- Spanish police have called off the search for missing teenager Jay Slater in Tenerife, according to reports.
The 19-year-old, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, disappeared after setting off to walk back to his accommodation on the holiday island on June 17.
Former Met Police detective Mike Neville joins Talk’s Kevin O’Sullivan to discuss this further.

Exactly I lay money on it and she probably went and picked him up!! And that cctv footage was apparently a day after he went missing and she was screaming you didn’t say you was gonna stab him!! Then she screamed ohh fuck I’m sorry what do I do then she screams jay jay but makes no attempt to go after him as he limps away.. and now she’s nowhere to be seen and gone very quiet!! Maybe the police have her… but they are real tight lipped and don’t give nothing away!! And I do believe that this is definitely over drugs and that jay got so high on the drugs he was meant to be selling and then went and lost the bag with the rest of the drugs and whatever money he had made!! He really messed up and we all know that’s not gonna end well… she already started to distance herself from him when she reported him as missing she claims she left the event early and went back to the apartment on her own as she was tried and it wasn’t until the morning she got a call from him saying he was lost and he then probably told her that he had lost the bag with whatever drugs and money he had left!! The police ain’t idiots and she’s in this up to her eyeballs i think the mum knows as well but they can’t just hand the money over

Apparently the beach video was footage from a TV show from 2008 and was shown as a witness appeal backthen. So they've probably researched it and found that out themselves. Some report called Isla has supposedly said that video has nothing to do with Jay

Why give a press conference if there's nothing to be said. The British police give conferences and generally say nothing. They have completed a search on the basis of the information provided. He wasn't found. End of story.
Yes, but they should, at the very least, have placed his picture and details on EVERY lamp-post in the entire area, to see if someone comes forward.

In these circumstances, it'd be reasonable to suspect a crime had been committed but the Spanish police don't seem to want to go there....for some reason.
@@johnparry3475 in my experience, the Spanish authorities don’t mess about. They’ve done all they can so far. I agree with you. Approximately 12 years ago on holiday in Andalusia, we were attending a village fiesta. We lost sight of our young son during a foam party. We immediately notified one of the many Guardia Civil and they instantly locked down all of the surrounding roads/access points. They were extremely concerned and very efficient. Thankfully we located our son. He was safe but scared. We were so grateful for their professionalism and their swift response.

When a woman in bristol went missing the police and then the press jumped in and vilified an innocent elderly school teacher for weeks and essentially accused him of the crime, No doubt the Spanish police have no wish to allow the British media to do the same to these these guys who they've ruled out.

I'm Spanish and I can confirm our police NEVER holds press conferences (especially when the case is still ongoing). I always found super weird how the American police would hold press conferences as soon as a crime is committed, potentially giving away important information to the culprit, even if theythink they are not giving away any key detail. I've always found it too "Hollywoodesque" and pointless, and, as you brought with your example, it may even lead to publicly point the finger on an innocent person.

Instead of slagging off the Spanish police why aren't the British media raising questions over his supposed friend Lucy's statement and the speed with which she started the go fund me page. She's hiding something. Why did Brad wait almost a fortnight before claiming he spoke to Jay? This clearly is not a straightforward missing person case.
That was the first instance of Brad, the friend who apparently witnessed a slip, telling anybody about it? That was only a couple of days ago? Are you sure it wasn't just the first time he spoke about it on camera? He must have made a police statement pretty soon after Jay was declared missing.

The parents have done nothing, they want folk to help search but they can't haul their arses about to go search and the dad couldn't answer a simple question about the UK police going over there to help and he was completely rude and ignorant and just walked away without answering. I agree. Even if they couldn’t search the hillsides through being unfit, they could have hired/borrowed a gazebo and provided refreshments/snacks for those bothering to search. Aren’t the fire service part-time volunteers? Spaniards aren’t thick and I’m sure many are aware of how much money has been pouring into the go-fund-me.

As someone who has been into true crime for the past 15 years, the possibilities of what happened to this young man are endless, and to be honest, nothing will shock me anymore. He could wander off and died of exposure, but he could as well be kidnapped by drug dealers or simply hiding in plain sight.
From what I've seen, there have been a lot of people that went missing from there recently, and none of those people got media exposure like this young man.
I think police did what they could, and I think they simply don't believe he is there or was there in the first place.

What a disgusting report by these two slagging of all the Spanish rescue workers some which were local volunteers. These rescue workers are covering thousands of square meters of rough terrain. The UK Police couldn’t find Nicola Bulley in a stream only meters away from where she went missing! Oh and of course they went on TV saying she had a drink problem! Give me the Guardia any day . The police actually had to come out and say that the two men they interviewed are not suspects and are not suspected of any wrongdoing... Not that they're irrelevant.
I keep hearing leading language such as 'they took Jay to a remote air bnb'. He went willingly, he wasn't abducted by them and he had met them days before. Not total strangers.
So many people are adamant that they had something to do with it and a police have come out and said they didn't.
Why not more focus on Lucy, she's the person who claimed to have been the last person to see him. She left the country but no one's had accused her of fleeing or evading the authorities.
Why did his friend come out so many days later with crucial information? Those are the people to be focusing on.
I'm of the opinion that the police have their suspicions and are working in the background behind what we're seeing have had a close eye on the family and friends since the beginning.

Two things: I'm from Spain and our police NEVER hold press conferences, especially if the case is ongoing. It has nothing to do with Jay Slater not being Spanish or anything. Also, when they announced on Friday they would be inviting all volunteers that wanted to join during that weekend it was OBVIOUS that, after more than 10 days, that'd the last weekend they would be actively looking for the missing person. You don't need to be a genius to foresee that was happening, since there was almost no chance for him to be alive (if he was in that area). And lastly, I've seen in the Spanish news that the police actually explained at the spot they were stopping the search, why and how. I can guess the British media loves to make drama out of everything and they've decided to ignore the fact that it was actually explained on site, the same way the've decided to ignore all the missing person's past when they talk about the case. Absolute jokers.

Maybe the Guardia Civil in Tenerife,who no doubt know what they are doing on the island have not "gave up" because there not bothered. If I was lost there I would have total faith in them searching for me. The talk of tik tokers and you tubers etc getting in the way of them is ridiculous. Jays Dad appealed the other day for volunteers which included social media types to help in the search and six people, to there credit turned up to help even though the main stream media have said repeatedly that these armchair detectives have flown out and are disrupting the search efforts. They (Spanish police) might have thought like most others,why a 51 year old British experienced hiker with all the equipment etc was found by chance whilst searching for Jay. You would think with him being so experienced and being missing he would have more media interest than a lad who has been partying and phoned his mate and said he was lost but was trying to get back. He said he cut his leg,has anything been mentioned about sniffer dogs picking up a scent? The vastly experienced local police cannot come out and blatantly say this is not right so they have done the only other thing they can without saying so. I truly hope he is ok and found well whatever the reason for his disappearance.

Theres a video going on TH-cam of three men on a beach,one man is being hold then in the back ground you hear lucy saying god have you stabbed him,jay jay am sorry then you see a man walking away limping badly. if that video is real lucy and the friends needs to be investigated further i believe they know what happened to jay.

They wasn't the last people to see Jay. He was seen by a woman as he was walking theough the valley. He asked her where the bus was....she didn't mention seeing 2 black men. Yiu haven't researched it properly!

Imo it’s not uncommon for unsavoury people to pay off the police. That makes the most sense to me why no real investigation and it was dropped so quick. The island is a party island and would be a major draw for dealers. Now someone has found a pair of sunglasses very similar to jays glasses by where his last phone ping was. Imo he got away from the villa because something dodgy was going on, he wanted a quick exit, didn’t want to wait for the bus and went in the opposite direction because he knew if he was found to have left the villa they would head back in the direction he originally came. From. Imo the cafe lady has innocently possibly when asked has told them what way he went, she seen him walk in the opposite direction Imo it was dodgy from the beginning, lucy and Brad arnt telling the whole truth and the two men caught up with him. Imo Lucy needs to be quizzed by the British police.
It hasn't been dropped "so quick". They were searching for a, potentially, alive young man. All the police know is what his friend Lucy told them: the missing person phoned her to state he got lost, he was very thirsty and had hurt his leg and his phone battery was about to die. They have no evidence that he's been kidnapped or that any crime against him has been committed. After two weeks it's impossible that he can still be alive if he's lost in the wild, so there's no point in wasting all those resources in recovering the body of a missing adult. I know it's brutal but that's the reality of things. Now all police can do is having this case in the background in case someone comes forward and gives new information to work with.
Imo you are a great loss to New Scotland Yard and criminal investigations in general. Your insight and powers of deduction are amazing. Whatever your current employment status, please give it up and take over this investigation. I am certain you could solve it in a matter of minutes. Sherlock Holmes must be green with envy.

The fact that they found an unrelated British tourists body suggests they have already put more work into this than they usually would when a tourist goes missing.

Why did Jay go with these men and why not run him back the next day…???

Tourism is the mainstay of Tenerife's economy, therefore the authorities are going to downplay his disappearance completely.
Of course they want tourists but not necessarily drug fuelled ,drunken youngsters....it must be a headache because they have to deal with the backlash and the drug cartels ....what a job !
Nobody's downplaying anything. I'm from Spain and our police never hold press conferences nor do any Hollywood-style media drama like they like to do in America and apparently, in the UK. I actually think they spent extra time actively searching for him given the circumstances, and it was precisely because he's British. Had this been a 19 year-old young Spaniard they wouldn't have looked for him for so long.

I don't understand it. There are infinite policing resources and endless money available to continue the search. As this is the only issue that policing have to deal with they should carry on as long as it takes. They are still searching for the only other person ever to go missing (daughter of some partying health professionals).
A friend of mine, who was a keen and able Fellwalker, went missing on a mountain walk in Scotland.
There was a very thorough search for him, undertaken by the Mountain Rescue to no avail, and the whole business became one of those mysterious disappearances, which happen from time to time.
However, some considerable time later, his remains turned up, in an area which had already been investigated.
This young man will turn up either alive or dead, hidden in some shallow cover, or ravine. If dead, there will be a Post Mortem, which may indicate whether or not he died through some violence caused by human agency.
Apparently there is ‘Crowdfunding’ money available for a continuing search. That may turn up something……

Cannot fathom why this is getting so much attention. There are missing kids all over the UK RIGHT NOW. Join your local missing persons page and its FULL of mothers and fathers despairing at how little the police seem to care. Communities organising their own searches. But one violent teenager goes 'missing' abroad and its wall to wall coverage for weeks???? Can you imagine how it must feel to be looking for your kid, alone, and seeing this EVERY SINGLE DAY?

Who knows the truth? I want some more details regarding the building and why it was a focus , if he was on the rocks why the cctv of the football location the following day? And regarding the go fund me money must be fully accounted, it doesn’t cost 32k to stay 2 weeks or even 4 weeks, so what happened to the 27k remaining, for all we know this was a scam so little info is being given

Disgusting reporting regarding the police here. Why is up to them to go put posters up when theres been a lot of friends and family been flown out to help and a lot of ££££ donated on go fund me to help them do so.

The police there are pretty great (after being horrible at the gardia locale for 3days, they kept saying they needed an offisial intepretor even though we speak English both (im obviously not English), I slept outside, in a cave in the mountains one night, it was not exactly safe , they suddenly referred me to policia nationale. I walked there, 3 hours, I didnt have money for taxi or anything. But they at policia nationale got me in touch with my countrys embassy/council or what its called and they gave me food and i could have a shower. They was supernice. And I was driven to the airport by Red Cross that harassed med for : How do you come from one of the richest countries in the world to Spain, we have 6 million unemployed?
