- Selvedge denim in all it’s raw, unwashed glory. As much as it’s about history, about quality, about craftsmanship and about style. If we’re honest, it’s mostly about fades. To get those high contrast whiskers and honeycombs means going for long stretches of time between washes. Not washing anything for 6 months can be a stinky affair. Raw denim jeans, just like any other piece of clothing, it gets dirty. It gets stinky. And at times it can get downright antisocial. But over the years I have come up with a few hacks that can see you to the six-month mark, and probably beyond, without getting too funky.

I have a 3 pair rotation. That seems to help a lot with overall wear and most importantly smell!

White Vinegar and water in a mist bottle. Lightly spray in the nether area and hang dry inside out every other day.
Can't do it. I hate the smell of vinegar. But I have heard it is amazing stuff for cleaning.
I've used this for my raw jeans
Brush off with a soft bristle brush
Mist with disinfectant spray not too much
Then hang outside for 4 hours in shade during the daytime
The disinfectant is not a bad move... You don't have any issue with spotting?
@@CeeAreDee I only use aerosol dissenting spray like lysol and mist a few quick sprits so far so good

I find a few drop of teatree oil in a spray bottle of watter works good to disinfect and sanitize when the denim gets stinky.

@@CeeAreDee Add a tiny drop of dish soap to emulsify the oil. Add vinegar for extra punch.
I was stuck on one type of regular levis jeans for 20 years. Never try fit in shop just coming to shop saay hello také my type and size. Always wear them till was desteoyed and after that buy new one. I always wash my jeans when was dirty. Cca one time in 3 weeks. Or after big party 😆😆😆.I always have a very nice fade on my jeans. After start levis put this elastic shit to my jeans (apologies to lycra or what the name is fans) i switch to selvedge denim basically by the accident with no education about it. And i wash them as normaly outlet jeans before. Fade coming after time always. But i have new BDD on the way from summer sale now, maybe i let them without wash longest time and try something new. Btw about the brush is use regular horsehair boot brush for my clothing not only for jeans. Work well too. (but one for clothing and one for boots oc 😉)

I just fold and put them in my closet on top of each other and literally do nothing else. In this sense Im kind of a god, because my bottoms are never dirty, smell nasty nor do I blow my crotch, although I wear them to work, where I sweat pretty heavily tho. Same with shoes: I never get any heel drag or lose stars on the front part of my outsole on sneakers. I think I got blessed

Late to this party but thought it interesting you stated you can go longer between washes before that first wash. First time I have heard someone state this. I have read, not specifically about raw denim, that starch coats the fibers and can act as a barrier to dirt, or in other words, dirt will tend to attach to the starch coating and wash out with the starch. Hmm...
If I want to remove odors and not wash I use a garment steamer. A carryover from the couple of years in my past when I had a job that required me to wear suits to work every day. Definitely did not clean suits very often, only when actually soiled. A garment steamer was recommended to freshen and remove odors between dry cleanings and to extend the life of the suit.
I am even later to the party. I wonder if using CRYSTAL mineral deo spray+ starch and Iron after will help after the first wash haha

You're very right... I have been a little blinkered with the denim lately. Have some other videos in mind where I expand on the qualities of denim in other garments. But this week I think I will look into leather jackets.
I use antibacterial fabric refresher spray on the inside only. Used uvery other day.
Last yeat I was able to wear my Noble Jeans for 180 straight days until heavy rain flooded my house and I had to wash them. Even then, they´re starting to look great after 200 days of wear.
Damn, that is bad luck. Hope the place is back to normal now
And.... shower/bathe daily. Most of the odors coming from clothing is from the wearer. In addition, people seem to be immune from the smells of their own funk. If you don't trust your own sniffer, ask a friend for an objective opinion. I agree with airing outside, and would add... turn them inside out for airing.

I once heard to spray the cheapest Vodka you can get inside the jeans an hang them outside when its warm. The alcohol binds the smell and takes it with it when the alcohol evaporates. It works fine.
Dont wear your raw denim one and a half year daily. Even in summer. It is a hard task. Believe me.
Haha. Been there done that. 18 months and 4 continents. They were nasty by the time I washed them.
Hang over a clothes horse every night... and outside once a week... works a treat!

i bought unsanforized jeans which is fit me perfectly.. i'm afraid to wash them due expected shrinkage.. so right now i only hang it with good airflow and just apply antibacterial spray when needed.. of coz i the spray have some good smell. oh yeah, i lived in hot and humid climate

They will stretch back out to original size and some fabrics will stretch past that ie. Oni oR PBJ
I wash them around the 50 - 60 actual wear mark, unless they get really dirty that then I wash them if they smell or I cannot remove the localized spots.
I also hang them every day after use

Just getting into raw denim, my first pair haven't started to smell yet but the jacket i bought started stinking after only a few weeks (I sweat a lot, like an abnormal amount) I have this stuff called "on your toes" its an odorless powder I use in all my boots/shoes that works great to keep the stink out. I took a tiny bit and dissolved it in about a half cup of water and i soaked the inside of the armpits with the water, i was worried it would leave a white crusty ring around the pits (like the deodorant ring thats bound to form eventually) but there is no visible residue and the smell is almost completely gone and in conjunction with hanging in the sun periodically the smell has stayed gone since. I certainly wouldn't try this with an entire pair of jeans but maybe in the crotch/ass area if they start to get bad?
For the jackets or shirts and I guess t shirts as well I can really recommend a product called nuud. It’s a deo that’s based on silver oxide rather than aluminium oxide. So no yellow stains. It’s amazing stuff. I’ve not had any issues since starting

spritz/dust a little baking soda inside in those funcky locations (crotch & pits) after each wear while they air dry.

As someone who is watching this video from Mumbai, India where it never goes below 26 degrees. Here are a few pointers,
1. Never washing your denim - You will be lonely in your life. Even your mum will disown you.
2. Washing your jeans every 6 months - You will be lonely in your life.
3. Washing your jeans in 3 months - You will be alone.
4. Washing your jeans every month - You will get a few friends who have lost their sense of smell.
5. Washing after 4 wears - You will have friends, dates and peace of mind

I think ironing or steaming also helps to get them smell less.
ive been wearing mine pretty heavily for about a month now. when im not wearing them i hang them and have an air cleaner under the leg holes to promote circulation since i cant put them outside. hopefully i can wear them for a year before washing
Good plan, lots of ventilation. Good luck getting to the year mark. The fades will be amazing.
I wear 15.7oz Momotaro's in a hot and humid country like Singapore where the temperatures are always above 30*C. I wear them hard and I wear them everyday except for Sunday. I hang them up with the fly open every night outside in the balcony and for a full day on Sundays and let them get some sun. Never had a problem with stinking ever.
What u r equally saying is this: I wear my winter coat when the temperature is 30 degrees.For the sake of sanity..why would anyone wear a 15 ounce or whatever u called it in a hot tropical climate.
@@TuneinR Lolol it is not the same thing as wearing a winter coat. Denim is a very breathable fabric and once broken in is insanely comfortable despite the weight. But haha if it's not your thing then it's just not your thing man that's all I can say.

@Tony I am from the tropics but lived in a temperate zone.So i know what I am talking about.Wearing a thick jean in hot temperature is uncomfortable. Just because people are doing it in Indonesia is not to say it is right and u should do it as well.Whenever u come to the temperate zone,i will love to see u with a t shirt in winter.
@@TuneinR wearing trousers made of a winter coat would be the same as wearing a winter coat. Wearing jeans, is the same as wearing a denim jacket.

Great tips. Does the weight of tje denim affect fades? Will lighter jeans fade faster than heavy denim or vice versa? I only own one pair and those are the 21.5oz bravest. Its going to start warming up so I was looking to buy a lighter weight for the summer days. Was just curious if weights of the denim fades faster than other weights
Heavier weight denim tends to crease more than lighter weight with generally results higher contrast fades. The rate at which your jeans fade is going to have more to do with the dying process done to the yarns rather than the weight of the fabric.
The lght denim tends to wear more evenly cause there are less creases. Check out this vid I did on it.

Hi, I'm fairly new to raw denim and have been thinking of trying a mixture of talcum powder with baking soda inside a coffee filter then tied up then leaving it inside my pants while not in use to absorb the smell. Do you think it would work?
Interesting thought... To be honest I really have no idea. You would smell of coffee tho... no bad thing!
@vince, I'm spraying my 505 (dark wash, not selvedge) with baking soda solution (1 teaspoon in a 500 mL spray bottle) twice a month. I'm on my 5th month now of daily wear in a tropical country without washing, & it doesn't smell. They said jeans need water so the fabric will be hydrated, hence I used baking soda solution & not the powder only. I don't know if this will work in raw denim though because I'm still experimenting this method.

i find that if you don't wash your jeans they break easily due to lack of water i decided to wash it monthly or so. My dog and cat runs away at the smell

i'd love to be a denim head but i live in a 3rd world country and sweating is the norm. hot doesn't begin to describe my country. i tried doing this back in college (over 20 years ago) and man, my jeans and shorts stank no matter what i did.

Who have tried spraying their jeans with baking soda solution?
I would worry about it leaving white stains. And it’s quite gritty. Might add to the wear of the fabric.
@@CeeAreDee I've been spraying my jeans inside out twice a month with 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a 500 mL spray bottle & hang them under the sun. Until now my Levi's 505 doesn't smell bad (& I see no stains from using the baking soda, I don't feel gritty) even though I've been using my pants daily for 5 months in a tropical country (I'm planning to wash this jeans on the 6th month & continue to use it for another 6 months, I don't know what fade I'll get with this jeans since this is only dark wash & not selvedge denim). I'm experimenting this method & I'm going to apply it once I buy my 1st ever selvedge jeans (& I'm hoping it will not smell bad because of the baking soda)..

If they're smelly, turn them inside out and put in the sunshine.
That works super well but at one point a wash is needed.

Stop using your jeans as a napkin or dish cloth. Airing inside out in the sun (UV rays kills bacteria). Oh and for eventual washing do try to make your own eco washing liquid using Alep soap (lots of very easy recipies), works wonders!

Jaja I am from Guayaquil Ecuador. Is hard but I try to wash the jeans once per month because of the hot weather, and if it rains there is no way you can wear your jean without washing it. Greetings

TBH i am starting to go with the guy from Resolute denim in Japan...Wash yer jeans when you want...stop trying to pretend you are some fucking Hells Angel or bad ass when ye are actually an accountant or Graphic designer...It is just ridiculous posturing and cosplay for the most part.
Anyhoo, got 2 new pairs of Studio D Artisans one of which I will wash every couple of weeks one I will leave like some Banditos prospect and see what happens..
