It's hard to resist "Free" and its cousin "Cheap". ... When I was eleven or twelve my aunt's neighbor got rid of a push mower because it stopped working and she gave it to me. I took it apart, cleaned it up, replaced the bad spark plug, and got it started! I did quickly remove the self-driving gear as I could walk faster than the drive turned. That mower mowed regularly for thirty years at three different houses, lost track of it after the last house was sold, maybe a nephew has it.
I would check for a bent crankshaft on that push mower if it has a tight spot in it. We had a cub cadet similar to that years ago and the hydro quit. Took it apart to fix it and found it to be super cheaply made. Had a 17 horse Kohler on it and a 5 horse would have been too much torque for it. The part that held the differential gears was just stamped sheet metal. Fixed it and didn’t last a year and the holes for the bearings for the planetary gears were all worn out again. Had less than 250 hours on it.
That belt is really easy to change. Take the deck off and get an approved hydraulic lift (tractor with loader). Stand the lawn mower on end to change the belt. It's fast and easy! If I can do it you can. I think my son has a video @workingwithAdam.
Good video Ross. After hearing the tractor running all the rest is a piece of cake. As far as the little one, a little carb cleaning and maybe a plug, you should have two good mowers. Not to bad for the price you paid. Thanks for sharing.
The Toro most likely needs carburetor cleaning. I still prefer the older Toro mowers, like the one my Grandpa bought for me to mow his lawn in 1986. It is still a great running machine after all these years.
Great find, I found a couple free mowers just like you did I cleaned the carburetors put new gas in them. I used both for about 10 years before they fell apart.
That rider looks to have a Kohler command engine that is better than the courage and should last a long time. The deck looks to be in good shape also most parts will interchange with your zero turn cub 50 inch deck the shell should be identical. Maybe some different mounting parts.
If you should intend to keep the cub to use, make sure to deactivate the reverse safety button. I was used to using an old john deere 110 and had to borrow a cub just like that one to get through until I could get a new drive belt. Long story short every time you back up while cutting you have to press and hold that stupid yellow button.
The toro has a battery on the deck under the black cover . There is no charging system , you plug the mower in to charge the battery for the electric starter . The handle moves because of the personal pace system. The more you push the handle forward the faster it will go. Expensive mower when new .
MTD made tractor. Parts have been the same for years and are usually easily available from places like Mower Doc out of Indy where I have used them many times and the parts usually arrive not long after getting off the keyboard. Plus their prices are fair. The spindles for the deck are so cheap that when we bought them we usually bought 6 at a time as just like you we have many metal surprises around my art supplies piles (normally called junk piles). Chain that sucker to your loader, pick it up and you will find the hardest thing about putting a new hydrostat belt on will be pulling the idler springs back. Wish I had beat you to it. BTW, steel wheels? One day my wife and I made a little 200-mile afternoon ride on our Goldwing motorcycle (We were 6 years younger and it was not a Harley that we had to fix every hundred miles or stop and polish every 50 miles) over toward your area, actually across IN on Rt, 50 to Cincinnati, OH. On the way there we saw an Amish woman mowing grass with a Scag Tiger on steel wheels. As one guy I told him about his comment was "If she was nursing, the kid would be drinking milkshake." It had to be a rough-riding machine.
Push mower probably dirty carb, old Tecumseh, not hard to fix. Rider looks in good shape too. Fix em both, sell the push along if you don’t need, or pass to someone in need of one.
Ross, you're just to so different that I can't stop listening to get you! As you know I'm a Cockshutt guy and I sent you a letter spilling the beans about COCKSHUTT and White and Oliver. Maybe someday you can expand on Agco tractors? Are they good or not? Do you think there is any qualities from the previous tractors? And where did that come from? Let us know and then we will all have a very good day! Skip, Western PA
I’ll have to maybe talk about them at some point. The larger AGCO tractors still used a White designed rear end, but a lot of the smaller ones are totally different animals. Thanks Skip!
And also I found out that the 500 series of Cockshutt's their rear ends are still being used in popular pulling tractor events, maybe the people at White and Agro are still using Cockshutt technology?@@rosstheoliverman
Aha...a 50 % success rate on starting freebies. You must be living right Ross!!! At least you won't have much invested in the cadet, even just as a back-up machine.
What's the "thin on videos"? One thing I've seen channels do to boost views from content is take a longer video and snip out their shorts to post, with links to the longer video (some seem to miss that part of the project). TH-cam+Google were pushing shorts faster than long-form videos, trying to compete with tiktok/etc. Not sure if that is still the case or not but snipping videos to pull shorts out can give you daily upload activity.
i had one of those cub cade lt1050s with the kohler courage or couger i cant rember the name they called it but the acr let lose and it was a "BLEEP" to get started
@@rosstheolivermanbtw they have a finicky key switch for the deck saftey i always left it on "saftey mode" so i didt have to deal with the deck switching off

Nothing better than something free you can flip and make a few bucks.
Exactly! Free 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Fresh barley pop! That’s funny dude! I enjoy your humor Ross!
Thanks 🤣
Get them all fixed up and running good Ross you never know who might need one of them 👍🏻
Thanks!
Ike the way you talk like I was there with beer in hand!
🤣🤣🤣
Price was definitely right. I have a Cub Cadet riding mower that looks a lot like that.
Thanks Charlie!
Hope get them going with go
I hope so too!
Check the flywheel key it could be out of time. On the self propelled mower.
I’ll dig deeper one day when it’s warmer. Thanks!!!

Yeah, they use a supercheap transmission made all of aluminum. Not much you can do about it except replace it when it starts getting wore out.
Did you say FREE. Awesome Saturday morning video for this old goat 😊
Yes! The magic word that is the key to my heart 🤣🤣🤣

I liked it
Thanks!
Nice video Ross. I’m also fond of free.
Thanks Larry!
drop the deck lift it with bucket tractor to change the drive make it a whole easier
That’s the way I usually do it on the zero turn so I’ll probably do that on here too
Good video Ross. After hearing the tractor running all the rest is a piece of cake. As far as the little one, a little carb cleaning and maybe a plug, you should have two good mowers. Not to bad for the price you paid. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Keith!
Rider has a bad neutral switch . Push mower check the carb and yes it is self propelled .
Thanks David!

Yeah, I don’t have much patience for push mowers 🤣, but I will mess with this on a little more at some point
Great find, I found a couple free mowers just like you did I cleaned the carburetors put new gas in them. I used both for about 10 years before they fell apart.
Sometimes people give up very easily, and the free stuff isn’t necessarily junk
Thanks for making me chuckle . 👍
🤣 thanks Mark!
by some slim chance I liked it !!
🤣🤣🤣
Treasure everywhere!
Absolutely!!

I’m hoping I either get some good use out of it, or somebody else needs it more than I do and makes an offer I can’t refuse 🤣
Well it ran,so that's a big thing
The first hurdle 🤣
You're not dumb at all ! Good find I think the self propelled will be worth a little more time
I’ll mess with it again on a warmer day sometime. Thanks!

Yeah, I worked at the Farm store when they sold those new and that is a super annoying feature
Free is great Ross
Thanks Stephen!
Good luck with the scrub cadet
Thanks 🤣

Even if it don't mow again free running motor can't go wrong
Agree!!
Change that "orange-can-of-death" on the side of the motor with a Wix or Napa filter and that Cub Cadet will probably be nice.
Push mower probably dirty carb, old Tecumseh, not hard to fix. Rider looks in good shape too. Fix em both, sell the push along if you don’t need, or pass to someone in need of one.
I will mess with them again at some point I’m sure and I’ll have more videos on them. Thanks Ron!
Check tension pulley for drive unit , maybe no good it will Shreds belts bubba .
Yeah, I will check that out whenever I get the new belt.

Little work get it cutting and mower just needs tlc
Thanks Alex!
👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
That tractor probably has a low oil shutoff that will keep it from starting.
That’s possible

🤣 Thanks Don!
Did you have the key turned on? On the Toro.
Yeah, I checked that it has nothing to do with ignition. It only has a cranking position and then springs back the other way.

Absolutely 🤣
I hate those big NASCAR style gas can spouts! The small ones are much, much better! Surprised you didn't give the push mower a shot of nose candy.
I thought of that, but I wasn’t gonna run and go get a can of it. We’ll mess with it again on a warmer day.
I know needs gas. You said. You don't like the cold. What state do you. Live in. I. Live. In. Delaware 😮
