Everyone is familiar with transformer toys, and Tim has quite a few in his collection. Most people will have seen the toys that switch between being a vehicle and then an animal - maybe a dog.
However Tim has many other examples, including the egg that morphs into a praying mantis, the little truck that becomes a helicopter, and an intriguing china object that morphs between looking like a rabbit and a duck - all you have to do is change it's orientation.

When I was four our five, my Mom decided to have her annual garage sale and sell off all the toys and clothes and such she decided I no longer had interest in. I LOVED the simple and instant transformation of the little blue, white and orange car that opened up into something else. But she had decided that it needed to go and I didn't want to put up a fight. I've spend forty years wondering what that stupid toy was... and now I know that it's a Tomy Fold-a-copter. I will be eternally grateful to you, sir.

agh that is so frustrating. i have plushies and toys that i felt so attached to that later got taken and sold. i just try to take solace in the fact that maybe another kid enjoyed them.
Isnt the point of teaching kids to give (or put it in garage sell) their toys is so they can be grateful for what they have and dont get attached to things that they actually dont need/use? Taking things that actually matter to the kids would probably rise a resistance and most likely no lessons learned :v

I have Masterpiece editions of Soundwave, Powerglide, Swindle and The Aerialbots, and they are complicated as hell to transform.

I had exactly this praying mantis as a kid. I loved it. And a brown beetle 🪲 from the same series. The mantis was quite complicated to get it back into the egg

In elementary school all my friends had transformers but I had the parents who gave their kid An Illustrated History of WW2 book for Christmas. So now that I'm a damaged adult I have to go to Toys R' Us and pretend to be buying gifts for nephews and nieces but the transformers are really just for me lol

2:00 It's a "Rock Lord" called Tombstome, one of the bad guys.
The Rock Lords, stone-like beings, were created for the "GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords" movie, as a counter to the machine based GoBots.
Rock Lords, were humanoids that had to evolve a transforming rock-like beings to survive the changing planet. Gobots had to do the same.
Both had organic brains that were natutaly connected to their robotic or rock based bodies.

In an episode of the animated series, it was shown the GoBots have an organic brain. No other organs were mentioned.
Battle of the Rock Lords explained both species, if you will, had to through those evolutionary processes in dealing with the changes both planets went through.
The Lore of the GoBots did say something like that they were biological life forms that had to have their bodies replaced due to conditions caused by war, much like the Fallout games.

5:14 I saw that at an Osco Drug around 1981-2 (age 5-6). I brought it into the area where they had about 4-5 arcade consoles to show my brother, and he screamed that I was shoplifting because I took it beyond the registers.

@Thomas Hutchins Especially Voyager Bayverse Prime (50+ transformation steps), 3rd-Party PeruKill (Lockdown), Toyworld AOE Optimus Prime, Toyworld Decepticon Triple-Changer Shatter, and many of the MP figures. Would probably need an ambulance on standby, LOL!
The transforming rock monster is called "Tombstone", and he was part of a series of transforming rock monsters from the 80's called the "Rock Lords" which was an odd spin off of the Go Bots franchise (and was also one of my favorite toys as a child). He's supposed to be quartz, though he doesn't much look like quartz, and much like the Go Bots you're correct in assuming that he was originally from Japan. The entire series (Go Bots/Rock Lords) was bought in bulk from Japan, and then re-branded and re-marketed in the states and Europe after the success of Transformers.
Character Bio from the back of the box: "Tombstone lives to fight. This evil warrior cares about only one thing: destroying good rocks! The last thing Tombstone wants to hear about is peace. A good battle will make his day as he rushes heedlessly at the enemy swinging The Reaper wildly and laughing at his foes as they retreat from the twirling scythe."

Yes. That was how I learned. Same with Bionicles, I never read the instructions and just figured out where the parts went by looking at the image on the box. I only got the original Rock Toa wrong due to what was a complicated kicking mechanism to my 6 yr old brain.
