Mr. Pete, please understand that many of us will never have a chance to see the inner workings of your toys. For us who stood amazed watch craftsmen turn blocks of metal into useful iteams and wounded how they do that, seeing you take apart a machine and explain how they work is a true treat. Please continue at your own pace being mindful of your health and safety. Thank you!

Sir, following both the CLAUSING Milling and K & T Milling Machines being restored. Sir, what a delight to watch it come back to life of perfection. So thankful for the awesome video to watch, but it is the pains you take in making it back to life. There work you do is certainly is the Love for Machines involving such an amount of labour for the Job. Sir, your pain is our delight. Wish I could have assisted you. Your level of detail works fine for me. So many little things to demonstrate - these parts are heavier than people think and surfaces more sensitive to damage than is usual around the house. What to hammer on and what not to hammer on. Very interesting.

Brings back memories of serving my apprenticeship at Avon Machine and Tool in the late 1960's. Every year production was shut down and all machines were taken apart, cleaned and scraped. Getting caught blowing off the machine with air meant termination.

Great video Mr. Pete. I have a Clausing 8520vertical milling macine which appears to share the table/saddle/knee with your machine. I took off the saddle to install a DRO and I recall it being a fussy job but well worth the time to get 40 years of chips and dried oil out of there. It's been a while, but I think I recall there being a pair of bearings at each end of the lead screw. Worth checking your parts diagram before you order them and reassemble everything.

    • @mrpete222

Mr. Pete for as long as we can remember, you have always talked about the evil air gun as you share taking the Clausing table end off to discover well more chips that did not just grow there on their own. Our thoughts, just strip the whole machine and rebuild her, we love watching total rebuilds, but we are not the ones doing the work here, you thankfully are and you share you work/videos well.

Most folks don't have an idea about all the extra work it takes to keep tools working, and I'm sure that you've many hours and days under your hat keeping the equipment going for the students.

    Pete,
That overhead arm brace is really useful at times, but as where to mount it, you must mount it down below the saddle on the knee itself. I think you were headed in the right direction at first but then seemed to think that the table side T slot was the place to mount it. Somebody put the table lock in the wrong place which would interfere with the brace when mounted on the knee. It looks to me like the far left gib bolt should be for the table lock. Moving the table lock to the left gib bolt position should fix the problem with mounting the brace to the knee. Of course, mounting it to the table would not permit any table movement in X or Y. But even when mounted correctly to the knee, still there is no vertical Z movement permitted unless you loosen the slide bolt at the top first. Hope this helps.
    Ray

Nice job so far Mr Pete. I’m just about done doing a partial rebuild of my Millrite vertical mill. The power down feed system was shot. I had to replace all the bearings and fix the bearing fits on one of the shafts. I also removed the table, saddle, and knee. Once I started taking things apart, I just didn’t know when to stop. Unless you see it for yourself, it’s hard to imagine all the places those chips can end up!

I have one question for you, the star wrench needed to un lock the two over arms is what size the manual speaks of a soc. set screw wrench, but the picture in the operating manual looks like a standard allen wrench, also in your video I see a allen wrench in the top of your machine. Thanks for all the great videos keep up the good work. Phil. o

Very interesting series. I have just been looking at what lathes.co.uk has to say about the machine - small point but that yoke evidently fixes to the two holes either side of the saddle side feed - I'm sure you would have remembered that or worked it out when actually trying to fit it. Quality machine, evidently. I don't mind the detail - think of it this way, if listening to you for 30 minutes was a burden, we probably wouldn't bother with 15 minutes either.

Starrett is great stuff. The 50225 square head from Zoro Tools is $75.00. Your friend made out well. Check out Purple Power for cleaning machinery. It is available from Walmart, Napa, Advance Auto Parts, etc. If you leave it on a painted surface, it will attack it. If used to clean and rinse right away, no problem. I used it to clean up an aluminum cylinder head on which I did a valve job. Alkaline based so if you get it on your skin, it feels like it will never wash off, slippery. It is NOT removing skin as some believe. Thanks for another informative video.

Ain't nothing wrong with a good machine clean up, it's often overdue and well deserved on these old lumps.

I take the gibs out when removing tables so all that "Hanging Pressure" when the table is at the end, does not happen. I do set up a support table or hoist to prevent hang as much as possible. I think you will need to remove the spindle in order to take knee off. Great time to install a one shot oiler now! I got a small vertical apart right now that has oilers like yours has, and I am going to install one shot. I have another mill with 40 taper, and on the end of tools, just like your 30 tooling, they have that extension. My mill is specified as 40 quick change, and I wonder if you have 30 quick change. I have only recently done a tiny amount of research into the various 40 tapers, and it does appear that some are not interchangeable. Advise you to investigate same for 30 taper, you do not want to damage socket with a 30 that seems to fit well, but is not exact same. I have just got access to my 40 taper mill, been behind a bunch or real heavy machines, some near 10,000 lbs, but just got rid of them all. They automatic forging presses, not what I need or want nowdays. Anxious to mess with the big mill again.

I'm not sure about quickchange tooling for a number 30. I need compact tooling that does not steal the space on me

I think the nt and iso tapers are exactly same, and for bt you need a longer drawbar. But if the spindle is bt, you can't probably fit the iso and nt there

That support bolts to the knee not the table. The holes to either side of the dial I believe. You could always scrape in that gib. :-) You tube channel Unknown Apprentice has a whole series on doing a Bridgeport and its the same in theory.

HINT: To increase dial readability for tired old eyes, I blacken the dials (gun bluing solution) and then fill the engraving with “white paint”. For the “paint” clear epoxy glue filled with titanium dioxide powder ($4-$5 Ebay) to make a thick paste works really well - and is so much easier to see. You just smear the paste on and wipe it off!

As an EE I strongly adivce the use of a VFD instead of the rotary convertor .
You'll get somuch more out of your machine .
Far better torque , soft start , braking , less conversion losses , motor can be reversed for tapping at the press of a button , and within acceptable limits you 'll be ablee to have speed control .

That's a beautiful machine. There might be chips where they ought not be, but the table and the sliding surfaces look gorgeous.

      @AWDJRforYouTube 6 ปีที่แล้ว

There is a horrific video on TH-cam of a young man polishing a long shaft that snags his sleeve/ and drags him into the lathe...it states his left arm had to be amputated. I got shook when Mr Pete put that pad on at first glance, I know he knows what he is doing. So do I , but it only takes ONCE to be sorry. ROLL EM UP TO THE ELBOWS as it says in "How To Run A Lathe".

AWDJR {RETIRED} Every time I see someone running a machine with long sleeves on, jewelry, rings, or watches I cringe and hope they don’t get hurt. Where I work some guy was running a surface grinder and his wedding ring got caught on a bolt or something and it ripped his finger off and all his tendons up to his elbow and wrapped it around the spindle. Luckily I didn’t have to witness it.

My extension cord is a 12 gauge wire. The amperage draw at 2:20 volts is only about three or four. It doesn't heat up and doesn't even get warm. And it would not matter if it was coiled

Nothing to apologize for in these long restoration videos. Many of them are speeded up and edited and you miss the thought process the restorer goes through. Hobby machinists who have never had one of those machines apart will wind up doing so soon enough when they buy one. Consider the work so many K&T mill owners go through!
