota. It’s fascinating the Interconnectedness of the whole system. I’m really glad that I found this channel. I’m stuck inside the house due to health issues and I’ve been going nuts. You have inspired me to try some new adventures! I have three outdoor ponds in livestock watering tanks but there’s very limited vegetation in them yet. I’d like to get some cold hardy aquatic plants in them to increase their biodiversity. Then I could build ecospheres to bring inside for the winter.
You are doing very beautiful and interesting work. The music with the visuals and quiet delivery of information is so appreciated. I get lost in these little universes, full of life- so very wonderful
Edit: it all works together so well. I get the information that’s interesting but it’s all so relaxing and surreal at this perspective. It’s like sharing the same level as these tiny but important and fascinating living things
I love these videos mainly because of the creature/microscopic science that I learn from here. To be honest you need to make more of these videos and I hope that one day you will become a famous scientist. :)
Thank you. I have a new video coming out this week.

I love this kind of stuff. A jar of water is a universe unto itself. Marvels happen constantly all around us, if you look for them. Thanks for giving us a closer look.
Edit: My favorite species from this video is definitely the clam.
Another great video! Thank you.
Just simply Amazing! You inspire me
The macro shots are awesome

I love it when it is ecosphere time!
So inspiring! Going to try this too!
great observations, that mite with the clam :0
Make a fantasy style ecosystem... have a floating island ( using an aerated stone which floats ) and wrap the island material around with a small opening in the center or side like a pond or whatever to access the water underneath. then have an underwater ecosystem too.
This videos make me feel calm
I'm curious what those tiny undulating creatures to the left of the white-lipped ramshorn (4:25) are. Their motion is pretty cool. 😀
Awesome videos just subscribed to your channel so relaxing to watch before sleep with the beautiful music also really interesting ecosystem and species
New subscriber. Great music to go along with your fantastic content. Keep up the good work 😊
This type of stuff is so dope
awesome vids man keep it up, love to see the alien friends.
Wow beautiful!
I didn't knew i'd be seeing micro organisms mating in these videos,
The algae you see at 9:30 some of those little green specks are definitely some type of euglena species. You can see some spinning like a 'strange' corkscrew shape moving through the water.
great vid loved it !!...peace out
This is a great one!
I never knew there were other nerds like me who did this. I feel validated.
I just found your videos and this is so fascinating! Especially this water ecosphere, it interests me a bit more than those of dry landscapes. I really want to try this myself! (Maybe if you collect the materials during spring you can see different larvae develop for summer?? That would be awesone but maybe it doesn't work the same in a jar😆 I don't know I'm very new to this haha
WoW this video is so interesting !
Thank you, i really enjoy your work! Love the choice of music too, Bon Iver fan?
I’ve watched a few of your videos and I’m so jealous of you being able to find those tiny clams! I’d love to find some here in the us for my aquarium!
How do I learn more about the flora and fauna at this level? Are there any good books you can refer. Simply amazing!
Did you ever find out what the Mite was doing with the Claim, great videos!..Very relaxing to watch!..
It is one of this channels many unsolved mysteries. 😂
Nature is incredible :)
Your videos are wondrous teeming with amazing forms of life. Where do you get your jars? What size do you use for the long-term ones?
The mechanism for dispersal of some clam and mussle species is that the larva attach to the gills of fish, becoming almost a parasite until they are large enough to release and attach to the substrate. That's my guess for what happened to the mite.
