The out of order one is a gag on vibrating beds in Hotel rooms, you used to be able to put a coin in next to the bed and the bed would shake. The joke is you put the money in and it didn't do anything so it's like you are stealing money.

A lot of people now do this as a fun project to get started or to practice with electronics so it's cool to see where it came from and it has a nice legacy. I also had a Chinese version of the coin box but it was a cardboard looking box with a cat inside that uses it's paw to drag the coin in. Again, nice seeing the origin of these things.
Back in the seventys, we went from brisbane to perth, We got to an stop and on the platform was an steam engine in an glass case. Put an penney in the coin slot and the weels go around and the pistons move back and forth, and steam came out of the funnle. We ran out of pennys i threw an tantram i was upset.
