My cousin and I shared a bottle of Lagavulin 16 at his wedding reception. One of his friends and I hung out and he asked me at one point if I smelled burning electronics. Looked around for a second and then I thought and offered my glass for him to smell. The look of disgust on his face made me so happy. Lol.
ha! love that story! first time i had a Lag16 my wife and son asked..from WAYYY across the room..."whats that smell!?!". i said "does it smell like a burning soccer field?" they said yes. i said "thats daddys drink..mmm mmm good".
When I first started on my Whisk(e)y journey about 2 years ago, I bought a Laphroig 10 and Redbreast 12 to venture out of bourbon in the fall of 2021. When I offered the glass over to non whiskey drinkers, and non-peated whiskey drinkers the visceral reaction was always very entertaining.
The hot sauce analogy is spot on. I find myself telling people something is not that hot, and then they freaking out. I've find out I'm not a good judge of heat levels for the normies.
(I'm an Ardbeg Fan) I bought a bottle of Hypernova when it first came out for $200+. I was sorely disappointed as it tasted REALLY young (Think, Wee Beastie with some extra smoke). It isn't bad, but then I realized I could have bought two bottles of Uigdail and had change left over. It isn't in the same league as Uigdail. I think I'm done with Ardbeg special releases.
I have acclimated to peat/smoke from Laphroaig 10, it smell pretty, floral with a nice little gentle sweetness on the taste. Ardbeg 10 is still a bit more burnt meat smoke but I am also getting used to it too :x
I was at a whiskey bar and my friend asked for a scotch cocktail recommendation (he likes bourbon). I told him that I enjoy a laphroaig old fashioned. He ordered one, took a sip and yelled, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!?! So, as a peat head, I relate to your explanation of having a normal person smell a Smokey scotch. 😂🤣
I saw this in my local liquor store for like $205.00, so sad that it's out of my price range and that I will probably never get to try it, but I'm curious to know how does this compare to the Uigeadail or corryvreckan and is it worth the price difference?
Maybe not imho... I've had all three and enjoy both Corryvreckan and Uigedail and find more in both of those. Like these guys I was underwhelmed by the smoky claims of Hypernova. EDIT: agree that water does bring the smoke forward more.
I have a friend that is definitely my smokey whisky barometer. When we're hanging out he can smell the smoke from across the room when I've got it in my glass.
That's weird. We brought in a couple of cases of Crown Royal salted caramel at our store before Christmas and we still can't sell the stuff, even with offering tasting samples in the store. To me it just tastes like chemicals. :D
I have a Lagavulin 16 and it is great. Had a ardberg 10 at a wedding and like you said it’s like licking the inside of a charcoal grill couldn’t finish it. And I’m sure this is way out for me. I enjoy less peated scotches but these over the top ones I’ll pass.
So your on the Yellow Brick Road? It's a commitment to join the dark side. Lag 16 was the GOAT. Ardbeg10 is the King of Islay. If you do well with these 2 you are well on your way down the dirty path.
Went back to look for myself, and any others that wanted to see that Tribe video. It was done on May 1, 2021. So sorta split the difference for Daniel and Rex's answers. I really need to pick up an Islay. It's been awhile. Maybe after Dry Week.
I had a sudden thought watching the comments portion of the show today. Are there any distilleries playing with things like single distilling, aging in a barrel, doing a second distilling and finishing in a different barrel? How would that impact the whiskey?
Daniel's comment about needing a non peaty whiskey person to tell if something has a lot of peat in it or not is accurate! The other night, I was out at an Irish pub with some friends, and they had a great whiskey selection, so I got a pour of Laphroaig Lore. I'm definitely desensitized to peat. I thought it was a normal level. My friend two seats down could smell the smoke.
"I feel like it was really recently..." The pandemic destroyed the concept of time. Six months ago, a year ago, five years ago, it's all the same thing. There's only "before now" and "after now."
Firestone Walker did a Scotch Parabola one year (2017 I believe) that had this intense smokey aroma and flavor (I loved it and wished they had continued making it). I recently found out why it was so intensely smokey; they aged it in Ardbeg barrels.
How long does it take for you to reset your palate? For me it’s at least a week or two . Especially with Islay. It’s almost frightening how quickly I acclimate to the peat
There was only the Committee Hypernova, no general release. Incidentally, PPM measurements are taken once the barley is malted and dried, before any of the rest of the whisky making process takes place.
Agreed that this doesn't live up to the smoke hype. I expected a smoke bomb, and octomore blows this out of the water. Or even Laphroaig 10 CS. Either way, and I'm even an Ardbeg fan boy, I am not impressed for $200.
The rose scent isn't quite what I was thinking, as that flower has a distinct smell. I would have said primrose or one of its lighter cousins. Otherwise, you'll make people cringe at the idea that it smells like your old great-grandmother's parfum.
Had a chance to grab this at my local but 200usd+ when the core range is really good and arguably about as good as most of their special releases, not to mention non-age statement? Yes I know most the core range is non-age statement but still. Pass.
7:30 my wife is that barometer. I will have something that is apparently lightly smokey, and all i'm tasting is the fruit & brine...then she smells it & has that "what is that" reaction & lets me know it's smokey
I use my wife as my control; The last Ardbeg I got, she tried to dump it out on me after smelling it 😮😂 Also, Devil's Cut is my go to if I want a bourbon and water 😁
Have production costs gotten so high that you can’t afford to insert the purple funk visual with the muted brrrh sound anymore? Maybe it’s time to pass a collection plate?

I suggested lagavulin 16 to a co worker that said he like smokey scotch
He threw up after he drank it
@@waddell7354either he was really drunk, or he doesn't like smoky scotch 😂
Hey I thought I was the only one who got the "burning plastic" note from Lagavulin 16. Burning electronics is pretty close for sure!
I came to this channel years ago for the whisky reviews. But I stay here for the serious attitude.

Happy Hypernova Day!!!
1:08 FYI Rex, "PPM" is "Pizzas Per Mile" not "Parts Per Million."
Cheers to Colin for the tour of Ardbeg such an amazing time!!!!

I like how Torabhaig lists ppm at malting and ppm at bottling.

Same, I wish I could go back and try them for the first time again, I miss that ashtray burnt leather note lol

GOOD MORNING YOU MB'S.... 🥃
Happy Memorial day to those in the USA... Remember those that made today possible.
Happy Monday :)
Even when you guys do Ardbeg you do a version that most of us can’t get our hands on! :D
They should put a GoPro on the rim of that bin or basket and aim it to Daniel. I'd really like to see those throws from the bins perspective 😂

Smoke on another level
Stay within your budget. Share a bottle with friends.
It's just whisky.
I prefer the Uigeadail and Corryvreckan to it personally. It's nice but $90 nice not $200 nice!
I have a friend that is definitely my smokey whisky barometer. When we're hanging out he can smell the smoke from across the room when I've got it in my glass.
The flavored whiskey video you're talking about was over on Tribe and it was May 1, 2021.
Guilty pleasure crown Black. Love the herbal content

I've had them all and SN2010 is the best release out of the Supernova/Hypernova collection by far for me.
Went back to look for myself, and any others that wanted to see that Tribe video. It was done on May 1, 2021. So sorta split the difference for Daniel and Rex's answers. I really need to pick up an Islay. It's been awhile. Maybe after Dry Week.
My wife does not share it or understand it, but she accepts my enjoyment of Laphroaig 10.
My wife once commented after I poured myself a glass of Laphroaig 10, “Is someone asphalting a road in here?” 😅
6:30 "Bloop me daddy." *Bloop*
Highlights video.
Finally some bottles I have a chance of finding lmao
Thanks for the video 🥃

Ardbeg is definitely a challenge even after having lagavulin 8 but I love it especially when pairing with smoked meat.
"I feel like it was really recently..." The pandemic destroyed the concept of time. Six months ago, a year ago, five years ago, it's all the same thing. There's only "before now" and "after now."
Figured it was as good a time as any to pop the cork on my bottle and taste alongside this review. Glad I did. This is delicious stuff.

Have a great Memorial Day you magnificent bastards

I'm going to crack my bottle when I get home from my hitch. Looking forward to it.
There was only the Committee Hypernova, no general release. Incidentally, PPM measurements are taken once the barley is malted and dried, before any of the rest of the whisky making process takes place.
salted caramel bourbon, kahlua and cream is soooo good...
Hypernova... that's a 2022 release, right? When did you reopen the bottle donations?
Hi, that was going to be my question. Bottled in May 2022.... the donations stopped way before then. Cheers.
Agreed that this doesn't live up to the smoke hype. I expected a smoke bomb, and octomore blows this out of the water. Or even Laphroaig 10 CS. Either way, and I'm even an Ardbeg fan boy, I am not impressed for $200.
Need to try this one.
I love Ardbeg, but never seen this one before
So with normal PeePeeEmmm being BS, is it possible to measure PPM at point of bottling?

That episode was 2 yrs ago FYI
The wonderful palate destroyer
White owl Canadian white whiskey review 🤔
Another great video 😁 I too have become too used to peated whisky, it just smells sweet and fruity now lol
What is the best Ardbeg for a beginner?
10 Year Old
7:30 my wife is that barometer. I will have something that is apparently lightly smokey, and all i'm tasting is the fruit & brine...then she smells it & has that "what is that" reaction & lets me know it's smokey
I sometimes wish I'd never tried Ardbeg Uigeadail. It has just ruined every other Scotch I've tried for me. I peaked far too early.
I go back and forth between Uigeadail and Corryvrecken. For me, they offer a nice contrast. 😊
If you want caramel, forget the flavored stuff, try Blade and Bow.
How many more years until we get the trash cam!!!
I love smoke, the smokier the better and this has the be smokiest tasting whisky ive ever had.
Where is Briana ?
Salted Carmel crown and coke is so damn sweet.
Mooch rating for this episode: 0.5
Tried to get an extra pour, but Daniel is getting immune to the mooch charm.
It's been awhile since I have watched one of your videos, but "Ardbeg". 👍👌🤘✌️😎
🎶 Bloop me, Daddy, eight to the bar …🎵
I use my wife as my control; The last Ardbeg I got, she tried to dump it out on me after smelling it 😮😂 Also, Devil's Cut is my go to if I want a bourbon and water 😁
10:35 lol
"Bloop me daddy"😂😂😂😂😂
Have production costs gotten so high that you can’t afford to insert the purple funk visual with the muted brrrh sound anymore? Maybe it’s time to pass a collection plate?
A wee rolly rolly, no swishy swishies! 😄
I used to be a snob like you, but then I took a JW Red Label OTR to the knee.
This release has been getting killed. Have seen many people swearing off Committee releases.
it´s like Iodine for Bros "Brodine"
Got to give it a “good J swirl”, via ADHD Matt!
My rule: Canadian whiskey always sucks. Something is wrong with the taste buds up there, Bud. 😂
So disappointed in Jim Beam. Watered down in Oz to 37%
Jim beam sucks. And not paying for ardbeg special release when you can get port Charlotte 10. And don't get me wrong I love me some ardbeg 10
Seems like this would've been a good one for the ice lord to add ice to the whiskey. Come on Rex :P
Crown Royal will always suck😂😂😂.
Crown Royal Vanilla and Coke beats JD!!!
Christopher Columbus 1st
Lost me at rose.
Ardbeg and Coke = Skokie coke
Smokey
Love the review for what would totally have been a RWF if it didn't have the name Ardbeg. 😂
