I was outside watering plants with my beardie, when some lady walks up and says, “Is that an iguana?”
I feel ya. I had people calling my bearded dragons iguanas, frogs, salamanders and tortoises. I was like "B*tch is u blind?" 😂
This lady thought my beardies were geckos...
Big Banana I can get iguana or salamander, but frog?! Tortoise?!
Them: "Arent them the things that run around all over the place in mexico?"
Me: "Do you mean Australia?"
I've had 2 people think my bearded dragon was a horny toad

I think that does answer the question as to why they're such a popular basic breed, even if they're not the easiest
People want a big cool looking lizard that's chill, and that you can just hang out with
You can do that with other species, it just seems the size and nonchalant nature of tame dragons is really appealing
i will never own a beardie because i didn't know they could stand up with their bellies off the ground and the first day I met my girlfriends dragon it stood up, charged at me, bobbed for a while before shitting and losing interest. Scary bois

what i find insane is that they all have personalities. my friends beardie just chills out and stares, but my boy flies around. he got hops. he’ll jump half way across his tank to his basking spot and he loves to explore. once he’s been out for a bit he spreads his legs out and flattens himself and lays his head down and takes a fat nap. i love him sm
edit: when i bought him at the pet store (DONT ATTACK ME THERE ARENT ANY BREEDERS NEAR AND I SPOIL HIM) we walked up to the tank, which was pretty well taken care of, and i looked at the 5 youngsters in the tank. four were just chilling and one on the branch just FLINGS himself into the water bowl and i KNEW he was the one
simon It's kind of insane to think people would be mad that you would buy a pet from a pet store. Yes they sometimes don't take the best care of their pets, but isn't that even more reason to get them AWAY from that situation? Yes you support that business, but is their "morality" on the issue based solely on profit of a company who exists and is making profit regardless (considering they sell all kinds of animals and food, toys, etc) of this one, individual who someone may be able to get away from that situation.
I'm glad that you got your noodle out of a bad place regardless of who profitted off of it.
PsionicMonk I think certain people think that it’s bad to support the stores, but it goes both ways as your saving them from living a neglectful life.

True. They seem different to most pettubers though, being more focused on snake conservation and education, and nost non-snake animal they keep are rescues that require a lot more experience and resources than beardies.
They don't, they don't have a lot of "mainstream" reptiles.
My beardie is like a dog to my family. His favorite place is on the back of my chair while I do homework. He loves strawberries more than anything else and I've taken him in a dog kennel when we had to leave for a hurricane and he really just wanted to sit on my lap the whole ride

Whenever I take my dragons out with me, I always get people thinking it's fake, a broach, part of my shirt, or an iguana! lol Though once they realize it's real, they almost always get fascinated and ask questions or want to take a picture of them~

Idk why they're known as "easy beginner" pets they need special lighting, a large enclosure, mixed diet.
Blade Vizor yeah, if they weren’t so popular they would be intermediate. Their popularity actually makes them easier because so many people make care guides.
My point was other animals that aren't really labled as begginer reptiles are comparable to bearded dragons.
I’d say it’s primarily because they’re very easy to breed and so the trade is full of them, an ‘easy beginner’ reputation definitely suits people who have a lot of them to sell.
Here in Australia keeping reptiles is very different to in the USA and Europe, we can only legally keep native, captive bred specimens. So they are a very popular reptile here too, but you do do need a wildlife license for one, where you don’t with a blue tongue, shingleback or an eastern long neck turtle.
It’s a shame you guys can’t access many other Australian dragons, we’ve got many really cool ones.
Theyre more of a rewarding beginner rather than an easy one. Although they arent hard to keep at all tbh
Probably because they are so easy to handle and tame. The supplies to provide the right care are also easily purchased.
They arent terribly difficult if you do the research.
1:53 I love how you put him in a blanket even though he is cold blooded.
Hazel Levesque they still need heat and always have to be hot. If he didn’t use that blanket that beared could of died or gotten really sick
Shaggy Shawn cold blooded animals can’t make their own heat so a blanket wouldn’t help them as they have no body heat to warm up the blanket in the first place. (You know when you get in bed at night and at first it’s cold but then your body heat makes it warm) That being said I’m guessing he used a heated blanket

my bearded dragon is my best friend! he’s my ESA and i take him wherever I can with me! i had 2 before him because I bought them through petsmart then petco and was very uneducated and they didn’t live very long... but then I got one from the local pet store and learned a lot and my current bearded dragon is a healthy fat boy. don’t know what i’d do without -them- him* :D

I’d love to see a bearded dragon tank set up and husbandry, I know there are so many out there but I feel like (because they are so commonly kept as pets) it is fairly controversial and differs quite a lot from owner to owner but since it’s obvious that you are very knowledgeable and have the experience, I feel like I and probably many others would trust your care guide more so than any other! I’ve been tossing up getting one for a few years now and always find my way back to the ultimate questions of what’s the ideal substrate and what’s the optimum lighting/heating fixtures etc. so I would absolutely love to see a care video from you :)

I wild caught my beardie as a kid (we’d let them go) but he was covered in so many mites/tics that we took him home and cleaned him up, gave him a good diet for a couple weeks and just ended up keeping him, that was 12 years ago and he’s still going strong, he might’ve been 1 or 2 when I found him so he could be around 14-15 years old now, absolute champion.

I don't have a bearded dragon. But I do have 4 leopard gecko's, a corn snake, a Kenyan sand boa and we'll probably picking up a king snake next month at the Expo.
As a kid I always like snakes over lizards.
When I was twelve I got a dragon but I didn’t know what to feed him so my dad took me to petsmart to ask and a staff member said meal worms little did I know that was only supposed to be a treat and slowly my beloved pet died and I don’t think I will ever forgive that woman for not just saying “ I don’t know go ask one of the other staff members”☹️
Petsmart employees are not always reliable, I did research before getting my sister a hamster, and there were sisters in a tank and the woman was like “oh yeah they’re related they can live together forever” even though I told her that they aren’t supposed to🤷🏻♀️
My mom believed her over me and it didn’t end up well

Honestly, sounds to me like they DID do their research BY consulting the pet store; it was just unfortunate circumstance that the source they thought they could trust (the pet store) was not so dependable after all. My adult self knows better, but I'm pretty sure my childhood self would have assumed I could trust "the people at the pet store."
Many of us may well understand that large chain pet stores are not reliable source of information, and WE may realize that it's necessary to consult more specialized sources of information. However, as much as we might wish otherwise, that reality is not necessarily common knowledge.

My leopard gecko loved to watch the lights and road when we go on trips (I’m in college so we travel from the dorms sometimes)
I got my first Beardie while managing a pet store and we had new babies come in and went on vacation. When I got back there was one little one in the sick room missing one digit and half of his tail. While cleaning out his tank I put him on my shoulder and then got called up front and forgot he was on my shoulder until a lady said my “brooch” moved! He just chilled on me and since I was in charge of his care he just became so endearing to me, and we couldn’t sell him so I decided to take him home. That was 8 years ago and many other pets and reptiles later and he is still my fav.

beardys, from what i seen from other YTers who have 1, tend to always have the best personalities out of all lizards. i prefer chamelons cuz they just crack me up but even they seem to be so shy, beardys not so much. a lizard you can really chill with.
Plus chameleons are so delicate; beardies can kick it hard with you
I think bearded dragons are very charming and cute, and I love to watch videos of and/or about them. I’m just... not interested in having one of my own. The pressure to have one as a reptile keeper is stupid. But I’m glad you meshed with this little guy well, despite your previous opinion.
If you ever get *stuck in the cold with a pet* you can *PLACE THEM UNDER YOUR CLOTHES, ON YOUR CHEST, SKIN TO SKIN, TO HEAT THEM!* your body heat will heat them up. It'll help them survive. It's a technique I have used.

This is the second video of yours that has popped up in my suggestions, and of course I watched, since it's a dragon. I really like your videos, and you got a new subscriber :) I got my dragon after meeting one, and it helped me get over wanting a monkey. A dragon is a much better pet than a monkey, not sure what I was even thinking there, but dragons have hands, just like monkeys, lol. I think that's what sold me. I chose the baby dragon that was just calmly watching me from the little tank in the pet store, I figured that was the sign.... which one was super calm and content. He still is, my awesome Murray. Thank you for doing videos! I look forward to what shows up in my subscriptions in the future, even if it isn't about a dragon. :)

I personally love staying at that “simple stage” in animal keeping. I’ve tried to take care of many more and it was becoming unmanageable and not as fun. I have two snakes and while I can appreciate the expanse of reptiles out there I certainly don’t have any desire to expand my ‘collection’, although tokay geckos are amazing. Amirite

Your beardie is so chill. I can hold mine for about 2 minutes and then she gets bored and runs off. She really likes to climb things and jump off of things. And then find a random place in our house to turn into a sleepy pancake. She is only about 1.5 years old though, so maybe she just hasn't mellowed out yet.
