It reminds me of the rose window at the Washington National Cathedral! This is beautiful! My ice maker is broken or I would try this technique but I'm going to try something similar with wet dyes and tying the shirt the same way. I'm brand new to this craft so I'm gathering as much knowledge as I can before I start.
I gathered about 3 months worth of info before I started! Haha. I'm still a newbie but, I have definitely been studying fold and dye pattern combinations, lately. Trying to SOMEWHAT control the results. Happy dying, when you do decide to start! Tip: take your time in the folding/tying process, it yields much better results--this coming from someone who has NO patience!
Your lines are beautiful! I think I'm going to try this with a green in place of the red. I love the pattern it creates! Thank you for the explanation at the end of dye placement! :)
Your designs are very cool... They are well planned out, and the color choices work well together. I actually liked the white parts you think are unfinished. I want to try to do one with a guitar design. Any ideas on how to do that? Thank you for sharing!
Dude! Your like bliwing my mind! I wsh just looking for s fun desighn to pop my cherry and also get eid of some materials. But daaaaam. Im gonna have to go hit hobby lobby again. 😊❤. My husband is gonna get so mad. Lol. Oh well. Maybe ill make him one.. . Maybe. 😉
It depends on the the design and how it looks after the first cycle of ice melt. You can add a second round of ice to the first side, flip and dye the second side, place it in a container and do a muck dye, etc. Each option will result in a different final look.
Thank you very much! I just started and have a couple that are ok. Practice practice practice lol Love what you did here. You have some great designs! I have contacted Dharma about delivering to Canada. All the best!
Hello, well I just tried this and love what I got (thanks for the idea). I love yours better!!! I didn't get the definition in the start of the circle. I would love to send you a photo and maybe you could make a suggestion? Have a great day!
This shirt is gorgeous. Wondering if you could go back and put a little powder dye on those spots and fix the white area you weren't happy about. Or would it mess it up?
With a peacock design, think of how you'll have your arms most of the time. If they'll be down, I'd probably match the arm placement to "real life" to keep the pattern flowing.
I realize this is an older video and I did read through the comments but I did not see anything about whether you placed the shirt on the tray into a plastic bag while it was curing for 24 hours?
Beautiful results! I'm new to this craft you are the first person I've seen use powdered dye and ice cubes it seems to take longer but is there a benefit to this method over liquid dye? Thanks for the up! 🌈🤙
Oh, there are many, many of us that ice dye. There's also LWI (Low Water Immersion) and HWI (Hot Water Irrigation) with both liquid and ice dye methods. Check out my "Batch Time Test" video for the results of all of those methods: th-cam.com/video/sN0P3xOGvGo/w-d-xo.html And, to see the difference between ice dyeing and liquid dyeing the same pattern, check out: th-cam.com/video/HgEpV905lpA/w-d-xo.html If almost always prefer ice dyeing. It has less prep time and more color depth due to the dye splitting.
I notice you have color labels on top of your dyes. I have been trying to figure out how to do that. I use the Dharma dyes as well. How did you get the swatches for the lid on the dyes? You're work is beautiful.
I buy this each time I order new dye colors: www.dharmatrading.com/tools/fiber-reactive-poster.html Just cut out the swatches and use double-sided tape to attach them to the lids.
i've been watching this may time, I just have a question, what is your method in rinsing this one, is it just water or you used synthrapol?? Hope you notice this. Thank you in advance. Love your videos! Bless up!
My wash routine is: 1) Rinse-out in the sink until I'm sure the soda ash has been flushed along with any visible particulate dye. Typically a max of 2-4 minutes. I do not rinse until the water runs clear as I've seen no issues with contamination/bleeding in my shortened rinse process. 2) Wash in the washing machine with warm water and an extra rinse cycle using whatever detergent I have at the time. I haven't used synthrapol in about a decade and I haven't seen any issues arise by not using it. 3) I run the shirt(s) with a soft towel in the dryer. 4) After that, if it's a personal shirt, I toss it in with whatever else I'm washing on warm. In our house, we do not separate brights, colors, black, white, etc. *Everything* is washed together and I haven't seen any issues with color bleeding or excessive wear on the shirts.
Have you thought about using zip ties instead of rubberbands for folds like this one and can you put it in the freezer instead of using ice if using liquid dye instead of using solid dyes? I want to try this pattern fold from the bottom of the t-shirt. Can you use more than 3 colors? I want to make PRIDE shirts with that fold and I want to incorporate the different flag colors. That includes the rainbow.
This is probably the most basic question but is the shirt slightly wet? I am completely new to this so sorry if that should be obvious😅 I really love how that design looks, it is just absolutely stunning!
I don't know if I'm asking this correctly but how many bottles worth of dye does the ice dye technique use. I'm thinking it uses more powder , but have no clue really
The spoon I use in almost all of the videos is a baby food spoon that holds less than 1/4 teaspoon of dye - even when the dye is heaped on. I don't keep track of the volume of dye I use per shirt; but, from inventory control, I know I average about 50 cents worth of dye per large shirt.
@@CasualCollisions I'm familiar with both styles of dying in general, but I was wondering about this specific pattern. I could see a liquid dye version being amazing or just clunky, so I was just wondering.
@@dhbillings - Ah, okay. No, I haven't dyed this pattern with liquid dye. It's pretty rare for me to liquid dye something as I generally don't like the look of liquid dyes.
@@CasualCollisions no :( ... i put an equal amount of dyes and soda ash and put them at the same time. on my damp fabric. and does it matter if the fabric is 50% polyester?
@@ann2679 - Yes, that's the issue. Fiber reactive dyes only work with 100% natural fibers. From my experience, even an 85% cotton shirt will show substantial loss in saturation.
If you mean the stitches that actually sew the shirt together, it's because it was sewn with polyester thread instead of cotton. Procion dyes will not bond to polyester. Stitches on a shirt sewn with cotton thread will dye the same colors as the shirt. But cotton-sewn shirts harder to find and more expensive.
@@lucindawelenc2191 - I'm referring to the quality of the stitching, not the use of polyester thread. I routinely purchase the PFD version of the shirts that have cotton stitching for certain projects; but, the PFD versions have a very long torso compared to the standard G200 shirts so I don't use them for most projects. The polyester thread/undyed stitching is fine with me as I've found the polyester thread to be stronger than the cotton thread; but, the quality of the stitching since they changed to the silver tags is poor compared to the previous white tag versions of the shirts.
No. RIT dye is more like a stain while Procion fiber reactive dye bonds to the fabric fibers. The result is that shirts dyed with Procion dye stay vibrant for many, many dozens of washes. My sons have shirts that have been washed over 200 times and they still retain 70%+ of the original color saturation.

❄Cool❄The white splotches adds more character! Great job!
Just curious. Did you apply more ice after the camera was off ??? I just seem to always use A lot of ice
Looks great! Do you have to add dye to the second side when you ice dye? or does the dye melt through completely.

Can I ask you something? Did you put the paints together, mixed up? Because in the video you show that you are just putting a 'powder' on your shirt.

How come you didn’t put dye the other side? Would it have changed it much?

Looks like you rinsed with cold water, did you do anything special after the first rinse, like a textile detergent or retayne?
I wash with detergent and Dawn during the final wash cycles.
Did you go back and do the other side?
