    Years ago when I was young & foolish(er) I made 20 off 3' long by 1"sq. racks & matching pinions for dumpster sliding hatches.... not exactly precision work 🙄😂
    I used my Elliot shaper & hand-ground a piece of 3/4" HSS ... using an original rack as a template... (the end teeth with no wear )...
    The M.S. pinions were milled on my Van Norman mill using a homemade dividing head. The racks were marked out for each tooth ... I'm not sure if any REAL profit was made on this job but they worked fine and I enjoyed the challange.
    As a self-taught machinist from textbooks (no youtube back then 🙄) I learned "on the job" making tools & accessories for my machines. I limited my self to jobs not requiring super precision as I couldnt afford accurate machines & much in the way of metrology... a few mics & verniers ... but I "got 'er done"for a lotta farmers with broken stuff & made a living. I ended up being self-employed for 35 years & loved every minute of it. I was born with machining in my blood...& I still do it !!

    • @ThePottingShedWorkshop
      @ThePottingShedWorkshop 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can cut left to right or right to left depending on which way round you install the cutter. Obviously if you cut the other direction the cutter has to rotate the other way too. If the cutter rotates the wrong way, it won't cut and the sound of it will tell you something's wrong pretty quick.

    Something just occurred to me. Is it possible that after cutting something like this that warping/twisting/bowing could pop up? And if so is it likely to even be enough to be any problem for more precise tolerances?

      That was a big problem years ago at school. But I checked one of these little racks with my brown and sharp straight edge. I could not detect any bowing

      It happened to me when I cut a new rack for the surface grinder I'm restoring. 1 inch cold rolled, 14" long, 12DP teeth cut one side only. It bent about 50 thou. I had no choice but to remake it but using hot rolled stock.

      @@ThePottingShedWorkshop you couldn't straighten it? Just a question. The commercial rack i used in the weld shop was never straight

    Hi Mrpete, can you stack the racks in a line to make longer ones? how to do that ?

    • @daveticehurst4191
      @daveticehurst4191 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark, YES you can, often lathe carriage racks are done this way. You would have to ensure that the end of each rack is accurately machined square and the distance from the end to a tooth is 1/2 a pitch, so that when they are joined together, the pitch is correct. You would also be advised to Dowel each piece of rack down to where you intend to use it so that any force from the pinion does not try to push adjacent rack parts apart and give you binding.

      Of course it is still preferred to use a continuous one, on the lathe I have the rack has 2 pieces, the other piece is in the bed gap piece and the rest 1,5m is continuous.

    Maybe I was fooled by different camera locations, but were all the teeth cut in the same direction?

    I love cutting gears.
    It's interesting that for both DP (imperial) and metric gears there are 8 cutters to the set, that do the same number of teeth range, but the cutters are numbered in the reverse order.
    I miss not having a universal mill to be able to cut helical gears, other than plunge cutting them to fit a worm drive.
    With only a 5/8" shaft, if any of the spacers are not perfectly parallel on the ends it will bend heavier shafts when tightened up.
    Do you have a keyway in the shaft, that would further reduce its strength, even if it was only 4 mm or so.

      The daimetral pitch is almost the same as the metric module pitch. I was just figuring out the pitch of a couple metric gears that I need whenTubalcain started this series. I found the conversion in the same Brown & Sharpe catalog that Mr.Pete has on page 336. A module 1.25 = 20.32 daimetral pitch. It turns out that the depth of cut between a 1.25 or 20 DP are only a couple of thousands different. I found this interesting anyway. Yes I lead an exciting life!

      @@andyZ3500s The mathematics for metric module gears is simpler than initial DP.
      For metric module:
      PCD = module # x number of teeth,
      OD = PCD + 2×module #
      Depth of cut = 2.25 × module #
      With imperial gears DOC varies with pressure angle and reference standard.

    Do arbors ever run true? I have Cincinnati, Kearney and Trecker, Brown and Sharpe, etc and I don't think ANY of them run perfectly true.. Cheers! Mike in Louisiana (Ramsay 1)

    But I was a very bad pupil.

    So I did with the oxiocetilin torch.
    I know that's not how you spell oxiocetilin.
    For all my hard work. I got a smack on the back of my head. Mmm
    When I left school. I worked in a tool making shop. 50 years ago. But all I wanted to do was to punch my manager.

      Yes, I had a lot of kids like you at school. But some of them liked being in the shop. And they sure liked it a lot better than being in math or English, LOL. And actually, some of them were really nice kids, they just needed a little growing up
