    In this video I perform the guitar parts to "My Curse" by the awesome band Killswitch Engage. This is a fan video, with due credit and appreciation for the creators of this music and is meant to serve as an educational video for the like-minded KsE fans.
    The lessons this week will be:
    1) Analyzing the Outro harmonies
    2) Building new chord voicings
    Full song tab can be found on: tinyurl.com/6q5...
    For song lyrics go to: tinyurl.com/8a4...
    Love music - play it!
    Gear I use for this:
    Guitar: Ibanez GAX70
    Picks: SIK PIK D35
    Strings: Ernie Ball RPS 11-48

    Everyone complaining about this not being a lesson on the song can just click on any of the dozens of other videos (including one by the band themselves!) if they really can't find tabs. This video (and your others like it) are awesome for really breaking down the relationships between notes in a simple riff pulled from the song, and I love the fact that you do it all in one take instead of editing out any mistakes in your lesson.
    It's been a couple years since you posted this (and all your other KsE vids), but I hope you do more videos like this one in the future.

      +David Baji Thanks David. Yes, the idea was not the learn the song itself. As you say - Adam and Joel of KsE already do a great instructional video on it. So, the idea was to learn from the song itself and look under the hood of composition, so hopefuly after digging deep into it one can write a song like that themselves. Thanks again for your support. - Boyan

    I see a lot of comments saying that they would rather just learn the song, but as you've stated in an earlier reply, there is a lot of ways to learn this song. I, for one, love what you are doing with this series and enjoy any help I can get with songwriting as a whole. Keep up the great work!

    THIS IS SO FUCKING AWESOME , BUT THEIR ONE THAT STAND OUT IS YOUR PLAYING ON A $99 GUITAR BECAUSE I HAVE THE SAME ONE , BUT I PUT SOME EVO PICK UP ON MINES, DONT KNOW IF YOU DID THE SAME BUT YOU MADE THAT GUITAR SOUND LIKE A $1000 GUITAR , EPIC JOB MAN

    • @boyanboguitar
      @boyanboguitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much. These are the stock Ibanez pickups. The guitar now has mid-level Dimarzios. It's amazing how a few magnets can improve the tone!

  • @Nurhaal
    @Nurhaal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I keep coming back to your vids of KSE stuff because of your tone. It's absolutely brutal.
    What was your gear setup back when did these KSE tutorials? They're heavy and phat as hell in the tone.

    • @boyanboguitar
      @boyanboguitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much. The tone was squeezed out of a POD processor, which was nothing special on its own. The trick was in following the same technique / pattern as producer / engineer Andy Sneap had done on the record. Two double-tracked guitars - not hard panned both left and right but in a spectrum. This is very good example of how it is the recording and production of track are the real mystery behind the guitar sound. No, it's not possible to get that tone from 1 guitar alone. The recording was a long processed, indeed.

    • @Nurhaal
      @Nurhaal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@boyanboguitar I've heard that advice before from people like Steven Wilson, Vai, and others.
      They say that it's the ONLY way. The small imperfections between the double layers tracks is what gives it some much depth. No chorus of synthetic method will replicate it.
      I'm not a very good guitar player but I love hunting for that perfect tone that fits my taste and you've got a sick tone in this track. I'm hoping to emulate it. Hunting for tone is why I've started building guitars recently, trying my hand at being a luthier.
      What distortion did you use?
      And since I'm not very well educated in the art of shred yet - what's a POD Processor?

    • @boyanboguitar
      @boyanboguitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Nurhaal Fantastic. I love the artists you mentioned and a fan and student of their music. You are on a good track with understanding the recording process. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, so individually those guitar tracks don't sound great - but together they become "massive."
      I didn't use any additional distortion. All the effects came from the POD PRO X (Line 6 company) processor. It has built-in amplifier digital emulators. I set it to the Mesa Boogie setting (close enough) - it is a very "dry" signal - no delays, reverbs or choruses (as you pointed out). I find it works well for the recording. These devices are great for playing with tone - like the Kemper, the Helix (Line 6) again, and many others.

    Thanks Li, you're very kind.
    I am sorry that the theory part does not thrill you, but I find it to be a very easy way of learning and transcribing music. I teach private lessons on skype as well, and I find that using cool music (like KsE) to teach some theory concepts works fine.
    (If you have a theory question - please message me!)
    I can't do the LL style teaching because I have to pay a licensing fee to teach people how to play that song - rather than extract some lessons from it! Bo

      Thank YOU very much!
      I used my PodXt for all these recording. This tone is a clean Jazz amp with a bit of chorus, tube echo delay, and a 35% spring reverb. I don't remember if I used the neck or bridge pickup. Try both! :)

    Hi L.C.,
    I use the same tone as with remainder of the song, with the addition of a little delay. It comes off nicely with palm muted parts! I have a Line 6 patch that I can send along if you use Line 6 gear.
    Cheers

  • @adtrfan2219
    @adtrfan2219 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Question! Can you please tell me how you play the lead to the chorus? The way I play it seems different from the song, and from your cover

    • @Boyanbo
      @Boyanbo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! You are referring to the motif in the Chorus, which is the same as in the Introduction, only played with distortion rather than with a clean tone... correct?
      Yes, I can clarify that. Please follow the link under the video to the tab. I use a slightly different fingering to play those parts, different to those that Adam D of KsE would use; the reasons there are purely physiological. Adam D. can pull off a wider finger stretch than I can, so I choose to play the motif closer together. Don't worry, it's still very much the exact notes. Cool?

      Yes, and quite a lot of people do just teach the song. I am more interested in teaching you how to write songs like this :) It is the "teaching one to fish" rather than "giving you a fish" situations. On the serious side, there is a great video of Adam and Joel teaching the tune for Guitar World. It would have been funny for me to say that I can do a better job of teaching it than the people who wrote it ;)
