    How about a video on if an enclosure can be too big for a given reptile? Specifically I plan on making a custom large enclosure for a bci when it is still young, and I’m unsure if the big space when it’s still small could stress it out.

    I know this might be boring for most of your users, but would you ever consider doing a settup 101, for folks who are brand new? Like, I don't fully know what heat tape is, or pannels, and how specifically it would be used. I can infer from names, but I'd love to learn about heating a tank, but the "for dummies" version. I watch these videos and they're so helpful but also I feel like such a moron and so overwhelmed. A breakdown would be so helpful

    I would love to see a video on having different species pets. (I saw that cute dog at the end. I'm assuming it's yours.) By that I mean having say a dog and a reptile. I just recently got into snakes and would love to have one in the future but I love my fur babies and would be a bit worried about having fur babies and scale babies in the same house. (Snakes can escape; sneaky, owner error, etc. or a dog could jar the cage or something.)

    • @j.kaimori3848
      @j.kaimori3848 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on the type of dog and snake there's some options, arboreal snake and small dog - put the snake up on a chair or frame and shoo the dog, ground snakes could go on the table and this may be safe with any dog under supervision, else, if in doubt put the dog in another room while the snake it out. As for the cage, you could mark around it (buckets or rope) to prevent the dog running into it when you first get it. If you have a small non-venomous snake and an overly curious dog you could let the snake bite the dog to put some respect into the dog, results may vary. I think I'd do seperate rooms to start with since all of these require knowing your snake and new reptile owners typically don't have much experience with that. I also think if you fed the snake out of cage then the cage won't smell very interesting to the dog.
      I have some experience with snakes but not lots, this is mostly based on my knowledge of basic snake keeping and dogs.

    • @bluestarlight2237

      @@j.kaimori3848 Results may vary.
      Yes, depending on the dog (or snake) they may not get the message... I have had some dogs that are just dense and others that are just like "eh, whatever." So yes, very true. 😄
      That made my day. So thank you for the chuckle and the good advice. 😎

      @bluestarlight2237 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@j.kaimori3848 Unfortunately no. I still live at home with my parents. (I help take care of my Grandmother.) So between space and family members not liking reptiles, it will be a while until I can get a snake. At least until I can get my own place. I just really enjoyed your response and having had multiple dogs; can comment on some dogs intelligence, or lack there of... (It's ok we love them anyway.😉) So I completely believe that the let them figure out it isn't worth it on thier own technique would work.

    • @j.kaimori3848
      @j.kaimori3848 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bluestarlight2237 yeah, if you get a small non-venomous snake then the concern should be for the snake's safety first. I wish you the best if you do get one. In the case of these pets the danger is far more size related than species related between them. All the best for you and your family.

    @serpentgamer9964 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, I've got a question. Is undertank heat good or bad? I know for some species overtank heat is better but I've recently been hearing that under undertank heating like heat mats/pads and heat tape is bad and that they over heat or dont provide ambient heat or they're not effective. I wanna know if anyone here knows if it's true and very recent info that just came out or is it something that a Facebook group came up with and now suddenly everyone has to switch to overtank heat like CHE and basking bulbs because they said so. I just wanna know if this is true or false.

      @@margaretturtle5827 I know it depends on the species. Like bearded dragons its obviously better to have overtank heat. But what about ball pythons? I just recently got people over on reptile amino saying undertank heat is bad for them and I need to switch to overtank heat immediately. I've always got the impression that undertank heat for ball pythons is ok. Or is it not ok and I'm just a bit of a dumb dumb for thinking it was ok.

    • @Michelle_Mayo
      @Michelle_Mayo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@serpentgamer9964 they have found that under-tank heating can cause burns because they aren't very reliable and snakes can't sense heat as well on their underside. The recommendation is to use a thermostat if you do use one, and only if absolutely necessary. We live in a drafty apartment in Maine so an under-tank heat mat helps to keep everything warm enough for our bp during the winter. Our girl does not burrow under the hide where her heat mat is placed so we don't have to worry about burns.
      We also have a CHE and will be adding uvb soon. Overhead heating/uvb is much, much better, and closer to nature too :)

    Juuuust to throw this out there... biodegradable is not the same as compostable. A lot of “biodegradable” products aren’t actually eco-friendly, because they deposit microplastics into the environment under the guise of being compostable. Mercury vapour bulbs are awful, get yourself a solarmeter and read the uvb. The levels will be all over the place. Stick to the t5 or t8 tubes much more reliable and safe.

    Recently finished building my first Kages enclosure, and I gotta say one obvious benefit I've seen already is that it's a lot easier to maintain higher temperatures over a larger portion of the enclosure than it is with glass enclosures. I'm hoping this will help end the hunger strike my plains hognose has been on.

      It depends on your stores tbh. Really look at the overall health of their animals, and how clean their cages are specifically. Sometimes it's just not possible to get animals from a reputable breeder, but we're lucky to have very good pet stores where we live.

    Top 5 things you shouldn’t spend your money on:
    1. Heat rocks
    2. Calcium sand (most reptiles will die if they have sand in their enclosure and calcium sand is even worse)
    3. Reptile carpet (depends on the reptile and it’s super rare but could rip it’s claw out)
    4. Candles
    5. Spiders, ticks, centipedes, millipedes, scorpions, and fireflies. Don’t know why someone would fead them these but some people probably do

    Mercury Vapor Bulbs have been shown to produce wildly dangerous levels of UVB from time to time. Dr. Frances Baines recorded her findings of the largest three manufacturers of MVBs and I there were multiple recordings of over 10.0. Definitely requires a solarmeter 6.2 if you plan on using an MVB. These bulbs are wildly inconsistent, especially the off-brand chinese manufactured ones

    Ok, so, when you say pvc, do you consider the long term effects on the animals? Are there different types of pvc? Like do we have to worry about the effects of plastics on animals, or are they just cool? I am constantly worried about the effects synthetic environments have on my animals. Like the tubing in my fishtail for instance, or my snakes plastic bowls. I'm sure someone is studying it.
    Please don't think I'm insane, I just wonder if you breed animals that live in these environments will their offspring come out with more defects than ones not?
    I often wonder if convince trumps health in these cases, because they look and act fine, but what are the effects we aren't seeing?
    Oh god, I'm not trying to write a novel, but I hope someone can honestly help me in the right direction.
    Thanks for the video. Very informative.
