I'm a 230lbs 6'0 and trust me, these are life saving tips for any grappler. bigger grapplers tend to overdo when it comes to pressure and strength, sometimes lacking the finesse to actually pin down opponents. I'm recently looking at more videos target for "smaller grapplers" to focus more on the technique and energy saving tips for the matches, appreciate the video!
I can totally relate as a bigger stronger guy that started out rolling with much smaller and weaker guys we tend to rely on our strength to get certain positions and escape submissions instead of smart efficient technique. Then when you go up against someone somewhat better than you, you can’t really submit them and it’s hard for them to submit you until you get exhausted. Getting tips from smaller grapplers really helped me to not rely on my strength as much and conserve energy so I can go for longer, also the strength difference is even more exaggerated when you use your body in a more efficient way bio mechanically.
Same. I'm the big guy but my mount still sucks. I'm usually too scared to use my weight and in harder rolls where I do use it, I don't have the control and awareness to do anything other than smash.
6'1" 230 too - there's always a bigger stronger dude. One day this guy walks in - white belt. Demolishes all of us. Even subs the black belts. We find out later that he was an Olympic rower - a literal 1 in million kind of athlete - 6'6" easy 250 ripped all natural and agile too. Not all humans are made the same way... that day I found out my S mount sucks and my side control escapes don't work!
Wow your teaching is very clear and in depth. I'm sure many more of us would love to see more of this kind of thing (side control, back control, turtle etc)
This right here. She has the perfect amount of technical detail but keeping the info at a fast enough pace my ADD doesn't kick in. She completely changed how I do my arm triangles.
The transition from side control to mount was a thing of beauty. I've been getting blocked so many times and watching this made me realize the major holes in my game. Thank you 🙏
Been doing bjj for years now and that was THE clearest explaination ive ever seen. Please make more of these using the same method. Also you get a like, sub and comment.
So much top notch content in bjj these days, just gotta sift through a lot of click bait stuff. Watched a Vid a couple weeks ago from a Globetrotters camp, Chris Paines how to defend everything. I've never grown my game so much from a single video before. Connected a lot of dots for me.
Outstanding teacher making an outstanding video. As a brown belt and BJJ video addict, I'll say she could be one of the best instructors from what I see. It's refreshing to see a genuinely nice, light, and unintentionally funny personality come together with clear communication and solid grasp of high level (championship level) fundamentals. Pronouncing her "th" 's like an "f' is also classic. Thank you Ffion, looking forward to more; we'll be waiting.
That last tip was exactly what I needed to hear. I'd always thought the goal of side control was pretty much just to get to mount asap but I'd never thought about actually setting up a good mount from side control. I think that alone will make a big difference to my mount game. Thanks!
Been looking for some mount tips for some time and I have to be honest this is the best video I've encountered so far. Thank you so much for the knowledge
This is one of the best mount tutorials I've ever seen, and I've watched a lot of them. There is so much fantastic detail here. Tips for controlling, making bridging difficult, knowing when to bail but not lose control....simply marvelous. That bonus tip for moving to mount from side control is pure gold, which I think will close a gaping hole in my game. Much appreciated! Thank you ma'am!
I think it's spies. Well, idk about you, bit I better start working on improving my founts & sub transitions or she might come pay me a visit. And it won't be a friendly one lol.
Smaller grappler here - great video with lots of very helpful details. The "blanketing" vs "concaving" concept was especially useful for me - I was already kind of doing this, but didn't fully get the why of it until now. Thank you! 🎉
Huge fan, pls do more instructionals - your teaching style is spot on and very relatable, even if we light years behind where you are skill wise :). Great stuff, immediately useful. Just started playing mount a lot in a room of much larger opponents, and will put this to use straight away. Esp the cross face details - solid gold.
I am learning so many tips from your videos. I am a small person, so I appreciate your knowledge. The tip on the timing of coming into mount is brilliant.
It's sometimes hard to believe huge guys when they say something will work on bigger, stronger opponents. You actually know what it's like and have had the experiences I'm encountering. I'd watch any instructional you put out! Another white belt in my class told me I would never be able to armbar him, so my request is for an armbar video. Thank you, you're great!!
This hugely improved me top mount, and gave me a far better understanding of how to keep top mount, I watched and studied this video, then went to gi the same night, and when it was time to roll live, I successfully got like 80% of this down on a much larger stronger opponent. Blessed thank you
Those are some really great, detailed instructions. Love the attention to the small technical details that always end up making all the difference. Well done!
I got into Jiu Jitsu about 1.5 years ago and I brought my daughter with me almost from the start. I'm super happy that you started your own channel! I saw a few of your tutorials on Jiu Jitsu X, and I told my daughter about them then. It's great to have tips and pointers out there for smaller grapplers. (At 6'2" and 240 lbs it can be hard for me to explain things to her if she can't make them work in her own weight class.)
1. Cross face (arm pit + turn face w shoulder while blanketing) 2. Collect near side arm (elevated or head & arm or use knee) 3. Replace head w arm & base w near side arm 4. If leg scoops, collar tie and move into mounted triangle 5. Control shoulders and arms to get to high mount 6. If opponents hips are aligned with yours, bridge will be very effective. Move your hips slightly higher (bring feet tight and knees wide to counter bridge. If arms are tight, use knees to separate elbows). 7. Bail mount position instead of being swept (blanketing) 8. Go to mount after collecting one arm/underhook (ninja mount)
This was really fantastic and clear instruction, many thanks to you. I am an older (46-year old) blue belt and have historically always struggled in top mount ie easily bucked off etc. Will try to apply these concepts now. Thanks again.
Just watched your documentary on Alec Baulding's channel, and the algorithm knew exactly what to do. This is enormously helpful and explained perfectly, and we get the bonus of it being so aesthetically pleasing with your demonstration!
Super appreciate you sharing these! As a fellow smaller grappler I find so many of the tips on here not very useful to completely irrelevant. Your explanations are very thorough yet easy to grasp. Thank you!!! 🙏🏼 ❤
This was soooooo helpful! Please continue making them! I tried some of your tips out such as that cross face and the knees tight vs wide. Immediately had better results getting the arm triangle.
This just popped up on my TH-cam feed. I find it interesting to see how your career progresses. I can already see you are getting more comfortable in front of the camera, and really good pointers. There’s a lot BJJ content, but what makes a move work and not work is very nuanced and down to the fine details. I will be following to see how your channel develops.
I really enjoyed this video and specifically your way of interacting with Gabriel is really wholesome! The details were great, but for a nearly 12 minute video, I would love to you either use chapters or just do a 20 second recap at the end of the video, where you just name all the thing you showed. This would really help me using this video as learning material for practise tomorrow. Looking forward to your next video!
I am strong and heavy and still I struggle to bring my partner‘s arms up in Mount. So the detail of when to mount and to set up the arm isolation from side control before mounting was very helpful. Thanks, great video!
I’m light and that helps explain why my mounts were never very effective when I was training before. I’m just starting again this week. Looking forward to applying this
I was literally having those “I’d rather stick with side control” thoughts in my head this week. I seem to get into short-lived mount positions a fair amount of the time, but I’m typically thrown off. I’m looking forward to trying these tips.
Always struggled to control bigger opponents in mount. I'm getting better and this video has very good tips to incorporate. Current struggle that I face is how to go from controlled mount to submissions. I always feel I relinquish a bit of control and that I lose mount,
This was incredibly helpful, thank you! I always have trouble with mount, but this definitely makes me feel more comfortable with maintaining my position.
Thank you, Ffion! You are truly remarkable. Such an awesome instructional. One of my sons just won the 2024 Kids Pan American Championship for his age/weight bracket down in Orlando at IBJJF. We train 6 days per week and your videos are lovely addition to our study of the BJJ artform.
Wow how can I actually throw my money at you? This channel is gonna have 1-million subs and be the top instructional channel on YT in the next 2 years easy mark my words.
Great tips! I'm a middle-weight blue belt guy and I've noticed smaller grapplers are definitely more technical than bigger ones so I love learning technique from a smaller fighter's perspective then supplementing it with my strength. I'm focusing heavily on DLR lately so would love to see technique breakdowns there as well if possible. I get it might not be your game but if there's anything you'd recommend I'm all ears you're a beast.
I’ve been struggling with mount recently. This was very helpful and gave great reminders in solidifying the position! Super excited to use this in a tournament coming up! Thank you!
This was so well explained and informative! I also like that you went straight to the point without a superlong intro. I feel like a lot of bjj content creators seem to have such big ego and that becomes the whole point of the video (even when they talk about humbleness). Thank you so much ❤
Great tips Near the end when he was bridging and turning around it looked like you could set up back control or even an armbar if you adjusted grip and where your body is
As a smaller white belt, my mount def sucks Same problem with getting bridged/rolled over into closed guard I've been letting guys try to bridge and just loosening up and slipping to the back. But with these techs maybe I'll hold mount better I like your teaching style!
last tip was super helpful, I always jump to mount asap but despise ratcheting the arms up, it takes so much energy. Will try to collect the arms before now, thanks
That was boss that! Loved the detail about the blanket approach - I'm always getting rolled in mount so this is perfect for use against the heavier grapplers.
great break down! I also prefer other positions to mount at times and I'll try some of this to help improve my outcomes. Thanks for spelling it all out!
I like this series of details, I don't know why, but you make it sound so clear and precise yet in a very relaxed fashion, and I am a fan of your games, you and Gabriel, are very special, very inspiring athletes, and personalities 😊😊😊

I love how you teach and am looking forward to more content on the techniques, but I’d also appreciate if you could speak about injury prevention, if you have any advices to share :) I’ve been training for only 10 months and I managed to break my toe and crack my rib (both times kinda silly accident, my rolling partners were great).
Thank you for the video on mount position. I feel more confident after understanding how to position your opponent to keep them from bridging me off so easily. 👍
Please continue making videos. As a smaller male grappler, many of your short instructionals have been some of the best I've watched.
